Originality / Re: JL-8 Question
« on: August 29, 2015, 02:39:51 PM »
If it originally had power disc brakes, the JL8 would not have the proportioning valve like the regular J52 would.  If it was originally drum brakes it would have a different master cylinder compared to the disc brakes.  If all the brake stuff was switched out for racing then it would be pretty tough to know for sure.  Does it have the disc brake brake pedal?

1969 - Orphans / 9N710447 Muncie M22
« on: January 07, 2011, 01:46:27 AM »
The ad lists the VIN as 10447 but I'm guessing it's really 710447.

http://southjersey.craigslist.org/pts/2147496741.html

REAL M22 Muncie dated P9P24C (P=Muncie, 9=1969, P=September, 24= 24th day of month, C=M22 (close ratio) Built late 1969 model run-GM was on strike for the start of the 1970 model year run so the 1969 Camaros were built-out longer than normal due to the new 1970 body style being delayed. This date would have been for 1970 if not for the strike. It is VIN'd 19N10447 which indicates 1969 Camaro Norwood assembly plant most likely a Z28 or L78 model. 10 spline input (no grooves) and 27 spline output, correct castings, all original bolts. This trans is COMPLETELY restored inside and out. A cast iron mid-plate was used to add strength and lessen the chance of case failure. All original GM parts were used including Hyatt New Departure bearings and complete synchronizers. NO ITALIAN OR ASIAN REPLACEMENT GEARS!!! It was considered a HD unit but NOT for its non-helical 22 degree cut gears, but for the 12-roller front and rear bearings used. A vehicle with 4.11 or numerically higher rear ratios is recommended due to the 2.20:1 first gear ratio. This unit is restored to showroom condition. reply to listing with phone number if interested. NO TIRE KICKERS, NO HAGGLERS. This is the real deal and the price is well worth it. I've seen people pay $1200 for a "nice" used one only to find it needs another $1000 of work. I also stock a full supply of M20 and M21 units. Leave phone number NO QUOTES VIA EMAILS.

Be careful giving out your full VIN, scam artitsts will read these posts and restamp an engine block with your VIN and then contact you saying they have your original motor.

How many different fonts(stamps) did they use for the VIN in 68?  It seems like there are 3-4 different fonts at different times of the year it looks like.

Yeah, I see what you're talking about when using IE8.  I wonder if it's something to do with the fact that the lines with the long underscore is actually the widest part of the table being dsiplayed.  The text below the last underscore line acts like normal.  I'm wondering if IE8 is misjudging the width needed.  Have you tried shortening those underscore lines to be about the same width as the longest line of words?  I'm just starting to work with web based stuff so I don't the formatting well enough yet.  But there do seem to be some issues with IE8 from what I've been reading.

Did you find the problem, it looks ok to me right now using IE6?

Here's a picture of my 69 Z28 JL8 car I got from the original owner, he said it was taken in 1974 the day he sold the car.  Looks kinda plain with the flat hood.  ;D

I thought I saw someone post about a 67 L78 motor with the partial VIN of 253... and was wondering if that is the highest(latest) known 67 L78 VIN.

Decoding/Numbers / 67 trim tag group 3 options

Would a 67 Camaro with the chrome pedal trim require the 3S on the trim tag?  Also, would the wheel opening moldings and chrome roof drip molding require the 3K on the trim tag?

We went over to Russo-Steele [10 min drive] and checked out a JL-8 cross-ram Z/28; Le Mans blue very well done car. Hearing it run with chambered and probably the 140 cam was worth the price of admission. It did sell;

They have the blue RS JL8 crossram car listed as sold at $198K.  There are a couple more JL8 cars that are listed as sold (one for $187K) but I wonder if it was really sold or just a high bid.  It seems the buyers are still willing to pay for good original cars with paperwork.

My bad, I just noticed on the R&S site that those were results from previous auctions even though they were mixed in with the Scottsdale 2009 stuff.  So I'm not sure what the blue car was bid up to or sold for.

You can't compare Corvettes to Camaros since all Corvettes were all pretty much sports cars.  The Camaro is a low cost sedan that has lots of performance/dress up options but also came in a very base stripped down model so grandma could get to the store.  So a Z28, SS, RS, Pace Car, COPO all have highly desired options which enhance the car.  Jerry is certifying or verifying that a car is one of these models.  He then goes on to explain the level of authenticity and originality.  There are no standards for certifying Camaros so never assume anything.  I'm sure Jerry has certified lots of Z28's even though their original drivetrain may be long gone.  Paperwork and other original parts help to identify some of these models.  Old dealer records he might have also help to verify certain cars.  We all seem to be using Jerry as an example here, but what about the Mopar certifications and Ford certifications?  How are they done?  I've personally seen an AAR Cuda or Challenger TA that was 2 car halves welded together!  What do they do with cars like that?  This is not specifically a Camaro issue, it's a classic car issue.  Look at the number of LS6 Chevelle convertibles that seem to be popping up lately.  Lots of fake buildsheets running around with Chevelles now, so never assume paperwork is legit without checking with an expert that particular make/model car.

Carlisle was in June.  I'm sure Jerry had plenty of time between June and October to send the final report.  But I'm sure Jerry will post back up when he returns from his trip.  Way too much speculation going on here especially for such an important subject.  In the end, the car has an obvious restamped engine and nobody should be willing to spend $125K unless the color matches their jacket!  ;D

I can understand your frustration with not knowing what "certified" means, but if you never ask "what does the certification mean", it's the same as never asking "what does matching #'s mean".  You basically assumed you knew what "certified by JM" meant and took it at face value.  Do any of these people who certify or authenticate cars go and scrape paint off to check for welding around the hidden VIN areas?  I seriously doubt it.  I'm sure this same scenario is why Ed C stopped certifying COPO cars.  People twist the meaning to be deceitfull and misrepresent a car to make profit off of it.  Since we can't seem to get a standard definition of "number's matching", I know we'll never get a standard definition of "certified".  That shouldn't stop people from wanting to get their car certified, Jerry provides a great service to help people restore their cars back to original by pointing out things that are incorrect.  If you want to buy a car that is certified, ask to see the entire report and any hesitation should raise a flag.

What year car?  I'm guessing 67 if the VIN is on the door post.  Sounds like somebody took the VIN and title from a trashed car and put them on this body.  If the hidden VIN up on the cowl doesn't match the title, that's not a good sign.
