Original Cars and Details / Re: Yard find 1969 Z/28 RS

Wiper arms were installed after the cowl was painted, so there should be no overspray on them.

Nothing on that VIN.

Research Topics & Reports / Re: 186 and 041 heads used for 1969

Thanks! That is one more datapoint that confirms what was put into the head report:
> The 3947041 was a Tonawanda casting that was used in the L48 engines built at Tonawanda. The 3927186 head was used for the Flint-built L48 and Z28 applications.

John wrote a lot, including a book about his time at Chevrolet and GM that we are pleased to publish.
http://www.camaros.org/library.shtml#report lists all his content (and Chevy service documentation).

The Automobile Business - from the Bottom Up by John Hinckley is a direct link to his book. It's a fun read.

Here's the NYT article.

Lots of ads, there was a real push, but I've never seen any documentation that it was backed up by an actual sale. Unlike the 67 PaceSetter sale where Chevrolet reduced prices on some options. http://www.camaros.org/geninfo.shtml#pacesetter

Originality / Re: Cowl Plenum treatment

I assume your asking about a non-Z28 car.
Plenum would be body color.

Probably bumped the stamper in between stamping the two imprints.

Kurt,
Do you think the guy noticed the first stamp was out of line, then corrected it on the second? Were they stamped at the same time?... D
I'm confused - I don't see any correction.
Here's how the stamper worked:
JohnZ says: The hidden VIN stamp device (made for us by the George T. Schmidt Co. in Chicago) used in the body bank was suspended from overhead (it was heavy). Think of a sliced hard-boiled egg, where each slice was a rotor with letters and numbers on its outside diameter. Every second actuation advanced the rotor(s) one unit, and an internal air cylinder pressed/rolled the "egg" against the sheet metal, with an anvil on the other side of the sheet metal. The rotor(s) were driven and indexed via gear teeth on their inside diameter.
Kurt says: it indexed every second actuation because there were two VINs to stamp on every car.  And if they missed stamping a car, the index would be off by one and need advanced manually.

Legit stamp. Sold for $2000.

That's not another L, that is just part of the stamp itself.

I think it's all factory, btw.

JohnZ said:
Yup, the operator bumped the "egg" while he was re-positioning the tool and knocked one of the number rings off-index; I've seen that before. Nobody paid any attention to it in the plant, as it was "invisible" - the heater or A/C case was installed over it before the body got to the first Chevy Trim Line inspector.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1968 Queue Jump ?
« on: December 02, 2023, 04:23:37 AM »
It was a factory error, the VIN stamper didn't index correctly to the next digit.
The factory may have corrected it, but I think it more likely was done when someone was importing it. Easier to argue about a correction then an error. JMO.

I find it more interesting that the leading 7 is missing on both stamps....

The car was finished about 6/6, so possible.

I KNOW THE REAREND HOUSINGS WHERE CAST BUY EATON BUT WHERE THEY ASSEMBLED THERE OR WAS THAT DONE AT THE GM FACTORY
That is incorrect. The housings were cast by GM.
Eaton only supplied the posi - and only 25% of the Camaros got it.
