General Discussion / "Survivor" definition
« on: August 22, 2008, 03:04:45 PM »
The term "survivor" is sometimes used to describe the condition of a Camaro. What do others take that to mean? Original everything including paint, or mostly original, maybe a repaint. Or?

Maintenance / Replacement clutch
« on: August 10, 2008, 05:48:56 PM »
Looks like I need a new clutch for my 69 Z. Car is stock 302 with 3:73 gears. Would like something for normal street driving, and an occasional run thru the gears. Don't want serious pedal pressure. Anybody with experience/recommendations on this one? Would be replacing pressure plate, disc, and throw out bearing I think.

Originality / 69 Finned aluminum valve covers
« on: July 24, 2008, 08:23:15 PM »
Were the finned aluminum valve covers in 69 a  Z/28 item only. I am now reading that these did not come optionally on the SS 350's as I used to believe.

General Discussion / 396 vs 427 crankshaft
« on: June 05, 2008, 06:50:30 PM »
Are the 396 and 427 crankshaft identical? I thought I read ("Chevrolet by the Numbers" by Alan Colvin) where they had different thicknesses of the counterweights to account for the difference in rotating mass?

General Discussion / 14x7 YJ rally wheels
« on: May 09, 2008, 12:38:47 PM »
I have a "set" of incorrect 14x7 YJ rally wheels on my 69 Z/28. By "set' I mean that 4 of the wheels have the same mfg date, and the spare's date is approx 3 weeks earlier. They are from  June 1969. (Spare mfg May 69) If I understand correctly, could these wheels have come only from a 69 Camaro or Nova SS? Or could they have come from non SS cars? Or other possibilities?

General Discussion / 69 rear brake pressure regulator valve
« on: February 08, 2008, 04:00:41 PM »
Has the CRG published a report on this valve yet? This is the one under the dirver's seat correct? Just curious, as my early 69 Z (Oct '68) does not have it. This apparently is correct, but as to when and why the valve was used is still being researched?

General Discussion / 69 Interior question
« on: January 16, 2008, 05:11:09 PM »
What option/options included the assist grip and molded plastic trim on the passenger's side? Was this Z23? And on all Custom interior cars, ie Z87? I have noticed cars without these items, and the Camaro emblem mounted above the glove box door, where it is moved more towards the center of the interior when they (assist grip and molding) are included, since the assist grip is above the glove box door.

I assume any Camaro could be ordered with these items if not already included as part of another option?

Decoding/Numbers / Trim Tag VIN correlation
« on: December 21, 2007, 02:48:33 PM »
Does a 69 Norwood trim tag with build date 02D correlate to VIN 614044? CRG chart shows end of Feb as approx 607164. Almost 7,000 units difference? Is this a significant difference?

Originality / 302 Engine blocks
« on: December 03, 2007, 03:55:23 PM »
I'm just reading www.chevy-camaro.com frequently asked questions on the 302 Z/28 and it says that all 302's had 4 bolt mains blocks. I thought 4 bolt main blocks were new for, and 69 only? Am I misreading or??

General Discussion / Ohio Pumpkin run
« on: October 08, 2007, 02:06:45 PM »
Was at annual "Pumpkin Run" car show in Owensville OH yesterday. Over 2,800 cars registered there. Didn't see a whole lot of 1st gen.Camaros and next to none that appeared to be original Z's etc. Thought I would see more considering the number of cars there, but maybe this wasn't the show?? Or maybe I missed them??

General Discussion / Build sheet on gas tank
« on: September 29, 2007, 01:00:09 AM »
I have heard of some finding the build sheet on top of the gas tank on some Camaros. The tank on mine has never been off the car, and so I'm curious about finding it (the build sheet). Is there any way to determine if it is there short of removing the tank? If not, I won't worry about it, cause I'm not removing the tank just to check.

General Discussion / Hidden VIN under cowl panel
« on: September 10, 2007, 07:57:49 PM »
OK, I removed the cowl panel from my Camaro over the weekend to check out the Hidden VIN under it, and it took me 5 minutes to see it even though I was looking in the right place from the start. I finally saw it when looking at angle from the drivers side in front of the passenger wind shield washer nozzle. Even after cleaning it off, I could not make out the last digit, but all others were there and matched the windshield as expected. I was surprised to see how faint the stamping was. I suppose this is normal?

General Discussion / 69 Front coil spring tags
« on: August 01, 2007, 09:01:20 PM »
In looking at some "restored" cars on e Bay, I noticed the paper part ID tags on the bottom of the front coil springs, and it reminded me that when I did my front suspension in 1995, I found the original "EY" blue spring tags intact on my car, but only because they had been installed with the tag at the top up inisde the frame rails as opposed to at the bottom where they would be visible when installed. Had they been installed at the bottom, they would have been long gone. Ii was a pleasant surprise to find them, a genuine Kodak moment!
