Restoration / Re: Gutting Original Y55

I am getting ready to do something similar with my R89S battery.

Although pricey, I plan to use a Braille battery.  Not fumes at all.  More CCA available.

Started a thread here:  https://www.yenko.net/forum/showthread.php?t=151420

Got the acid drained and completely neutralized last night.  My garage is such a huge mess right now, so I need to clean it up a bit, but will document this procedure.

The picture is not cooperating! Wants to rotate for some reason...

Nice.  Studebakers rock.   My 53 Commander has a lock up torque converer.  What year did GM finally get around to that?  83?  84?

General Discussion / Re: 1969 Z28 power brakes

Agree;  it was strictly a matter of preference.

Just because a car has disc brakes, it does not really NEED power assist.  Case in point:  my 1970 LT-1 Corvette has four wheel manual brakes.  Came that way from the factory.  No PB and no power steering.

It appears the last two digits of the VIN, have been stamped over the P9 part of assembly stamp.

I get it now.

If it is a May 8 trans (which is really possible... lots of May parts on Aug cars) shouldn't it be P9E08A  ???

EO8A   ??

I know transmissions are stamped for model year.  But, how would they have known in May of 1969 that this was going into an August 69 car that would meet the 1970 model year standards?

I know gas tanks were dated for the 1970 model year starting in August 1969.   Have not seen any transmissions stamped this way.

General Discussion / Re: partial vin stampings

Thanks William:

"Most of the time, the same VIN gang-stamp was used for both the engine and transmission VIN stamps, but some 1969 vehicles have the engine and tranmission VIN stamps applied with different gang-stamps. It is unknown why this occurred."

Seems like an incredible waste of time to load up TWO gang stamps for one engine/trans set up; especially considering that they had to change out a number or two for the very next engine/trans combo.

General Discussion / partial vin stampings
« on: July 19, 2019, 02:40:54 AM »
I know Ihave read this somewhere.  Just wanting to clarify the procedure.

Obviously, the engine assembly code was stamped at Flint or Tonowanda.

The partial vin was stamped at LA or Norwood AFTER the engine and trans were assigned to a particular car.

Were the two units (engine and trans) then stamped twice with the same gang stamper set up?

If so, wouldn't the fonts on the partials always be exactly the same?  I realize there was some play in the gang stamper (I have seen more than one with one digit a little high or low) but at least the fonts of the "N" would always be the same.  Same for the "9" for 1969 model years, and so on all the way through the partial.

Am I off base?

Had no idea.  I do not believe my car had the sticker.   My brother got it in 75, and I traded him for it in 76.  There was no evidence of any gum adhesive residue.

No, I can't.

Hey Lynn, that sticker started in September 1 of 69, not august. You can see 08E cars that had the sticker, (to be delivered in September) but none prior.
That's a conflicted statement. 08E would be August built, not September.

Look at page 200 of Jerry's 1969 book.  John Berry's old car, vin 671208 (mine is 671122).  There is a pic of the sticker, and a pic of his vin.  John's car got the sticker, and it is an 08A car.  My car, just 86 cars earlier, did not get the sticker.  I have no other pics, but have talked to at least two others with 08A cars who told me their cars got the vin sticker.   The two ribs on the door started showing up in June, I believe.  I have never heard of a car prior to 08A getting the sticker.

Don't know why, but about 20 years ago, I was really interested to find more info on when those started.   Seems trivial now.  I even tracked down John Berry back then, and discussed this with him.   I believe he was in Florida at the time.

The argument over whether a late 69 Camaro (and Corvette for that matter... as the 69 Corvette extended production even further than the Camaro) is mainly a question of semantics.

All the VIN's indicate 1969 model year.   They DID have to comply with 1970 Federal standards which is why only the Camaros built after Aug. 1 recieved the blue mylar vin decal in the door, as well as the stamped vin on top of the dash.  Pre August cars do not have the decal in the door.

Someone enlighten me if I am wrong, but I believe that mylar decal was the ONLY Federal standard that applied to 70 models that did not apply to 69 models.

Did one decal on the door make it a 70 model?   Does it really matter?

General Discussion / Re: 68 Z28 on BaT

Not sure if any Z/28's got them, but there are a couple of very late 68 Camaros with 350 engines that got 1969 casting (186) heads.
The extra holes would not interfere with anything on the 68.

Ad says Nov. 69.  P9K is July, 69.

Agree with Kurt (and only saying because you asked for opinions).

If it were the ORIGINAL paint there might be a good argument for keeping it as is.   Even then, given the amount of surfacr rust, a good paint job might be in order.   Being that it is a repaint, the decision toward a good paint job is even easier.  It will preserve it much better.  JMHO, but it is moving fast beyond "patina".
