Maintenance / Radiator Bugs
« on: June 27, 2013, 06:23:58 PM »
Anyone have any ideas for screening or something to keep bugs out of the radiator. Sort of like the screen they sell for the Tri Fives? Or will that work for Camaros?

Maintenance / Battery Hold down clamp bolt
« on: June 24, 2013, 07:01:26 PM »
What is the thread size for this bolt? Tried 1/4-20, and 5/16-18, 5/16-24. I think I also tried 1/4-28? Threads don't seem to match any of these?

Maintenance / Replacement Radiator
« on: June 04, 2013, 08:50:58 PM »
Looking to replace my radiator with good quality reproduction that looks like the factory original. Does not have to be exact. Lots of choices from Heartbeat City, Classic Camaro, Ricks, D&R, etc. Anyone have experience with these who can comment. Thank you.

General Discussion / Stamping Presses and set up
« on: April 29, 2013, 07:07:44 PM »
Question for John Z:

Were the press set ups for say running a quarter panel run with same setup and for the same part for an entire production year? Or were they changed occasionally to run different parts? I know some of these setups had as many as 6 presses to make one part. How long would a setup take? Had to have been quite a while.

I have seen the video of parts stamping for the new Camaro where the setup is changed for a different part in 5 minutes or so without a human involved. Amazing. I know where a lot of the automotive jobs have gone. To technology.

Maintenance / 302 DZ Valve adjustment
« on: April 08, 2013, 07:03:19 PM »
I have read John Z's article on cold valve adjustment for the 302 with the 30/30 cam. Want to try this, but I have Competition Cam roller tipped rockers. Not sure if these are true 1.5:1 ratio. If so, I should set the clearance at .030 if I understand correctly. what would happen if I set it to the .026 clearance with a true 1.5:1 ratio rocker? Would this cause excessive cam wear? Thanks.

General Discussion / 3782461 Head value
« on: January 07, 2013, 09:40:59 PM »
Not to high jack, but since you mentioned Vette heads, does head 3782461 have any value? Dated I 11 4. Think it's from a '64 Vette. Valve size 1.94.

Decoding/Numbers / Cyl Head 3947041
« on: January 03, 2013, 02:38:00 PM »
Looking at a head #3947041 with casting date of C21 9; Has 5/8" tapered seat plugs. Is this a 69 produced head for 1970 model year? I thought 69's have the 13/16" plugs with the washers. Or could it have been changed?

Decoding/Numbers / Rear Carrier Casting Date
« on: October 09, 2012, 02:46:56 PM »
Just took a pic of my rear carrier casting date. Looks to me like "I 24", but I do not see a year. It should be an "8". Is there an "8" there?

General Discussion / Original Drivetrains
« on: May 25, 2012, 01:24:33 PM »
I'm curious as to how many of the 67-69 Z/28's out there still have their original drive train, particularly the original engine. Just a general feel. Would it be half? Less than that? More?
As many cars as Jerry Mac has authenticated, I would think he would have a pretty good idea.

Maintenance / Replacing igniton switch
« on: February 23, 2011, 03:35:21 PM »
I need to replace the ignition switch on my Z. It is located on top of the steering column which means that I have to lower or remove the steering column to access it. Anyone done this I hope?
Can I just lower the column without completely removing it? And can I do this without disconnecting the flexible coupling to the worm steering shaft? I have the manual and have been reviewing the steps there. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / August 1969 Norwood Production
« on: January 13, 2011, 09:03:14 PM »
A few questions out of curiosity regarding August 1969 production at Norwood:

Was there a halt to car production for a model year change over? Like the first two weeks of August? Which would mean no cars would have a trim tag with 08A or 08B?

When production resumed, Model Year 1969 Camaros were being produced along with Model Year 1970 Firebirds?

Both models would have shared Fisher body numbers? ie Hypothetically Body #NOR105000 could be a Camaro while Body #NOR105001 could be a Firebird?

Maybe too much time on my hands?

General Discussion / Galen Glovier
« on: December 29, 2010, 03:24:30 PM »
I hear the name Galen Glovier as having "documented" a lot of Mopars. Is he to Mopars what Jerry Mac is to 67-69 Camaros?

General Discussion / John Z's assembly process report
« on: October 12, 2010, 03:15:25 PM »
I have a couple of questions regarding Chevrolet's "Body Bank" process used during the Camaro assembly:

Was the body bank's main function to schedule and release bodies to the assembly line so as to prevent overloading of certain stations on the line? So bodies in the bank were not held there for other than a short time so as to achieve this balance? Which would mean that even though VIN's did not necessarily come off the line in consecutive order, two consecutive VIN's were not very far apart from each other at the end of the line?

If there were six lines in the Body Bank, how many bodies could each line hold?

General Discussion / Trim Tag build dates versus VIN's
« on: July 12, 2010, 02:46:59 PM »
I know that there is a chart showing month ending VIN's which can be used to approximate the trim tag build week, 11A, 11B, etc. I was wondering if the data base the CRG has accumulated from actual cars has led to a further refining of what VIN's relate to what build week. I know that it is still an approximation, (since VIN's were not build in exact numerical sequence) but I would think that with enough data, the existing chart could be further refined to give much more accurate idea of which VIN's correlate to which build week?
