I had the same problem after doing some detailing on the interior of the car.  Indications were exactly the same, moving the headlamp switch past the detente caused the fuel gauge to go to empty and both signal indicators came on.  In addition, when I turned the turn signal on, it acted more like a hazard switch than a turn signal.  The left and right illuminated alternately.  I cleaned all the grounds in the engine bay and made sure I had the tooth washers on both headlight grounds since I had previously had a nose clip restoration.  Still had the same indications, only each time I tested the circuit, I received different lighting variations.  I went through all of the forum posts on this and knew that I only had a couple more places to check before breaking down and replacing the switch or the entire turn signal wiring harness.  I noticed that the center screw that secures the instrument cluster was protruding slightly further than the other two.  With the headlamps on and the directional signals activated, I tightened the center screw securely and immediately started noticing the proper operation of the turn signals and the fuel gauge went back to a little less than full which is where it should have been.  Since I had cleaned all the grounds and secured with new tooth washers, all of my lights were significantly brighter.  Thanks to the forum for all the info on this.

I LOVE working under the dash of these things!  I now have a newfound admiration for David Copperfield.  Received my new lens and got the bezel secured to the rest of the control.  Went to install it only to have the control separate from the bezel once everthing was in place.  Took it back out and went with Sauron's suggestion.  I put in some self tapping screws in the holes adjacent to the tabs.  This made for a much more secure installation.  Don't know why they didn't go this route in the first place as it's much simpler.  Finally got everthing back together and it looks great.  Cleaned up my original knobs with some cleaner and reinstalled those also.  Thanks everyone for their help on this.

LOL.  Not sure if they're all the same or not.  Rick's (argh!) lists them for $12.  I'll reuse mine just the same.

Ouch!  That seems pretty drastic.  Besides, I can't find a source for the replacement knobs.  Mine are still good.  Just need a good cleaning.

Pull twist, pull twist, pull twist.  Got 'em.  Once I got the lens out, I found it needed to be replaced anyhow.  There was a hairline crack that wasn't visible at eye level but ran right under the "OFF" in one slot.  The bezel (geeze) looked like it came out of a fast food joint that had never passed a health inspection!  Guess I know what I'll be doing the rest of this 4th of July!  But what better way to spend it working on a true classic.  Thanks for the info guys!!!

Are the knobs just simply supposed to pull off?  Tried that and even tried a little persuasion but seems like there is more to it than meets the eye.  Maybe just terrifficly junked up?

OK.  This one has me stumped.  My heater control lens on my 67 (without A/C) is filthy after 43 years of dust and smoke.  I can't find any decent pictures in the AIM or service manual on how to remove this.  I'm sure it's not a simple procedure but there has to be a way to do it since replacements are available from several sources.  As far as I can tell, the control levers have to come out in order to replace the lens.  Or do the chrome buttons come off to facilitate the lens removal?  Am I asking for a job that's more than it's worth?  I'm so confused!

What types of problems were you having that made you replace the distributor?  Is the hesitation severe?  What does it do at idle speeds?

Now, I don't suggest washing your Camaro every week but it does give some good detailing pointers.  I'm prepping mine for a show this weekend and decided to make a MAJOR investment in some Mother's products.  Some of it is pricy but there again, you get what you pay for.  I wasn't disappointed in any of the items that I bought as they work fantastic.  Many of the items that are available on the market, while making your car look great, actually damage your vinyl, rubber, and plastic.  You're much better off buying products that are specifically made for each application rather than using a protectant or shine that may work ok for your everyday driver.  These guys know what they're doing and have years of experience in refining their products.  If you plan on keeping your Camaro looking sharp for the next 40+ years, you may want to check out their line.

Interestingly enough, I was able to procure one from RockAuto in Illinois.  Their part number was 779-601 and was listed to fit a 68 Chevy Nomad 230 L6 with automatic transmission.  Turns out to be a GP Sorenson choke thermostat which they appear not to manufacture any longer.  If anyone is interested, their wholesaler is closing out the inventory and has only 1 left.  It installs perfectly and seems to function properly as well.

You got me wondering about the PF29 versus the PF25.  Since my AIM is missing the part numbers for the filter, I looked in some of the literature that I received from the GM Customer Assistance Center.  Although the part numbers are not listed it states that the L6 engine had a "full flow, throw away canister" versus the V8 which had a "full flow, replaceable element".  The originals of those were white with blue lettering.  The GM part number for those was 19187300.  They were white with the red AC logo.
