Wow, you are older than dirt, aren't you.  Cheesy

Who was the driver of the 57 you were associated with? Yes, it's true that many cars got driven to the track in the old days. Paul van Valkenburgh drove his Camaro to the track in the 1971 Trans-Am series although by that late date, it was certainly more the exception than the rule.
in paul's book about GM racing he listed my friend clark irwin's name

also those systems cause air turbulence around the carb air bleeds unless you use the L-88 screen on top of the carb to straighten out the air flow if you run without a air filter

Has anyone tested the power gain from an open element filter to a cowl induction setup? Just curious if it actually was a benefit.
you gain 1% in HP for every 10 degrees you lower the intake air temp

this type air cleaner was originally supplied for the Z-11 impala drag cars.
also was used on the 63 NASCAR impalas with the "mystery" engine at daytona

back in the day I was a stocking dealer for KUSTOM headers. jerrys stahl headers were good but they were heavier than some other brands and extra weight on the front of a race car is not good.

OK, now that makes sense. Thanks for that extra information.
I sent you a email with the sketch

Thanks for the recollections. Pretty neat that you worked alongside Bill Howell in Vince's group. Certainly a wealth of technical know-how in that group. It does not seem logical to me to defeat the dampening properties of the harmonic balancer but obviously it was done.
the inter part of the damper where the 3 screws went thru was slotted so the outer ring could still move radially . the screws were there to keep the outer ring from coming off. I can't post pictures here so I can't show you

The earlier chevy rods were too weak and required a lot of massaging to last a race or two, the later (2.1 journal) rods were stronger. TRACO (when possible) used Carillo rods and Bartz used the 427 rods, both worked well.  i built several Daytona 500 engines using the 427 rods in SBC but they also broke and we referred to them as vbince piggens peanut butter rods
