BTW, in 68 I know the deluxe wheel came in black, gold, red, turquoise, and blue. The part # for a deluxe black one was 9747536.

Well, your 69 should be rosewood: "The interior simulated woodgrain pattern was changed from walnut (68) to rosewood (69)." from General Information CRG.
Color should tell you --assuming you do not want to take it apart, like you said. (If you cannot tell, ask anyone who knows anything about wood or get a color chart at the hardware store. If you know what stains look like, it is easy to tell.)
As to what was most "desirable", that question has gone on between 68 and 69 owners ever since the first 69 came into the showroom...

The original 68 deluxe steering wheels matched the rest of the interior. Most of the repos for sale today do not look like the real 68 deluxe wheel.
The 69s were the ones with the wood accents.

I've been watching this thread with great interest...
Jeff, how about posting a picture of an unpainted metal power steering cap. I'm not questioning that you have one. But like John, I've just never seen one.
In the last four years I've looked at literally hundreds of 60s Chevrolets --mostly Camaros-- including judging a few. If some caps were originally unpainted, we need to know it.

If you are restoring and haven't already, get a copy of Colvin's Chevrolet by the Numbers, 1965 -1969. http://www.camaros.org/geninfo.shtml#InfoSources
From that you would know that there are multiple possibilities for a 4MV. To get an exact # you also need to know things like transmission, A.I.R., special performance, etc.

The #3917234 that you got from the AIM agrees with the original 68 Camaro part # for 396, exc. Sp. H/Per., C.A.C. Sorry I don't have the info. about the # 3925522.

Looks like you need to post on a Firebird or Cutlass (442) site. It would make sense that a black jar made by another GM division could fit your bracket. I think that bracket dates back at least to 62 for most Chevrolets. But I will tell you, Classic shows a white jar on their online Firebird site. I did find one parts company, oldmusclecars.com, that does offer a black jar as "optional" for 67 Camaro.

...When you stop to think about it, a black jar looks (or blends) "better", when you open up the hood. Although, at a show, when you see that white jar filled to the top with blue washer fluid, it sure "looks original".
BTW, the original part # for the washer jar is 3840083.

Now, that you mention it, I believe the Vette jars were more wedge-shaped on the back to fit the contour of the car. JohnZ could probably tell you more, but I think they went with black in 68 because the white jars were visible through the Vette's side "gills". My original point, however, was that GM did make black jars by 1968. That's why I asked about a part #. I'll still try to look it up for you when I get home. And let me just add, I do know that Olds was using black jars by 68. --Not trying to say yours is not an original --just trying to figure out how we can verify it...

GM did have some black washer jars in 68. Not sure about Camaro, but have seen them for Corvette. Does it have a part number on it anywhere?
