I know Ihave read this somewhere.  Just wanting to clarify the procedure.

Obviously, the engine assembly code was stamped at Flint or Tonowanda.

The partial vin was stamped at LA or Norwood AFTER the engine and trans were assigned to a particular car.

Were the two units (engine and trans) then stamped twice with the same gang stamper set up?

If so, wouldn't the fonts on the partials always be exactly the same?  I realize there was some play in the gang stamper (I have seen more than one with one digit a little high or low) but at least the fonts of the "N" would always be the same.  Same for the "9" for 1969 model years, and so on all the way through the partial.

Am I off base?

I know this has been asked before, but is the grill color argent silver the same as Cortez Silver?

I am not interested in the wheels.  I know they were enamel, and although called the same color, never seem to be a dead on match to the lacquer on the grill.

I painted my car a few years ago, and everything came out well EXCEPT the grill.   it is too dark.   I bought a quart of what was supposed to be PPG acrylic lacquer that I was assured was the same color as argent silver for 69 Camaro grill.    First, I have a really hard time believing it is PPG.   I have used PPG many times and always got good coverage.   This stuff took 6 coats or more to cover.   It was way too translucent.   Secondly, as noted above, it is way too dark.

I know PPG still makes lacquer.   I cannot buy it in OK (distributor's choice.... as no law precludes it), but it is available on line.   The quart I got a few years ago, was in a relabeled can, not a PPG can.  Says code 8568.

So, anyone know if they are the same?   If not, anyone have the PPG number for Argent Silver?

Did the late 69 manual trans cars use the white plastic switch used on the 70 models?

I know the early cars had the round metal switch.

Hose bracket on top of alternator bracket?
I believe painted  black.

Hose bracket on the pass fenderwell?

Originality / 1969, which pinion snubber

Posted this over at, then got to thinking this forum might be more appropriate.

For sure there were two different ones, & I just want to see if there was a reason, or if it was totally random. Not sure why there would be two different ones.

Type one is the push-in. It looks similar to the rubber snubbers mounted to the frame rails, but a little smaller to push in the slot on the floor over the pinion.

Second one is a bolt-on.  Round snubber mounted to a plate that bolts on to the floor with two fasteners.

So, which do you have on your 69? Also, what axle, what engine/trans, and what ratio in the rear, and which plant?

I'll start:

Round bolt in snubber
12 bolt
unsure of original axle ratio

Originality / Door panel screws, sill plate screws

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't HBC have this wrong on the screws.

What he shows for the door panels are actually correct for the sill plates, right?

Not sure where these would go, but shouldn't the sill panel screws have the small conical washers as the ones above?

I believe the door panel screws had the big chrome washer so they wouldn't pull through easily.   Am I way off on this?

Restoration / spacing blocks in lower windshield molding.

I did searches on three sites, and can't find this addressed anywhere.

I have four black plastic spacer blocks that came out of my lower windshield molding.  8 lower clips but only four blocks, so I know there isn't one between each pair of clips (that would require 7).

I believe their purpose is to:
1.  Prevent installing the molding too high to insure the clips aren't digging into the glass, possibly starting a crack,
2. Spacing the molding slightly away from the cowl vent panel so the molding doesn't scratch.

I am therefore assuming (dangerous) that they just get spaced evenly across the molding.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Any help appreciated.

Restoration / 69 intermediate wire harness

Do you have a complete intermediat harness for a 69 Camaro?  It plugs in by the fuse block, has one single white wire (goes to the passenger door dome light switch) and the rest goes in a sheath back to the the rear light harness.  It will also have a two prong plug about 1/2 the way back with one orange and one white wire for the dome light circuit.

I don't need one that needs work.   I already have one with one burnt wire that I can repair, but was hoping to find a complete one that isn't hacked up.

Can buy a repop one, but would rather have GM.

General Discussion / Grommet for tach wire.

Anyone know where to source the grommet for the tach wire on a 69 Camaro?

Picture on paga A1 of U16 in the AIM.  Says grommet is part of the wire assy.  But the wire assy I bought doesn't have the grommet.

Big surprise, the aftermarket let me down.

The aim also says the hole should be 17/32, but mine is 31/64.

If it were 17/32 I think a distributor wire grommet would work.

Posting on multiple sites hoping for a good answer.
Both doors stick out just a little too much at the bottom rear. Right side is worse than left.
Front of door sits even with the rocker
Both are the original factory doors.
Car has never been hit, and no dents were taken out of the doors other than tiny door dings. All original sheet metal except for GM valance and header.
Yes, I had both doors off the car at one time to rebuild the hinges.
Factory hinges with new bushings.
I can't adjust them in at the bottom hinge or the front of the door is too far in and won't line up with the rocker.
I can adjust them out at the top hinge and make the back line up fine, but then the fender has to be moved out a corresponding amount at the top and the hood to fender gaps are unacceptable.

What am I missing?
Are the factory doors just that bad a fit?

Restoration / Restoring / polishing trim rings

I have six original trim rings for my 69 Z/28.  Very slight dings and scratches.  Couple of questions:

Were these "flash chromed" originally?

If not flash chromed, where can I send them to get the small dings out and for polishing?
