Restoration / Restoring / polishing trim rings
« on: July 10, 2012, 02:59:43 AM »
I have six original trim rings for my 69 Z/28.  Very slight dings and scratches.  Couple of questions:

Were these "flash chromed" originally?

If not flash chromed, where can I send them to get the small dings out and for polishing?

My late 08A car only had two trim rings left when I got it in 1976.  They both have the outer four clips.

Are you sure you don't have 220 to your house?  That is pretty unusual.  No 220 to the utility room for a dryer?  I always use a gas dryer, and have pirated the 220 dryer circuit at two different homes.  You might have an electrician look at your service panel to see if you have 220 to the house.  I would be surprised if you don't unless the house is more than 60 years old.

Thanks John.  Would you be comfortable running that spring with the Comp cams replacement cam that Jerry recommends for 302's?
Very close specs to the old 30 30 cam.

Car would not likely see over 6500 rpm and will have  a rev limiter set at 7000, just to be safe.

It is doubtful that a 110 compressor will keep up with a blast cabinet.  The harbor freight numbers are pretty optimistic in my opinion.

Paint guns are pretty much a matter of personal opinion, but for most hobbyists, mega buck guns are not necessary.  I am sure there are many good medium priced guns.  I have a pair of HVLP Sharpe guns I bought a few years back, one for primer and one for finish paint.  I don't think you can get anything but HVLP guns any more.  If you are doing very small parts, some of the older guns you can get used can be very good.  I have an old Binks #7 gun and an early DeVilbiss gun that I will never get rid of, especially the DeVilbiss.  Laquer (yes, I know, you can't buy it anymore but I have a bunch stock piled) goes on so smooth, without any orange peel ever.

I just sold a house, and unfortunately, my built in compressor is going with it.  It is a 220 DeVilbiss (sp?) oil free, 6 hp rated at 12 cfm at 90 psi, and it won't keep up with either my pressure blaser or a bucket style siphon blaster.  And forget about keeping up with a cheap da sander.  I plan to replace it with one rated for 18 cfm at 100 psi, just to be safe.

Having said all of that about compressors, if you don't mind waiting for the compressor to catch up, you can use just about anything.

Good luck.

Any chance you will reproduce the correct one for the later cars.  I have an 8A Z.

Originality / Re: 1111480 Distributor Stamp Verification
« on: July 05, 2012, 12:30:49 AM »
great pictures guys, another difference is how oval the zero is vs. the other 480 the zero is more round in the stamp. I think we have our answer, i wonder if the King over paid for it or if made it?

I don't believe Chuck restamps anything.  However, he had restamped it, he would be selling as a restamp.

I am still not convinced it is a restamp.  One would have to find another 9 E 12 distributor to compare, preferably a couple.

Still a litlle confused.  Car Craft Dec. 69 article on how to Z/28 your 283 Chevy states the correct part number for the 302 valve springs was 3735381, also still available.   I know that magazine guys got a lot of facts incorrect.  Which spring is correct?   Anyone know the difference between the two?

Resurrecting an old thread, but.... the 3911068 spring is still available.  Did the assy line springs on the 69 Z/28 have a white stripe painted down one side?

Fuzzy memories.....

Restoration / Installing inner window fuzzies.
« on: February 09, 2012, 07:38:21 PM »
I bought a very nice pair of original front door panels.  One has had the window fuzzy replaced.  They used 1/8 inch pop rivets instead of the original staples.

Other one I decided to replace with a perfect used one I had saved from an old door panel.

Removed the staples, drilled a couple holes in the new door panel to accept the staples.  But.... I can't get the staples bent down hard enough to hold the inner fuzzy in place.  Tried needle nose pliers, screwdrivers, c-clamps and vice grip c-clamps.  Can't get a good enough bite.

I don't have a giant metal piercing stapler.

What do you guys do?  Use pop rivets as was done on the other side?

The repair doesn't look too bad, but if one looks very closely, you can see the rivets.

Thanks for any help.
Lynn

General Discussion / Re: 1969 Camaro passenger door mirror location

I have an NOS 3914754 that William mentions.  Most GM dealer installed parts come with some kind of instructions (rear speaker kit, rear defrost kit, etc. - and yes, I am aware those may have also been assy line installed, but they were also available OTC) but this one did not.  Not sure if all of them came sans instructions, but IIRC (big if) this box had never been opened when I got it.
