Originality / Re: SBC rocker arms with "O" and V markings
« on: August 01, 2008, 07:52:07 PM »
Are rocker arms reusable once they have been run?

Yes!  Inspect for wear and cracks.

Thanks John, I have the original set from my 69 Z that were replaced with new Competition Cams roller type at rebuild. Sitting on the shelf. Probably didn't need new. They'll stay with the car as all used parts that I have which are original to the car do.

How does one reference these threads if you know they are there, ie you have read in the past and want to find it later. Is there a search by subject or?
Thanks,

Thanks, just wanted to be sure. Didn't know they came on L46 Corvettes though. Is that a 350/ 350 HP?

Originality / 69 Finned aluminum valve covers
« on: July 24, 2008, 08:23:15 PM »
Were the finned aluminum valve covers in 69 a  Z/28 item only. I am now reading that these did not come optionally on the SS 350's as I used to believe.

3 speed would not be a plus IMO. Edsels are rare, but I still don't want one.

Is the timing chain cover correct? Looks like short tab type in the pic.

Maintenance / Re: Now the spark plugs are fouling -- carb overhaul?
« on: June 20, 2008, 07:02:03 PM »
Depends on how the plugs are fouling. I am going to have to rebuild my engine due to an oil fouling I suspect is from the oil ring on the piston. When the heads came off, it was quite apparednt there was an issue in that cylinder. all but the bad one have a little bit of dry carbon build up, but the bad one the carbon was thick and moist
Hopefully you dont have the same issue

Which cylinder is fouling? - I lost #7

Interesting, when I rebuilt my 302 approx 1993, it was also cylinder #7 which had ring failure/oil fouling. The idle was always erratic as well. Plugs do tell the story if you are willing to believe them.

Bad news.  Installed all the new parts and the car ran great.  Took a 5 mile drive and went back to the garage.  After sitting, the car had a hard time starting.  So, the mechanic pulled the plugs and found that they were already starting to foul.  The thought is that carb is leaking fuel through the internals and that it needs a complete overhaul.  I'm into it $700 (which included a new fuel line to replace the one I damaged).  They want $425 for the carb overhaul, P&L.  Thoughts?

if the plugs are already fouling, way too much fuel sounds correct, ie fuel leak. When you had hard time startiing, did it also idle very rough? Plugs will look black, ie lots of carbon on them if this is the case. Good luck.

General Discussion / 396 vs 427 crankshaft
« on: June 05, 2008, 06:50:30 PM »
Are the 396 and 427 crankshaft identical? I thought I read ("Chevrolet by the Numbers" by Alan Colvin) where they had different thicknesses of the counterweights to account for the difference in rotating mass?

General Discussion / Re: MECUM AUCTION

Saw the blue RS ZL-1 sold for $800,000. The market is soft?? Looks like it has 427 emblems on the ducted hood, and on the fenders. Would it have come this way? Also, it certainly does not appeal to my eye too much either.

I see Jerrys Old Reliable went to 400 grand and stopped. What a car when you hear it fired up. Good Luck Jerry Mac

So did it sell, or?

General Discussion / 14x7 YJ rally wheels
« on: May 09, 2008, 12:38:47 PM »
I have a "set" of incorrect 14x7 YJ rally wheels on my 69 Z/28. By "set' I mean that 4 of the wheels have the same mfg date, and the spare's date is approx 3 weeks earlier. They are from  June 1969. (Spare mfg May 69) If I understand correctly, could these wheels have come only from a 69 Camaro or Nova SS? Or could they have come from non SS cars? Or other possibilities?

Ed, will do. Not sure, it may take week or so for me to get a look.

Ed, I have an early Oct 68 build Z. Do you need my info?? I alway thought it was smooth, but now I'm not sure what I have. It has had one of those vinyl? wheel covering on it for a long time, so I'll have to take it off partially  to look if need be. I do know that it is the original wheel.
