Maintenance / fuel pump gasket is leaking oil
« on: March 13, 2006, 11:37:16 PM »
I have a oil leak via my fuel pump on my '69 camaro. I was going to do this job myself (first timer) and possibly replace the entire fule pump?? Mechanic wants 172.00 for the entire fix!

Any thoughts as to replacing the pump?
Any special do-not's or any special upgrade in fuel pump advice would be appreciated.

thanks again,

Maintenance / Battery draining issue
« on: March 13, 2006, 10:33:29 PM »
Anyone, please help with my '69 camaro.

Okay, I had a short in the aftermarket radio and I thought it was constantly draining my battery. My mechanic said the alternator was shot and replaced it. Then the batteyr simply wore down andIi replaced it based on the mechanic's testing it and it not holding a charge. Two days later I go to fire up the car and it barely will turn over. After 2-3 attempts, not a single spark until I jump the car.

Any help in finding what can be draining my battery in the -69 camaro would be a great help. Any procedure I can perform to narrow down the issue. Mechanic is has too mcuh on his late to actually spend time with my car. I'm tempted to broing it to a camaro only shop in Dallas area that charges 60  bucks an hour, but the pockets are wearing thin this month.

So the alternator and battery was replaced (internal volt) and after the car sits for a day or two the battery is drained?

thanks for the support !

Maintenance / Re: 406 small block
« on: March 06, 2006, 05:33:18 PM »
Thanks for the info on the 406 and the "potential" in this engine. I did read several article thanks to your direction on the "406" and it seems to have been a great replacement and beef up to old 1st gen. engines on theri last legs??

more on engine, it has a ton of power it seems and I'm trying to get this engine optomized to run as smooth and efficient as possible. I put on an electronic choke on the holly carb. 4 bbl and it has a Elderbrock victor Jr. Intake manifold.

I  had it timed, and I replaced the oil. plugs, ect..  I think I really need to beef up the starter? the car runs well ( I think) and has a bit of smoke at start up that disspears. the exhaust/fumes seems a bit " strong" and the engine idles pretty well and does not bang, but I have no idea what to compare it to? in other words, is it running as it should or not?

I have a rebuild TH350,  373 geared posi, flowmaster exhausts and a 2800 stall converter.

So the big question I have is what can i do to get this engine up to par without killing the pocket book so fast??

thanks for the help again !

Maintenance / 406 small block
« on: February 27, 2006, 10:25:01 PM »
Okay..I have yet to actually id my engine to verify that I was told it is a 406 small block? I had no idea Chevy even made a 406 small block or maybe the seller is blowing smoke up my exhaust?
Can anyone help here?  How can really identify my engine? Is there a master data base I can find that will match block id numbers?

thanks for the help..

Maintenance / Sputters and dies ! HELP
« on: February 27, 2006, 10:12:35 PM »
I recently purchased a 69' Camaro that had no choke that sputtered and dieed until fully warmed up. I just had an electronic choke put on it and the engine runs much better and smoother. BUT, the first few seconds after starting the beast, I usully have to keep a slight increase in RPM to prevent it from sputtering down. Again, after a minute or two, the beast runs pretty good.
Any help or suggesstions would be greatly appreciated.
 FYI:
I set and replaced the plugs. Put on new cables and had the engine timed too?
