General Discussion / Excessive Oil usage on 302's
« on: March 16, 2024, 03:14:37 AM »
I've never seen this bulletin before. And note that it's not the normal all-yellow TSB. It does not have the word Dealer in the title either.

General Discussion / JohnZ's assembly article
« on: February 18, 2024, 03:12:22 AM »
I updated John's assembly article. I added some more pictures within the text and then added other assembly pictures in galleries. It went from about 20 original pictures to almost 50 high-quality pictures
http://www.camaros.org/assemblyprocess.shtml
Lots of details in the pictures - you can see the broadcast code on the rear brake drum, the carb covers to make sure parts don't fall into the carb, the broadcast sheet taped to the axle, etc. And you can see John off to the side in one of the pictures. :)

I found this GM writeup on prepping the 302 for H-D service. I also posted it in the General forum.

I also found some information on the 2x4 intake.

General Discussion / Donating to the CRG
« on: November 09, 2023, 01:07:29 AM »
I've had many people ask over the years if they could donate to the CRG to help offset our expenses. Those server hosting expenses mainly have been shouldered by Doug Depew for many years (thank you Doug!).
I have setup a separate Paypal account to accept donations to CRG.
Here's the link: paypal.me/CamaroResearchGroup.
To be clear, donations are not required, any amount is appreciated, and donations have no connection to your CRG forum activity. :)

Thanks!
Kurt

We have evidence that some of the LOS-built Z11's and Z28's with spoilers had decklid stripes that extended onto the rear lip of the decklid. On NOR-built cars and early LOS cars, the stripe ended at the spoiler, as shown in the attached picture.
We are looking to define how common of a practice this was at LOS so I'm looking for any original LOS-built cars (or original pictures) out there that show either paint method. Again, this is only relevant to Z28's with factory spoilers or Z11 pace cars. Post the build date if you know it.

Thanks!
Kurt

General Discussion / Engine weight comparison
« on: June 06, 2023, 02:57:25 PM »
I ran across this comparison of engine weights - complete engines less bellhousing, flywheel, and clutch. Think DZ vs L78 vs L89 vs ZL1. This is comparison of nominal weights - a L78 vs a LS6 vs a L88 are going to have some minimal weight differences.
All variances (in parentheses) are from the iron small block.

Small block, cast iron   -   520 pounds
Small block, iron w al head  - 480   (-40)
Small block, al head & block - 389  (-131)

Big block, cast iron   -       754  (+234)
Big block, iron w al head  - 660 (+140)
Big block, al head & block - 501 (-19)

Research Topics & Reports / 1968 steering linkage
« on: March 23, 2023, 08:37:10 PM »
The 68 steering linkage usage is complicated - we've known that and the 68 Z28 usages show that. http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=7610.msg187060#new

So let's expand that to all 68's and see what we can figure out
Looking for some vehicle info: body date, plant, manual or power steering, drums or discs, and engine. And the pitman, idler, and steering arms (which connect to the outer tie rods) forging numbers.

General Discussion / COPO 9665 - TH350
« on: February 06, 2023, 03:06:36 AM »
The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission was officially offered as an option (RPO) in 1969. But in 1968, Chevrolet used the COPO system to create a Turbo Hydra-matic 350 transmission test fleet before the new transmission was released. COPO 9665 was engineered to allow the use of the TH350 transmission in the 1968 model year cars. The intent was to get real-world test miles on the vehicles before production began in 1969 model year.
The test fleet included full-size Chevrolets, Chevelles, Novas, and Camaros. The vehicles were initially assigned as Chevrolet company cars, for use at both at the assembly plants and at the division level. Afterwards, they were sold as used company cars.
The cars were built with several different engine models and over a range of build dates. For the Camaro test vehicles, the TH350 was available with the base 327 (210 hp), the L30 (327/275hp), and the L48 (350/295hp). All three engines have been observed in 68 Camaros, though the L30 appears to be the most common. The engines will have unique engine suffix codes of MI, EN, and MF. The cars were built at both LOS and NOR assembly plants, but most were built at Norwood. Production was from May through the end of 68 production in July.

I added a bunch of service bulletins and other info.

General Discussion / AC in 69's
« on: May 23, 2022, 05:28:18 AM »
For the numbers junkies. I was looking at some data about AC usage in 69's. The AC distribution caught my eye.
18% of 69 Camaros had AC (vs 60% of full-size cars!). A higher percent of AC (23-29%) was on the lower performance engines.

Of the cars with AC, 88% were automatics, 12% were manuals. It did vary by engine. The base engines w/ AC were 8-9% manual. But if you ordered an SS with AC, it jumped to 23% manual trans.

So most people bought automatic drivers with AC, but if you were going for a performance version with AC, then you were more likely to get a manual trans (compared to low-po cars).

This 3/68 memo shows the 302 8 qt aluminum oil pan was being released for service in 68, but it never happened....

The May 68 Tech News shows that JL8 was about to released for late 68 production (didn't happen) and they thought about releasing the single piston disc brakes as a running change in 68, but changed the time to 69 model year.

General Discussion / Picture uploading
« on: March 22, 2022, 11:26:57 PM »
I added some software to the site that allows for larger pictures to be used -  it automatically resizes the pictures and the file. Seems to work pretty well, but if the original photo is really large, the compression may still be larger than the 200kB limit. It will either tell you that or it may show an error.
btw, it automatically downsizes the pictures to 1024 wide x 800 high (or whichever is greater), so that fit on the screen better.

The picture of my car was originally 3393x1973 and was 633kB.
