General Discussion / Vintage assembly plant videos
« on: August 26, 2009, 07:33:28 AM »
I just found these videos on Youtube. The first set is Fisher. The second set is Pontiac, but the same basic timeframe and process. Some great footage!!
Nice overview of the process. I've never seen the interior trim parts being made. Great footage of the paint spraying.

1970 Fisher (one of four):

1971 Pontiac (first of eight):

That Youtube guy also has a bunch of interesting Chevy commercials...

Also a 3-speed floor shift was standard on SS and not shown on documentation.
Actually, the column shift 3 speed was standard on the SS350. :0

Any wiring harness from a 70+ GM car should be able to donate the plug. You'll just have to splice it or somehow connect it to your 69 harness. Shouldn't be hard.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Strange VIN on orphan 69 L78 (?)
« on: August 09, 2009, 06:20:09 PM »
My Nova buddy is baffled too. The pad is too late for that VIN (if the 1 was a W).
If that was 9N655092, that would almost make sense. Can you tell for sure what the digit is before the 55?

I'd skip that one. It's a restamp. :(

« on: August 09, 2009, 03:18:40 AM »
So is it correct to assume that I indeed have NOS ones and not service parts?
NOS and service parts are pretty much the same thing, at least as the terms are used today.
Straight ones would not be original for most 1st gens.

199 is the cast date (Julian style).
A2048 - A is unconfirmed, some say shift but I think plant, 204th day of 68.
