The above post sums it up very well- the only other thing I can think of would be to look at the back of the crankshaft- they have kinda weird shapes, each one is unique to the stroke. Might be hard to see depending on the transmission/ flywheel/ flexplate and duct cover.

Thanks for the help. Ill try and take a look at it. I do think the engine has been rebuilt, but ill try and find out what i can

Maintenance / 1969 Rear Spring Rates?
« on: January 20, 2010, 03:09:18 PM »
I may have this all wrong- but in looking at spring rates (rear) the Z28 shows a rate of 103, while other base models have up to 126 Lbs, while the 427 CI option shows a 4 leaf 126 Lb spring. I used the MOOG 6308 in my Z28 as a replacement, and additionally Mr. Pozzi recommends 125-150 rear rates- so why did GM choose to use such a "light" spring on the "HD" model(s), which would seem to make the car prone to oversteer?

Maintenance / Re: Holley 4053 DZ Carb accelerator pump diaphram

Ah yes, the REO Speedwagon...thanks for the reply- I spent some time on the back of an Ahrens-Fox gasoline fire truck!

30cc is the one. The 50cc was originaly OEM spec'd for a REO Commercial Chassis (Firetruck) but it is also used on aftermarket applications where racers need a huge pump shot. I doubt it has any OEM car applications.

I need to replace the accelerator diaphram on my Carb DZ 4150/ 4053.

Summit shows two- a 30 cc and 50 cc- anyone know which is correct OEM Spec?

Thanks!

I have them on my '69 Z/28- no problems but I do have manual steering. They are 1.75" BTW but the car will fry the tires in 1st and well into second so they do not seem to be too big.

who has first hand experience with these 1 3/4 headers on their car... apparantly some guys have horrible problems with them... i seem to recall using them several years back on another car... but my car now has the correct 302 engine mounts and the correct 302 frame standoffs...

anyone know just how these headers fit, especially with power steering?

thanks

Aaron

1969 X33 RS Z28, 1984, $3000...could have bought a 375 HP SS for same amount, no regrets though but I do still think about it!

I have a chrome air cleaner I bought in 1984, which was supposed to be off of a March build Z-28 ( as the story goes at least) and it has the oiled filter silk screening. This of course is dependent on wether I was told the truth back in '84!

I am pretty sure the balancer is 8", but certainly not as wide as the Z28 balancer, which is pretty wide. Do not know about the fan. I may have one ( balancer) somewhere off a '69 300 HP 350.

1969 SS350:
For the four blade fan, what is the measurement? I read the report but don't see that info. Additionally, they are difficult to find...has anyone seen them for sale anywhere?

Secondly, is 7" the correct harmonic balancer for my car?

Thanks!

General Discussion / Re: Rare 67 Z28
« on: December 03, 2009, 01:44:43 AM »
If you can find any documentation for the car- even just the VIN #, there is a fair chance you may be able to locate the car- since many 1967 Z28 survivors are accounted for. This would no doubt be a great moment for you if you could be reunited with the car. If you try to go this route, best of luck. It is certainly not out of the question that you may find the car.

Jerry MacNeish, who posted in this thread might be of help with a known VIN- I personally put a lot of stock in his knowledge!!!:

I will try to find the pics, but after going through two divorces I am not sure I still have them. The car was setup for drag racing and I was told that it was almost identical to the cars Penske was running in the Can Am series at that time. I know that the Penske cars had 4 wheel disc brakes and of couse he modified the suspension for road racing, but the engine, headers, intake that was all the same.

Most of you know this, and not to reflect on the car in question, but my references show an early prototype small block cross ram to have been developed 10/67, reviewed by Chevrolet Engineering and Smokey Yunick, and finally released after tweaking as a heavy duty service part- over the counter December '67 for homologation into '68 Trans Am series.

Originality / Re: Original Air Cleaner for 69 SS
« on: December 01, 2009, 05:58:32 PM »
I found and posted here or at Camaros.net several '69 option sheets / advertizements in books like CAMARO 1967-1969 Fact Book by Dobbins, et al, and Michael Lamm's the Great Camaro. On page 47 he shows air intake inlets on a 1968 Rally Sport, and the bright engine accents on page 54...these guys were real pioneers in trying to document this stuff early on- but they natuarally did not always get it right- so if people of enhanced knowledge and a myriad of research done, it is most likely correct. Kinda like "this movie based on a true story"...how much is true???  Kurt, Jerry M and JohnZ havethis stuff pretty well pinned down.

The various order forms and price lists throughout the year show that the 69 Camaro SS included 'bright engine accents' or '....350 engine with bright accents'. As was discussed above, the valve covers were painted, leaving only the chrome air cleaner as an 'accent'.
