Decoding/Numbers / Re: Help figuring 69 out
« on: February 06, 2006, 09:54:29 PM »
I realize we're not helping much with your decoding issue...
But I have a 327 mutt myself, and it's a great car for cruising.  In your post and comments with the pics, you do not seem to be concerned about orginality issues.  Of course 327 was not an SS motor... but there are a lot of "SS" 327s on the highway today.
The front disc brakes are a good idea!  I, too, would rather have them than more hp.
Good luck on the restoration.  Let us know how it goes. ;D

Don't know if it is a scam or not... but they are still on the web. :-\
Here's what the site says,

"For Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, Cadillac, Allante, and Oldsmobile Window Sticker Reproductions

Triple A Enterprises has been printing correct window stickers since 1979 with GM's and Chryslers approval."

And I did find this in the "small print": "This document does not validate or authenticate cars."

--Of course, you cannot believe everything you see in print --even electronically.  Not sure what GM approval means... I've been watching a couple of these sites wondering if it is worth it.
What do some of you other veterans think? ??? ??? ???

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Anything on this VIN and Engine Code Question
« on: February 04, 2006, 05:50:45 PM »
I did find this info. on the web about another HN application: HN  1968  327  250hp  4 carb.  Pwrglide, reg gas. (Not sure how reliable that is?!?)  It is a 327 and has powerglide. I had been following that lead, but now you have me wondering...
I'm going to check on casting date and number.  (I just finally figured out where it is from CRG info.)  The car is stored right now about 60 miles from where I live, so that will take me several days. (Gotta work to pay for these things.)
I'm beginning to think this is a real "piecemeal" job, but everything works well, and like Rich said, it is a good driver motor.
I really appreciate the help!

Thanks Rich!
A good driver motor is exactly what I want.  I did not think this was a Camaro motor.  I'll check the casting date.
What should I do to get the car in the data base?
Love this site.  You guys are a lot of help! ;D ;D ;D

Decoding/Numbers / Anything on this VIN and Engine Code Question
« on: February 04, 2006, 03:30:25 AM »
My 68 coupe has this VIN: 124378N363264.  Is it in CRG data base?
Also, I am not sure the motor is original.
The partial VIN on the motor is almost illegible.  I can make out an F and a couple of #s but not enough to make it out.
The engine code is clear: V0614HN (The 1 looks more like an "I".)  If I read this right, then it is a Flint, Michigan, June 14, 327-250hp.  Is that right?
The cowl tag gives a 4th week of December build date.  Would that enigine code be close enough for the build date?
Help CRG ??? ??? ???

General Discussion / Re: 67 ss350
« on: January 31, 2006, 10:33:28 PM »
Daniel is right... Let me clarify... In anybody's book you know it is worth more than the bottom line $14,000 I mentioned.  I said that because you know --without a doubt-- you've got that much value in it.  Maybe it's worth $20,000+ now.  But as we both said, value is subjective and often dependent on the other guy's checkbook.  For example, I bought my 68 coupe (327, powerglide, air) a couple of years ago.  Interior and exterior it was in great shape.  I bought it for $17,500.  I could have sold it the next day for $22,000.
But I wouldn't!  At least I know, however, that was my starting point.

Please don't buy that car without starting the motor...  :o :o :o
Sounds to me like the owner is trying to price it as a SS350 clone (at least).
Don't know how much wheeling and dealing the fellow will tolerate, but I would offer around $15,000 --unless that motor sounds sweet when it starts and could be cleaned up easy.  He may not accept it... but that's not bad money for a 67 that may have been a 6 banger originally and needs some work.
I know of at least three 67s better than that here in NC that are for sale in around the $17,000+ range.
Good luck! ;D ;D ;D

Prices are very subjective and without seeing the car difficult.
But since you asked, in the Southeast the car you are describing is worth at least $14,000 and with work could go up around $25,000+.
Since you bought it new and know about the motor(s), you've got most of the value issues covered.
Check with price guides like Gold Book for ranges, and sales like Hemmings for market.
Of course, some folks on this site will tell you to sell it and restore a 69.  But as a 68 owner myself, it sounds like your 67 is well worth a restoration and many years of cruising.
I'm sure there will be plenty of other opinions forthcoming...
Good luck! ;D

One of the replica car dealers in New Jersey recently had a big article on their web site, where someone had pirated their ad on a car.  It was a really clever fraud.  Apparently several people lost large sums of money sending cashier's checks to a P.O. Box.  Needless to say, the "feds" pounced on it.
If it's too good to be true...

I know the small block matched up, but wouldn't you like to know why they put in a 327 and not another 302?!?
If you like the car (and paid a fair price) then you are not crazy.  When you drive down the road on a sunny day and everyone gives you a second look, you'll at least know there are a lot of folks who love a Camaro --Z, matching #s, or not!
Good luck on the restoration... Happy motoring!

I just want to thank Chris for starting this great discussion.  I learned a lot just reading through it.
A word about documentation: I went through an AACA judging school last year, mainly for my own edification.  While their judging is not model specific, they are very strict about what they accept for documentation.  It must be information from the manufacturer.
If there are any recognized Camaro judges out there, it would be great to know their standards.  Before the juding school, I would have said they should have told Chris those things.  But I now know only the head judge is supposed to talk to the car owner, and that is done only if the owner asks.
Also, after hearing these guys say what a great looking car Chris has, I'd love to see some pictures!  I remember 68 well.  Green was cool in 68.

General Discussion / Re: 2009 Camaro Pictures

I listened to GM's video link about the new Camaro (OK, capital C), and they implied it was not retro.  That may explain some of our dislike to the design.  Guess we will have to wait and see.... ::)
And some good news: I had supper tonight with a GM dealer who told me an initial GM notice said the price should only be about $200 more than the Mustang! ;D

General Discussion / Re: Rear Seat Removal
« on: January 10, 2006, 09:38:51 PM »
Hope you had good luck getting that back seat out.  One word of caution from my 68.  When you put the seat back in, work it back in place gently.  Sometimes the hook and holder get brittle (mine did) and they will break if you force it.  Also, it may be difficult to get the seat to go all the way back.  But it will if you work it slowly.

I have to agree with Dutch.  This is a camaro --lower case "c".  That seems to be GM's problem.  It is good that the name Camaro may get back into the GM line, however.  I hope they will refine it (and retro it) quite a bit before it comes out.  And why wait till 2009?!?   :( >:( ???
