Originality / 396 engine dipstick tip color
« on: January 21, 2007, 01:08:58 PM »
Hi, have read elsewhere in various places that the big blocks came with a yellow tipped dipstick.
Mine is a flattened handle with green tip - no dimple.
The blade markings are Add  Full  Engine oil  E [the E is at right angles, more heavily stamped and a different font.
Car is 68 L34
Any clarification appreciated.

Decoding/Numbers / 1968 L34 exhaust manifold date codes
« on: January 20, 2007, 01:02:21 PM »
Hi all, does the L1 7 code on this exhaust manifold decode to December 1st 1967?
Would that be a valid date code for a body build of 12C and an engine date code of 1204 [4th Dec]
Does the '178' number mean anything?
Casting - pn is 3916178
Cheers

Decoding/Numbers / 68 wheel rim date codes
« on: January 10, 2007, 02:47:51 PM »
Hi, just wanted to confirm the rim codes I have. On one side of the valve stem they are stamped K1 with a 7 under the K1, then 11. The other side of the stem is stamped 30 XG.
Would this be November 30 67? This would match well with my car's build code 12C?
The 'XG' I know about, but whats the 'K1' stamping?

Originality / Upper control arm
« on: August 31, 2006, 09:39:55 AM »
Just wondering about the significance of the two holes in the side of the arm. My original 68 arms don't have them.
The arm is supposedly NOS 69 camaro.

Also, the shape of the support bar is different, the loose one in the pic is of my 68. The one attached to the arm has a number cast into it, which as best as I can make out reads 381904.
Is that a 69 casting number?
Is the loose one the correct shape for 68?

Originality / Correct tacho [tick toc tac] redline for 68 396 L34
« on: July 22, 2006, 11:15:47 AM »
After looking through the tacho's on offer from Classic, I noticed that the one listed for 68 396 325 - 350HP is redlined at 5000 rpm.
Mine is redlined at 5500 rpm and was puzzled by the discrepancy, as I was fairly sure mine was the original from factory.
I have just spotted this seemingly fairly original 68 bb camaro on ebay in which the seller notes that the tacho is redlined at 5500.

Is 5500 rpm correct for 68 L34? Where there any variations to this?

Some other points of interest are the straight wrap-around bumble bee stripes only on the nose - no stripes down the sides, which is how mine is.
I'm sure though that all 68 bb's came with the striped sides? Is that correct? The seller does say that the car has been resprayed but kept as original as possible.

The other point is the wheel caps, could you get L34 with those type of caps?

General Discussion / Is this a Pontiac dash pad?

Can someone confirm for me that this is a 68 Pontiac pad with the recess in the pad for what must have been a taller instrument cluster?

Originality / Optic fiber vigilite lens colours
« on: May 27, 2006, 04:45:02 PM »
What colour are the optic fiber lens's for the fender mounted assemblies? Mine are a bit faded looking, seems to be clear on one side and the middle, green on the other side?
I've noted that Chevelle seems to be red, clear and green with 3 fibers in each lens assembly?

Originality / 68 dash pad
« on: May 27, 2006, 04:36:46 PM »
Is the 68 dash pad with the chrome trim the same as a dash pad without the trim? ie, can the trim be fitted to a dash pad that was originaly without the trim?

Originality / 68 Camaro big block oil line fittings
« on: May 27, 2006, 04:28:52 PM »
The AIM for 68 Camaro BB is a little confusing on U17 A3. It shows two different oil line arrangements, presumably the one shown connecting near the distributor is for L78?
For the line connecting near the filter, there's a bracket [item 8] holding the oil line, but is noted as belonging to L35, with no mention of L34. In fact, L34 is not mentioned anywhere in the items list??

Also, the detail for the elbow at the oil filter shows what appears to be a seperate bush, elbow and adapter [items 6, 5, 4 resp.], which is what's on my motor [L34] at the moment, as against the single piece elbow with adapter for 69 Camaro. Is this correct, 68's were a 3 piece arrangment and 69's were 2 piece?

And what the heck is item 11??? - gauge asm. ??? Is that supposed to be a temp sender? Drawn in an odd place??

Originality / LSD diff tag

Did the 12 bolt posi [and others] have a stamped metal tag under a cover bolt as well as the plastic tag around the filler plug?

Originality / 68 Camaro deluxe steering horn shroud
« on: May 16, 2006, 02:36:01 AM »
Were the side skirts of the 68 deluxe steering shroud painted or chrome?
Did any 68's come with wood accents applied to the horn button tops and the middle of the vertical arm?
