Panel was definitely not glossy orginally. Saw too many of these back when they were new. 396 SS Chevelles too. They were everywhere, or so it seemed.

Were these distributors made on batches so there would be a number of them with the same date stamp? And someone in the know (like Jerry) could tell a re-stamp by a bogus date?

Thanks, I'm getting the tape from Rick's. No issues with judging; my car is a very nice driver and doesn't attend many shows; mostly country roads on nice weekend afternoons.

Maintenance / 69 Z questions
« on: September 02, 2008, 04:24:20 PM »
Am working on my 69 Z and have two questions:

1. I'm trying to remove the clutch fan/pulley from the water pump; Have removed the nuts from the studs, but the fan and pulley don't want to come off. I don't want to doing prying, etc. or I'll need a new water pump. Anyone have this problem and a solution?

2. I need to re-wrap some wiring in the engine bay. What is the tape that I need? Original looks like black friction tape? Wires are to starter so come close to engine block. Anything that resists heat that might be recommended?

Thanks,

Jimmy V.

I had had good results using gravity to bleed my brakes. Just keep bleeder fitting at the wheel attached to hose submerged in brake fluid to prevent air from backing in to the system, and leave master cylinder cover off, Also make sure master cylinder does not empty out, or you'll have to start over.

How about part no.'s and date codes on the other related parts, ie distributor, carb, water pump, alternator, starter, power steering, etc. How do these correlate? I think I'd really be trying to read the VIN near the oil filter.

General Discussion / Re: "Survivor" definition
« on: August 22, 2008, 08:03:05 PM »
Of course my reason was for asking was selfish. I was trying to decide if calling my 69 Z a survivor was a fair description. It has been repainted once, approx 1981, but has all original drive train, etc., original interior, and original white vinyl top. It is missing a few items, smog, original wheels,  and original chambered exhaust. All sheet metal is original as well. Trunk is original paint. Even still has original chrome ball on Hurst shifter, although most of the chrome has worn off. I wasn't really looking at it from a show perspective, just as an overall general descriptive term.

General Discussion / "Survivor" definition
« on: August 22, 2008, 03:04:45 PM »
The term "survivor" is sometimes used to describe the condition of a Camaro. What do others take that to mean? Original everything including paint, or mostly original, maybe a repaint. Or?

Why would someone add the "C"? Doesn't the presence of the drain plug confirm it as M22? Or if the someone didn't know that.........hmmm.

Maintenance / Re: Replacement clutch
« on: August 20, 2008, 02:27:38 PM »
Thanks for all the input; Have finished the disassembly stage last night, and want to clean bellhousing, trans, and related parts. I will then begin re-assembly with new clutch, etc. Looking good for labor day, I hope.

Will it idle? If it seems to run fine above 2000 RPM or so, (when the main jets are functioning) but runs really rough at idle or almost stalls, could be piece of dirt or varnish in idle circuit. I've had this with my Holley where something clogs a passage in the idle circuit (like dried out gas turned to varnish or dirt) and it runs like crap. I've disassembled the carb and cleaned the metering block passages, and this has solved my problem. It is amazing how a blocked idle passage in a carb probably only .032" in diameter can bring performance to a dead halt.

Originality / Re: blackout rear tailpan

As one who is close to Jerry's age and also saw many of these cars with the black tail panel from new, I can't believe this is even being disputed.

Maintenance / Replacement clutch
« on: August 10, 2008, 05:48:56 PM »
Looks like I need a new clutch for my 69 Z. Car is stock 302 with 3:73 gears. Would like something for normal street driving, and an occasional run thru the gears. Don't want serious pedal pressure. Anybody with experience/recommendations on this one? Would be replacing pressure plate, disc, and throw out bearing I think.

Could it be the pinging you can get from too low octane gasoline?

Yup, I had a friend who had that trans in a 69 Nova 6 cylinder. I remember I couldn't believe someone would want it just to save a few bucks, but I  guess a few did.
