Restoration / Chassis and suspension component colors
« on: February 26, 2006, 07:26:47 PM »
Are all suspension and chassis components the same old GM chassis black that DuPont advertises?  Specifically front subframes, control arms, springs, rear axles, etc.  Thanks for any input.  Dave

General Discussion / Re: 69 Camaro How many left.

Just a small opinion to interject.  This industry and our infatuation with the 1st gen should be based on appreciation for the cars, not strictly investment potential.  I will be the first to admit that knowing your vehicle is financially sound is nice, but this replacement shell is more appealing than a still half rusty hull with a bunch of rust still lurking in the seams.  Just make sure YOU are smarter than the idiots that will be pirating these shells and we can all live on the same field.  As it is now a fools beware market, this is just a new angle on the same old idea--making a nice car that you should enjoy.  Dave

What is the earliest 69 in the database?  I have 500304 with some decent documentation of a base 327/pg combo.  8D by the way.  Dave

Decoding/Numbers / EARLY 69 NORWOOD ALTERNATE VIN
« on: February 20, 2006, 10:02:00 PM »
FROM YOUR RESEARCH TOPICS:

Engine Partial VIN stamping:
Some Van Nuys-built (LOS/VN) cars had the VIN stamped on the pad of the block and some had the VIN stamped down by the oil filter. Sometime in October of 1968, we believe the stamp was moved to the oil filter, but by sometime around February of 1969 we believe the stamp moved back up to the pad.
On Norwood cars, we believe the change to the stamping location did not occur until sometime around December 1968, and then did not move again.

We want to verify these general statements, and pinpoint more exactly when these changes occurred.

I HAVE A CAMARO VIN 124379N500304, BUILD DATE 8D.  OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A VERY EARLY 69 WITH 2BBL 327.  THE ALTERNATE VIN IS STAMPED UNDER THE OIL FILTER BOSS ON SIDE OF BLOCK IN ROUGH CAST AREA.  I HAVE MANY PHOTOS OF BLOCK, NUMBERS, ETC.  ALSO ENGINE CAST DATE IS M-8, EXPLAIN THAT.  I CAN SUPPORT ANY ADDITIONAL RESEARCH THAT YOU MAY WANT TO FOLLOW UP ON.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 302 Block ?

LET'S START FROM THE BEGINNING.  YOU HAVE A COWL TAG DESIGNATING 1ST WEEK OF DECEMBER BUILD (12A) AND A NORWOOD SEQUENCE OF 130231.  YOUR VIN IS 9N685148.  1969 WAS A LONG PRODUCTION YEAR WITH BUILDS IN DEC. 68 AND DEC 69.  YOUR VIN SEQUENCE IS CAR NUMBER 185148 (STARTS AT 500000 FOR 1969.  THIS JIVES WITH THE DECEMBER 69 BUILD (CHECK OUT PRODUCTION TOTALS IN YOUR RESEARCH).  YOU SAY YOU CAN SEE A PRTIAL VIN DOWN LOW WITH N685???.  IF YOU LOOK AT YOUR VIN THESE NUMBERS ARE PRESENT, THIS COULD BE REAL IF YOUR OBSERVATIONS ARE TRUE AND CORRECT.  THE ONLY ODDITY I FIND IMMEDIATELY IS THE ENGINE WAS BUILT IN SEPT AND CAR BUILT IN DEC.  THIS IS QUITE A SPREAD IN DATES, BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE.  DON'T FORGET, A LOT OF THESE ENGINES WERE BUILT AND 1970 INTRODUCTION WAS POSTPONED FOR A WHILE.  ENGINES BUILT FAR AHEAD OF SLATED Z-28 ORDERS COULD BE VERY POSSIBLE IN THIS CONFUSING NIGHTMARE OF GM DEVELOPMENT.  DON'T MISS THAT THESE CARS WERE BUILT IN NORWOOD AND LA (VAN NUYS).  THE NOR SEQUENCE OF 130231 ALSO JIVES.  LASTLY, THE REAREND IS NOT A BIG DEAL, LOTS OF THEM BROKE.  NO AXLE HAD VIN NOTATION ANYWAY.  HOPE THIS HELPS, ALL OF THESE ANSWERS CAN BE FOUND WITHIN THIS SITE WITH A LITTLE PATIENCE.  DAVE
