Steve,

Here is a pic of my recently completed 68 R/S for your home page consideration. It's numbers matching and restored to as close to original as I could make it. Also, I was wondering if there is an area on the site for members car profiles and "success stories" for bringing cars back from the dead like I did. Maybe it would give others hope for finding a deal out there still or finishing a current project. I picked this car up in 2004 for $2200. Of course it was a basket case and I did most of the work myself, but my point is you don't have to be Bill Gates to own/restore a first gen Camaro. Thanks, Dan

Phillip,

I know you shut down your poll but you asked to see my Tuxedo black with black vinyl 68 R/S when finished, so here it is. I'm getting tons of compliments for the color combo with pearl parchment interior, all which is original to the car. Way back I voted for keep it original but also believe it's in the eye of the beholder/owner. Good luck, Dan

Restoration / Re: Wiring harness snafoos! Help!

Ok! Wiring lesson 101. It turned out to be a loose connector inside the brand new fuse block assembly. The wire lead to the accessory side had come un-clipped due to being under strain from the way the manufacturer routed it. It seems as though it worked when the car first fired up but then shook loose after a while from the vibration. I don't think it was ever really secure from when it was made since I was unable to get it to "clip" back on until I re-routed it. So even though it's new doesn't mean it's perfect. Anyway, thanks to JohnZ for steering me in the right direction, Dan

Wow!
Too bad about the RUST. It's not everyday you find a fairly complete unrestored first gen Camaro. I'm sure you did fine on the purchase price. What I'm wondering is why the car looks to be correct as an RS with a 327 yet the cowl tag has a 4P. Doesn't that denote SS 350? Also, my two cents would be to somehow restore that thing with a plain jane donor or something. There are too many clones in this world! Good luck, Dan

JohnZ,

Am I correct then in assuming that if the car starts ok then the switch is ok and is the switch itself against the dash metal how it is grounded? I've had a friend suggest that the switch has a bad ground. Everything else seems to power up except those 3 "accessory" items, so what next?

Restoration / Wiring harness snafoos! Help!
« on: April 10, 2006, 07:24:02 PM »
Hey guys,
Just finished up my wiring harnesses and fired the car up. Everything electrical was replaced with after market harness kits from NPD including switches. Nice stuff, everything looks correct and plugged in exact. OK. Everything seams to be working except: wiper motor, heater fan, radio. I have tested these systems directly from the battery and the wiper motor, fan blower etc work. But there is no juice at the fuse block. Do these systems get there power only after the key is in the on position? I have a wiring schematic and assembly manual etc etc etc. so I'm pretty sure everything is wired correct. Is there a ground that would be associated with all 3 of these systems? Also, when I first fired the car to break the motor in, the tic toc tach was working. Now it is not. Is it a stand alone item which is only affected by the printed circuit?  The clock does work still. I may have more things as I go but that's it for now. Thanks in advance, Dan

Maintenance / Original 10 bolt oil type

What is the correct weight of rear end gear oil for an original 1968 10 bolt rear? Also how much in quantity? I haven't taken the time to dig through my assembly manual. I'm sure the info's in there if someone has a page reference I'll dig it out. Thanks, Dan

Originality / Re: Correct layout of rear seat belts

Thanks Ed,
After I posted my question I kinda figured it out. They've been out for a couple of years and I thought I would ask before installing the rear seat just to make sure. Thanks again, Dan

Originality / Correct layout of rear seat belts

Hey guys,

What is the correct layout for the 3 seat belt set-ups across the rear seat in a 68 with deluxe interior? In other words, which of the four bolts get buckle plates and which get the latches? I believe the two outside bolts only get one latch plate each correct? Then what? Thanks in advance, Dan

Originality / Re: 68 Rear package tray color?
« on: March 22, 2006, 04:03:03 PM »
Chris(Pex68),

I have read all the discussion about the Sequoia green firewall color on the other thread. I'm the one who posted in there about my Tuxedo black car having a glossy looking firewall. The first thing I did when he stopped by was have him pop the hood to look. Unfortunately, the previous owner "detailed" the engine compartment with a "rattle" can. The car has never been apart but the previous guy put an aluminum intake, chrome valve covers and air cleaner etc. on the original 327 (cool!). The good thing is, he saved all the original stuff and my friend got it all. So no help as to the firewall color. I believe he is planning to clean and cosmetically restore the car this summer and I mentioned this site to him and the discusion about the firewall. He is the 3rd owner and the car has never been restored. It was held by the original owner until 5 years ago when the previous guy bought it.

I have a friend with a 68 R/S with your same color combo (Sequoia and gold standard int.) I just looked at it yesterday and the rear tray metal band and corner metal pieces were all gold like the dash. This car is pretty much original and unrestored. I didn't pay much attention to the actual package tray but I think it was gold also. Hope this helps, Dan

My 68 R/S is tuxedo black with a black vinyl top and pearl parchment deluxe interior. It'll be done in about two weeks and the top looks cool because of the continuing "beltline" stainless moldings. Also, my dad used to run an upholstery shop and he pointed out that the factory didn't put a lot of time into the roof bodywork due to the soft backing of vinyl tops which hides many small imperfections. My upper quarter seams show the lead areas along with many little waves etc. It's a bunch more body work (which I hate) that you have to pay for if you delete the top. I voted to keep a factory top vinyl if it came that way. Besides, we all keep our cars in out of the rain right? ;-) Dan

Restoration / Re: Dash removal
« on: March 20, 2006, 06:02:14 AM »
Robert,

I did this on my 68 due to rust issues. With a little patience and a spot weld drill bit it can be done cleanly. I drilled the spot welds across the lower windshield edge (at the cowl panel area). Then there are 3 mounting tabs, two on either edge by the "A" pillar base, and one in the middle, near the radio area. It sounds primitive, but cut those with a sawzall and the whole dash face and top will come out. The fun part is finding a clean original 67 piece to put back in. Now if you car has factory a/c, you may need to leave the "face" in place for the vent/duct holes. If that's the case, drill the spot welds across the upper dash (behind the pad) and just remove the dash top that has the 68 VIN hole. Good luck!

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 67 RS?
« on: March 20, 2006, 05:46:25 AM »
I recently ran across a 68 sitting in a side yard and from the back it looked like a standard SS car (red & white tail lights and ss gas cap) and walked around the front only to find a perfect R/S front clip. The car had been sitting since 1991 and the ugly red paint job was all faded evenly. I believe the whole front clip had been changed in the past before it was painted red since none of the other R/S stuff was present. Could be the case here, that the whole clip was changed. Yours actually went further with the tail light lens change. Good luck with the restore, Dan
