General Discussion / Re: powerglide shifting
« on: February 21, 2006, 08:14:46 PM »
I'm a little mechanically "blind" myself.  Everything except the passing gear does seem to shift properly.  (I actually thought my "glide" was shifting into high too quckly, but the chart showed me it was right in the range.) I suspect it is in the linkage, too.  It all looks sort of thrown together.  If nothing else, I'm going to ask the shop to tighten everything up.  Next sunny day, I'm going to put my manual under my arm and see what they can do.

I'd love to know from John or anyone else if this is a common problem for powerglide.  I've owned and driven half a dozen cars with the "glide" but never seen this.

I've got the same problem... Even after adjusting the kickdown rod as far as it would go, the passing gear will not kick in.  It seems as if the rod itself is too long.  (In my case, my motor, etc. is a mutt, but it runs fine.) I had A mechanic look at it, but he couldn't get it to work.  I'm going to take my 68 service manual to my FAVORITE mechanic and see what he can do.

Has scuffing up the ball --without using locktite-- continued to work? ???
I tried the silicone and it gave way eventually even without the car wash. ::)
My concern is using the locktite and then later needing to adjust the mirror.

You might want to look at one of their websites, too.
http://www.dynacorn.com/site/04home/home.html
It will show you the 69 body --if you click on the Bodies Inc. button and then click on models.
I could not find a 67 body yet.

Thanks, John!  That's a great idea.
But I cannot imagine anyone not wanting to walk all the way around your car... twice! ;D

John,
Do you have your window sticker posted in your window or as part of some other display? ???
If in the window, where? (Driver's side front?)

Actually, that makes sense to me... I used to own a 66 mustang, and it would take at least two of them to match your 69Z Camaro! ::)
Post us a picture of this Z!
If I could afford it, I'd own every year from 67 to 72. ;D

If you are just talking about rubbing polish on it, then I agree with fiveforty.  You can take a paint shield (or a piece of cardboard) if you are afriad to get the polish on your paint.
But if you are talking about refinishing the molding, a friend of mine just took his off to be professionally redone.  He said to be very careful of the ends and any points where it joins together, in order to not mess up the fit.  Also, don't use pliers with rough edges and scratch the molding.  Make sure the molding doesn't get too bent out of its original shape, or you might put a crimp in it. He also found some wax and dirt buildup under the molding, which he compounded off.
Take your time... and good luck

It's been a month... and no more leak!  Looks like it was just the connection.
Thanks for the encouragement! ;D ;D ;D

There is a "restoration" outfit near Charlotte, NC, where they have been putting new Corvette suspensions, etc. on 1st generation Camaros for a couple of years now.  They have a 69 repo shell and have just started building a car from the ground up. (I think it is for a magazine article.  Didn't catch which magazine.)  When I asked about the price, he said, "If you have to ask, you can't afford it!"  So, it strikes me that you would be spending a lot of money, and it would still be a reproduction... which would not hold value like an original.  Dutch is right.  If folks want a repo, GM should make one in the new Camaro.
They did let me drive a 69 with the vette front end, and I did not like it.  Felt awfully jittery on those back NC roads.
67... 68... 69... I'm just happy to have an original 1st generation! ;D

Did all original L30 motors have the oil filler tube in first generation Camaros? ???
If not, why?

Indeed, a rare find!
Chevy put astro ventilation in the Camaro in 68.  If they had it in 66, I wonder why the 67 model had vent windows.  Maybe for the look?
