Where are the Julian date codes located on the parts?

M/C date is on the side of it.

Pat,
The 67 VIN had a spot for the Delivery Date to be stamped. Most dealers didn't do it.

The VIN wasn't used in the plant for any tracking and wasn't looked at (still true today). Which would indicate that info embossed on it wasn't production related.

Mark,
Most of the non-IPC cars that have embossed VINs have do not have docs. And none of them appear to have any special attributes.

Originality / Re: 68 M21 question
« on: December 30, 2009, 12:33:43 AM »
A few details. L35 could only get a M20. L34 could get a M20 or M21.

M22's were not available in 67.   67 Z's and L78's only got M21's.

The instrument cluster would be painted dark green on the sides of it.

The headrests of a dark green interior fade to black. Look at the bottom side of the headrest and it will be green.

Yes, it should be only the rear guards. The fronts were done by Chevrolet and wouldn't show on the tag. The version (3.68) of the decoder on my computer says rear guards.

Mark,
Yes, the date was embossed on the tag by the plant for some reason. But of all the embossed tag I've seen, only the pacers have something to do with GM. None of the others have docs that connect them to GM.
It could have been done for some other unknown reason. Hence why it should be labeled as a theory. ;)

My 02E Z28 from the LOS plant has it,I think it dates about 54 days before the car was built. ???
I just stopped by and looked in the garage for you. :)                         Well, in the db actually.....
It's dated 038 8, so about a month ahead.

Originality / Re: 1969 Base car
« on: December 27, 2009, 05:37:04 AM »
I guess you could get a base car and add some options.
This is the reason I hate the term 'base car'. And why it's not used on the site pages.
If you're talking X-codes, that means a car without style trim. So a X66 L78 is a base car??
If you're talking engines, a car with power windows, dlx interior, gauges, AC, etc, but a 307 is a base car??

I'll say there is no such thing as a base car. A car with a base engine, yes. A sparsely optioned car, yes. A car without style trim, yes. :)

I will add that I think Mark's statement of the use of the code is a theory.
There's still not a lot evidence to back it up.

The format of the code has been month and year. Hence 096 makes more sense than 09C.

If you switch to macro mode (little flower symbol) and back off a little, the pic will be clearer.
