Originality / Re: Underhood photos of 69 L78 RSSS

Oh, I almost can't stand it. That is so close to what my car is supposed to be and hopefully will be again. Same color, RS, L78, same hubcaps, endura bumper, etc. What kind of cash are we looking at spending to get to that level. I have most, not all, but most of the parts. I need to get the body and some parts restored and then put together. Still I'm sure it's is presently beyond what I can afford. I once was one who was going to add all kinds of options but this site & Team Camaro have convienced me to just put it together like it was originally. Anyone know where I can get some 69 air for the tires?

Does anyone know if front shock # 3192826 is correct for a 69 Camaro? The ad says they came off  a 69 Camaro SS350 and have a 24 69 date. I have a set of #3192481's with 312 68 dates that I pulled off a 69 SS 350 many years ago. The problem with my used set is that at least one of the two has almost no resistance left in it.

Would that cast number have been used for anything other than Camaros, Firebirds and possibly Novas? And would  warranty replacements have commonly not been stamp coded? If that was a new cast number for 67 production, could Delco have been mass producing that MC as early as the end of June 66?

OK, finally found time. Good news bad news. Cast number is 5452310 with a cast date of 181 which should be June 29 on a 10C car. The pad has no code stamped into it. I cleaned it and used a flashlight  and took my time. There is nothing. This car has been in my possession since September of 1976 and I never changed the MC. One good feature about this car is it was never messed with much and contains most of its original parts. So I assume either the MC has been changed prior to my purchase or if the cast number is correct,  could the person doing the machine work on it have forgotten to stamp it? And then if thats possible, it sure would have laid around for a long time. Sorry I can't be of more help. By the way this is a manual drum car.

I took apart a 69 SS350 about 20 years ago and the spindles had a light to medium blue along with white on both sides. Car was a early Dec 68 build from Norwood. I own some NOS inner and outer tie rods and they have small pink markings on the ends.

Cool! Your block was cast on my 8th birthday.  Can I have it as a late birthday present? Just kidding. Very early build. I couldn't read the letter code of the TT, but this must be 1st week of September. I have an RS built at the same plant that is a 10C and the early cars have several unique features or non features that were later changed. I like that your transmission still has the metal part number tag.

GM drum brake shoes of this period have a groove running down the middle to show when pad was worn down to a level where they should be replaced. I do not know if any aftermarket shoes did that. Wheel cylinders have a cast date much like  any other cast piece on the car.  The other items in your question I am also interested to hear about.

I have a question for JohnZ: How were the hidden vin #'s applied? Was it a gang holder with individual digits that had to be changed by 1 as the line moved? Did an assembly line employee hold it with one hand and "smack" it with a big hammer? Was there a block used on the back side to absorb the impact? I notice on Rich's picture above that it looks like the holder was hit twice and turned slightly between blows. I really think it couldn't have been that unsophisticated as there would be room for all kinds of error.

Thanks

Mild Modifications / Re: Brake booster removal for 69 camaro

Yes, under the dash attached to the brake pedal is a clevis and pin  that you will have to detach. This is the other end of the rod I am sure you can see coming out of the back of the  booster. Shouldn't take long or be hard.

« on: August 24, 2006, 03:14:57 AM »
Cool, Thats just what I was looking for. Its pretty obvious to me that the picture I started this conversation with of  the set that was sold on ebay and the set that I own, are not the correct caps. Someone bought those on ebay for big money considering what they are and then are not correct.  Now I'll have to find a set. Are the caps the same for the 3 screws holding the bracket to the inner fender as the ones you show installed on the bracket in the first two picture's. It does look to me that yours are plastic but Rich's look to be of a differant material. Differant suppliers?  I know some may think this is a small insignificant issue, but I enjoy it.

Thanks

Can you imagine the stripes on the 396 shown above on a black or British Green car? Wow, I think it would be gorgeous.

Camaro book that Michael Lamm put out in the mid 70's has a black & white picture of a 68 with a model standing beside the front fender holding one end of the multi-color stripe as if she is applying it. According to that picture, the option would have been a decal, not a painted on stripe. If I remember the notaion at the bottom of the picture, the option was for "Hugger month" which may have been February.

Originality / Re: 69 Camaro big block oil line for gauges

I finally found time to post this. The large brass fitting that screws into the block I bought used. The brass reducer was bought NOS from Irv Schroeder Chevrolet-Hillsboro KS in the early 80's. Notice how the reduction looks smaller on mine than yours. The steel line, brass connector, nylon line was purchased as 1 unit from the same dealership on a differant transaction. As I recall it took awhile to get as I think it was sourced from another dealership out of Canada.  The only piece I am missing is the bracket that bolts along the top edge of the block or bottom edge of the head ( I can't remember which is right) It has an open ended slot and the nut on the connector tightens against it.
Hope this helps.
