Originality / Re: Source for 'EY' Coil Springs for '69 Z28/RS??
« on: September 20, 2012, 04:01:24 AM »
I feel for you.  I don't think there is any source that custom matches springs for 69 Camaros.

I don't believe there is any way you can repair a broken spring.  It would not have the same spring rate.

I KNOW others will disagree, but because there were so many springs installed on our cars depending on options, I believe the best approach is to carefully measure the diameter of the spring wire, then start looking for someone who is selling a pair of springs taken out of a 69 Z/28, and purchase them if they are a dead on match.  Same wire daimeter, same number of coils.  I have two pair of springs that i bought from two different sources, both swearing that they personally removed them from a 69 Z.  They are different.  Your ey springs indicate the car came with options that increased the front weight by 69 to 148 pounds.  The problem with the tags, is most of them are gone.    Post an exact diameter of the spring wire, and tell us how many coils.  There are still some good parts cars out there.

Good luck.

Lynn

So, is DQE 8568 lacquer or enamel?

Tried to find the DQE paint under "topcoats" on the ppg website.  Can't find anything.  Is it discontinued?

Probably a stupid question, but would the same paint be suitable for the ralley wheels on a 69?

Also, when painting the grill (both the surround in body color and the egg crate in silver) any reason to add a flex agent or other additive because it is going on plastic?

Thanks.

I realize it is an old thread, but was the first one that popped up in my search.

Thanks for the reply Steve.  Again, I am not saying your car did not come with the gripper style.  Just no way to know for certain.
Any original owner vehicles out there?

JohnZ.   I know your car was a one owner when you got it.  Your 02D Z, does it have gripper style trim rings, or the four clip version.

I think I read about it on team camaro.
Does anyone know if you can tell the repro from originals??

Bill.  Sorry, it appears we unintentionally hijacked your thread.

I have no experience with the repro trim rings.   However, I have yet the see the repro of anything that someone couldn't distinguish from the original.   Some are closer than others.  I have seen none that are exactl.

Steve:

"The only other scenario as to why the rings are "grippers" on my car would have had to have been a recall..."

Like you, not looking for an argument.  Just trying to find out the truth.  But, there are other possible explanations.  Lots can happen in 2 to 4 years and 40k miles.  They could have been changed.  I saw more than one frustrated mechanic virtually destroy the four clip rings trying to beat them on with a giant mallet when there was a wheel weight in the way.  If one or more were damaged during an early service at the dealer, the original owner may have demanded a new matched set.  Not saying that is what happened, just saying it is possible.

Another possiblity?  Stealing hubcaps was pretty common among the hoodlums of the day.  Most of the Z/28's were kids cars, and were parked out doors over night.  Only mom and dad got to park inside (or, as in our house, only mom - we had a one car garage).  You cannot say that it is impossible that they were stolen early in the car's life.  You said yourself that you "carefully removed when it was parked on the street".  Perhaps the first owner wasn't as careful.

Third possibility?  GM used a lot of different suppliers.  Perhaps there were some cars that didin't get the 4 clip rings.  In fact, it seems like I have read of a car that got some of each type.   I know my 08A of 69 car probably came with the 4 clip rings.   Only two were still on it when my brother purchased it in 1975.  I bought it from him the next year.

I have never heard of such a "recall" until just recently.   Because it would be a safety issue, I have a hard time believing that GM would issue a voluntary recall that only was effective if the customer complained about it.  When I worked at the Buick dealership, we had a couple of those, but they dealt with A/C problems or such.  Never a safety issue.

What is the tag date on your car?  Some folks claim that some of the later cars got grippers instead of four clip.

Yes, the trim plate is chrome.  I also assume chrome screw, but... just wantiing to be sure.

So, chrome it is.

Was also pretty sure it was a #8 screw, but don't know which head:

Pan head?
Oval head?
Flat head?

I have never seen one that actually came off while driving.
Yes, they are a bear to get off sometimes.
My only real beef with them when I was a mechanic, was that the clips sometimes were right where you wanted to put a wheel weight.  You would have to rebalance the wheel using two smaller weights spaced away from the clip location.

I have a December 68 DZ block.  The vin derivitive stamp is so faint, I cannot get any character to show in any photo, even after enhancing the photos.  With a jeweler's lupe, I can make out the "N" and a possible trace of either a "7" or a "1".  The "N" is the only reason I know the attempt to stamp was even made.  The guy I bought the block from swore there was no vin derivitive stamp at all.  Turned out there was, but ever so slight.

You might try looking with high magnification.  There is a chance you will see at least some evidence of stamping, just like I did.

My LOS 68D has all 3.

05D 68 Z  I mustn't have had my glasses on for that one!

Show-off.

On a more serious note, I would really really like to buy one fo the original clips if someone can part with one.
