Restoration / Re: stickers on core support and fan shroud 0f 69 z/28

August '69 issue of Car Life mag tests a cross ram / JL-8 Z28, and has the tune up sticker on the fan shroud- for reference. Sounds like both locations were used as JM states.

I have always been fascinated by the little 302, and appreciate your work related to the Z28/ 302- seperating fact from fiction, Etc. I surely look forward to the performance articles, but also would hate to see you quit the excellent restoration work you do!

Thanks-

Rob

Hey Nick-

If you have not already, join : http://www.northtxcamaros.com/

There are a few shops around which can do what you want, one being Car Craft in Garland I believe. I dont save my club threads, but the topic of DFW shops does come up from time to time.

Restoration / Re: Installation of factory tach and center fuel gauge in 69
« on: February 07, 2006, 06:06:13 PM »
You should be able to see an outline of the Tach cutout on the back of the cluster, you may have to look at different angles to see it- not real obvious.Since the Tach was available without the full gauge package, the wiring is addressed as an add-on in the assembly manual. See RPO U16

So if you want it- do it!

In the Chevy Chassis Service Manual, Sect 5-29 - Brakes -they say the pressure meetering valve must be depressed while bleeding. Could this have anything to do with the air aspiration ( I kinda doubt it).

The rubber in my valve must be worn out, cause it is just about impossible to depress the plunger, and the little dust bootie is worn out.

I look forward to a report on the rebuild- very good news. How much $$$ for the kit?

Originality / Re: 186 question for John Z or whoever else knows:
« on: February 06, 2006, 05:20:25 AM »
David Vizard did an exhaustive work on the 186 head _ How to Build and Modify Small Block V-8 CYLINDER HEADS_ , 1991 ISBN 0-87938-547-2

He shows, as JohnZ says, an unshrouding cut of 2.37" with a 0.25 radius into a 15 Deg floor on the intake. Also shows a cut on the exhaust side of 2.11" with 5/32" radius and 10 Deg floor.

Now then, my caveat is dont trust my numbers ( I would trust Mr H's). But you are leaving lots on the table if you dont make the cut(s). I highly recommend the book BTW.

General Discussion / Re: 302DZ balancer

I have an old Chevy performance Parts Cat (2001) that shows PN 12555879 8" for 70-74 Z28 and L82, and ZZ4, says it is 1 11/16" at ring. 7 th edition of Chevy Power from 1994 says 1969 Z-28 used a 1 5/16" damper PN 3947708, which is discontinued. They also showed the 1970 LT-1 and L-82 to be 8" x 1 11/16" PN 6272224. I have a 7704 damper which is 1 5/16 ", came off a '69 Chevrolet, and also had the -772 fan. Now since my damper is long gone, I need one as well! A buddies Z is apart right now, but I was thinking his damper said 7708L, and looked fatter than 1 5/16".

So, to make a long story longer, what IS the word on this!!!

General Discussion / Re: Camel hump heads and oil pressure
« on: February 06, 2006, 04:44:14 AM »
...and the people said " yes, the camel hump heads will work on the 307 CI mill"!  And, to check oil pressure, buy a capillary style ( bourdon tube I think) oil gauge and attach it to the oil pressure tap at the rear of the block for an analog reading.Should be a low $$$ deal. If you are doing a new project or resurecting an old one- be sure and pressure pre-lube the rotating assembly before proceeding to fire her up.

One of my pld Chevelle buddies used to call '69 Camaros belly buttons- 'cause everyone had one. I think a coupe would be cool, I would build it the way I want to!
