I once heard that, although Chevrolet did not keep detailed statistics,  it was estimated that about 10% of the '69 Z/28s were delivered with the RS option. Has anyone else heard this? That would make the total about 2,000.

General Discussion / Re: This is a good looking car!
« on: January 01, 2015, 03:52:52 PM »
Just getting to the point of installing the lower A-ARMS and saw this thread. My Legends car has the lower A-ARM bolts, facing toward the rear of the car (head of bolt to front of frame), but the AIM clearly shows the bolts facing forward. Can someone confirm that the AIM is wrong?

Also, AMK indicates that the bolts are parkerized and nuts are natural, but my legends car is bolts and nuts natural. Which is correct?

Thanks for the great info here. It is very consistent with other authoritative sources on the topic. I have completed the disassembly process on my '69 and am gearing up to clean and parkerize all the nuts and bolts. The one part of the process that I am still struggling with is protection of the parkerized parts. i've read about WD-40, PreLube 6, Boeshield and Rust Prevention Magic. Some recommend re-coating once or twice per year. I can't imagine doing this for all the nuts and bolts and washers on the car. Is that what others do?

Thanks,

John

PS: I do want the factory look, so spraying with clear coat is not an option.

Excellent advice all around! I am in tear down phase of my '69 now. Couple of other ideas:

1. I make notes of particularly difficult disassemblies.
2. I will write the AIM section, page, and part number on the ziplock bag.
3. I have a number of storage bins. I keep a list of what is in each bin.
4. Another catalog worth having is AMK fasteners. They do a nice job of cross referencing with the GM part numbers from the AIM.
5. I tend to blast and repaint parts during disassembly.

Enjoy! this is amazingly relaxing and fun work.

Dean,

I recommend repainting original color. Also, do you know about the MD Camaro Club? Based in Clarksville, MD. Great club.

Everyone,

Thanks for the advice. Mine is a '69. Didn't realize you could rebuild the hinges. Will take a closer look this weekend when I am back at the shop.

Chick, nice to hear from you! Was driving through your neck of the woods last week. Almost called to see if you were around.

Like many have reported on this site, I continue to be disappointed with many reproduction parts. Why can't these suppliers get this stuff right?

Anyway, can anyone recommend a good source for reproduction door hinges? Mine are pretty worn.

Thanks in advance,

John

My '69 Z was purchased by  a Vietnam vet from Kardon Chevrolet in Mount Holly, NJ in Sept, '69. Still hoping to track down the original owner. Anyone know how to track down veterans?

Restoration / Re: Window regulators - clean up or replace?
« on: September 09, 2013, 02:29:49 AM »
Randfr,

Mine are '69 Camaros, so I don't have the vent windows. For me, I replaced the rollers. The reproduction ones are fine. I had to replace the quarter window regulators because the teeth were shot. The repos also work fine. I kept the tracks, just wiped them off. I used white litho and used it liberally.

As to how you install the rollers, there is a tool (Rick's part number HW-26) that is a must.

It's been a while since anyone posted about the best source for pre-assembled interior door panels. I see that Lgendary Auto Interiors sells them. So does Rick's. Anyone have a recommendation for the best reproduction?

Thanks!

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement "seal" for a 1969 Camaro? It can be found in the AIM on UPC 11/13, Sheet B1, Part #6. The GM part number is 3949606. It clips on to the firewall below the steering wheel. Here is a picture of the old part:

We were planning to meet at this year's Camaro Nationals but his schedule caused a last minute change of plans so I told him I would come to him...

John,

Like the others, I love reading stories like this. Thanks very much for sharing. If there is any chance you can meet next year at Nationals, let me know. I suspect we could do something special...

Best,

John
