If the valves are practically touching each other they are 2.02's. If there is a gap, they are 1.94's

Is that the car built Oct 68?? Shoudn't VIN be stamped next to the DZ stamp by water pump? I thought stamping near oil filter started Jan '69?

Originality / Re: 69Z Holly date code vs. build date of car?

Dave, since the carb was installed on the engine dress line at basically the same time the car was being assembled, to be "ideal", it should have a date code around April, 1969, perhaps even earlier. However, your November, 1968 carb is just a bit too far off to be "ideal", although NCRS accepts a 6 month span. But if it really doesn't matter, go with what you have, or trade for one closer to your 05A if it bugs you.

 ;)

Ed

Wasn't the engine started at the engine plant prior to shipping to the assembly plant? Did they have some sort of "cell" with temporary hook ups for this purpose at the engine plant? It makes sense the engine could not be shipped with fuel in carburetors.

Did they make these carbs in batches?? That is, a quantity run of a certain carb for a given application like the 4053?  My 10B build Oct 68 Z carb's mfg date is 872? Engine build is 0912DZ. So carb was mfg like 2 months before engine build if I'm interpreting correctly?

Sounds to me like you've answered your own question. Watch out.

A point of interest on this item: My car's VIN is 516355, very likely mfg same day as this one. My 386 block cast date is I 10 8, within one day of this one. My car is 69 Z with build date 10B.

The tag looks pretty good to me. What gives it away? That is, if it's something you want to reveal.

Jimmy V.

We don't discuss those issues in a public forum - it just gives the "tag fakers" more info to make their fakes harder to spot.

Got it. I suspected as much.

After reading my new edition for the 69 Z/28, I checked what I believed to be my original radiator (well at least I believed that the tanks were original, as I had it recored probably about 1983). It does not have the original tag that I always thought was needed to verify it as original, but after reading the book I discovered that both right and left tanks were embossed with codes as well. Sure enough both my tanks are embossed as the Jerry's book states, "CB" and "IH" I believe. When it need to be recored again, I just bought a repro instead, but kept the original. Another part I'm glad I didn't throw away!!

Yup, it is a late car and a great color. But repro tag.....

I have a 69 Z, red with a white vinyl top, and white stripes. It's also a rally sport. I think it's a fairly rare combination, but I  don't think the rarity makes it any more valuable than other Z's Just my opinion. I think rare is only a factor if whatever is rare is also desirable to most people. I really don't care if a Camaro has a fold down rear seat, or a rear radio antenna. The 302 is what I was always really after.

AC44s are not made anymore, the easy substitute is Champion J12YC.  Same plug.  This is what we use.

Jerry

I discovered the Champion J12YC several years back while checking cross referencing charts. I tired 'em and like 'em in my 69 Z. I always have a couple of sets ready to go. Seem to be easy to find as well.

Why would the paint code be special? Couldn't it be ordered 10 E, that is, black with white vinyl top?
