Also, on the SS hood, the springs are different from the standard hood.  Make sure you get the right ones.

The correct carb would be a Rochester 4mv.  Someone else in this forum will be able to get you the part # I'm sure.

As far as the original air cleaner, good luck!  I think it's pretty unique and hard to find.  To my knowledge no one reproduces it.  It's a black base with the snorkel facing the driver's side.  The top is chrome with the red 350 sticker.  (the stickers are readily available from classic industries and others.)

Classic Industries has the repro hood which is correct for the SS ornaments.  $219.

Originality / Re: Correct seat belt for 68 custom interior
« on: May 08, 2006, 06:16:12 PM »
I got some (standard buckles) from them a few months ago and installed them.  They are repros but I would say they are very close to the originals.   The blue GM mark of excellence part is a peel-and-stick and looks real similar to the originals but not exact. Of course they won't have the little white date tag on the web part of the belt.  I'm happy with mine.  I have the black deluxe interior.

What you have pictured is the standard seat belt buckle for '68.  Both the base interior and "Deluxe Interior" came with these buckles.  The deluxe seatbelts were a separate option available with any interior.  So, your seatbelts are "correct", but you could upgrade them if you wanted to.  The custom deluxe buckles were bright silver (not sure if chrome or brushed/polished) and not black like yours.   Hope this helps!

Originality / Re: 68 396 hood ornaments and side marker bezel

I have original - unrestored hood ornaments on my '68.   Yes, there is satin black in the channel but not in between the stacks.  In other words it makes a rectangle around the 4 stacks.  I'll try to get a picture of them.  I also have the original side marker bezels and yes, there is a very tin groove that is black.

I tried them too.  No Luck.  In the mean time, I found another set of hex keys for my '68.  I  got them in the mid 80's from NPD I think.  They say GM on BOTH sides, but I don't know if they are repros or not.

The original 67 - 68 B & S hex keys are listed on page 149 of the current Classic Industries catalog, which is an enormous pdf file, now 138MB in size @ 932 pages!!

So, the early style ones from Classic would say GM on one side (as pictured on pg. 149) and then Briggs and Stratton on the other?  Is that correct?  But I'm still unclear if these are ORIGINAL or REPRO?   If they are REPRO is this the best we can do?  Or does someone know if ORIGINAL ones are available somewhere?   Thanks.

I'm confused.  Did the '68 hex keys originally say "GM" or "Briggs and Stratton"?

It doesn't say in the catalog.  You might want to call them and ask.  If they are repros, I can tell you that they look great!

I'm pretty sure the hex head keys would be correct for all 68's even late ones.   Can anyone confirm this?  I bought a couple sets from Classic Industries last fall.  They had "Briggs and Stratton" on them.  Make sure you order the ones that are listed as "early style" , part # k111 and k112.  The ones shown in the picture in their catalog are for a 67 and say "GM".  Sorry, can't help you with the production date question.

I have a '68 SS/RS 350 with the SS Hubcaps.  Does anyone know if these were standard on SS models or optional?  If optional, does anyone know what th RPO would be?  Thanks.

Unfortunately there is no way to verify if your car is an SS with just the cowl tag info.
