Originality / Re: Spoilers and head rest
« on: November 22, 2005, 06:51:29 AM »
I don't often get to clarify a JohnZ post. :)

Headrests on early 69 cars were optional (RPO A82), but the factory included them on all cars unless they were deleted on the order via RPO AR1.
There were some people who didn't want this mandatory option and the dealership was authorized to remove the headrests, install a plug, and credit them the $16.90.
I won't even get into the screwy price change that happen on 1/1/69.....

Car was built in July of 68. VIN confirms it.
I personally wouldn't bother with the engine pad pic (no disrespect to Pat :) ).
I would find the axle code, since that will confirm if it is original to the car and hence what the car was.

The axle is not original to the car. Looks like it is out of a 71 Nova.
I assume the casting # is actually 3969341, I don't know of a 3969340.
BL W1302 is a 71 format. I didn't realize they made a 12 bolt this year. Camaros were all 10 bolts, Novas could have a 12 bolt.
BL - 3.07
W - Warren, MI plant
130 - 130th day of year
2 - 2nd shift

Yes for 67 cars. No for 68 & 69.

Originality / Re: Black Firewall Paint

I agree with John, the bottom of the hood has been repainted.

There was no issue with the types of paints. They only used lacquer. And the blackout of the firewall did not vary by model, every car should have gotten it, regardless of color. The blackout was to make the firewall uniform.
Can you post pics showing this?

Not uncommon to see some body color on the tag and the top of the firewall. The firewall blackout didn't always cover the top edge. I'm interested in seeing any pics of a car having color on the main part of the firewall.

I know of one car that did have green on the firewall. A silver 69. I need to ask for some more details on that car.

Sorry, nothing on that car.

I'll try to be clearer.
The VIN and tag tells nothing more than the info posted by Daniel. No other engine info and no trans or any other info.

Correct on the style trim.
2 fuel lines means it was a L35 or L34 (325 or 350hp) 396.

5873
It would have the hockey stick stripes.
The decode above show all the options that the tag shows.
1 or 2 fuel lines?

Originality / Re: Another 1968 Z28 question - Cowl Hoods?
« on: November 15, 2005, 06:42:25 AM »
No. Never from the factory.

Cowl plenum was available in 67-8. Hood didn't change, "it was an air cleaner assembly that had an air duct bolted up to the fire wall".

Unbolt the alternator (unbolting the bracket can be easier) and snap a pic of the #'s. That will tell us a lot more.
Also, the casting # on the rear of the block would be helpful.

Default stripe for your car would have been none.
From the info you've posted, it could be that someone ordered a convertible and then added the blue nose stripe, ala the pacecars. Your car was built after the pacers were available and maybe someone still wanted one.....

Can you post a picture of the cowl tag or send it to me? Also, what's the VIN?

I split this into a new topic.
I've never seen a stamp like that. Can you get a picture of the code? That similar to a 71 stamping format, but the 12 bolt was gone by then.
What is the casting # and date from the center section? (See Decoding on this site for the locations.
Also, can you post the cowl tag and VIN for the car?

Originality / Re: 68 L78 radiator core
« on: November 10, 2005, 10:27:08 PM »
The axle ratio did not have any affect on the radiator from the factory.
I'd say that if everything is in good condition, it shouldn't be an issue. And just how many miles would you drive with that ratio anyway. :)

I'd have to see all the #'s, but from that limited info, it looks like something's not right.

What's the cowl tag say?
