Originality / Correct Starter Motor
« on: January 03, 2006, 02:56:29 PM »
Anyone know the correct starter # for a 12D 68 Camaro 396/325 M20?  Think it is 1108418 but have been looking for a while now and can't seem find one (ANY) that are dated 67.  All seem to be very late 68 into the 70's.  Am I chasing a ghoast or what???
Thanks Chris!

Arno,
Do you have any pics of what the screws you are referring to look like?  Do you know if the originals had any type of markings and was this for the first type spoiler or second type spoiler?
Thanks Chris.

Mark/Kurt,
REALLY appreciate all the info and help on this, I will now go with PW/TN for the shock codes, already have OH on the rear springs, but EG on the front.  I see the YQ referenced twice for L35 RS/SS cars so I'm hoping I'm good with the EG as my car is just an SS - Less weight? Any input??

Also, does anyone have a pic of a original date coded shock they can post to show the way it was stamped so I can replicate it when my shocks come in and where can I get the correct size/font punches from???

Thanks Again, Chris.

DEFINATELY the VIN, I thought they all had it.  I've had numerous Camaros over the years, mostly second gen, and can attest that all second gens had them there.  Still have a 78 & 80, KNOW its there on those cars.

Paul,
In digging deeper into my books it looks like any combination of spring/shock "could" have come on any given car based on WEIGHT with the chosen options.  I'm sure there was some basic standard but we all know nothing was set in stone with these cars.  Do the tags look original?  If they do I wouldn't mess with them, otherwise you can get them at any of the vendors, try Kenny at www.SS396.com or Ricks www.firstgen.com
Mark, you did help, THANKS!!!
Chris.

First off Welcome, I'm pretty new here also but found this to be very addictive and informative, hope you do also.  I'm not sure about the part number, can't track that down right now but I do know the correct code for a 69 with power disc is US.  You did not mention if you had manual/power/disc/drum so I thought that might eliminate one.  Good luck!

Crossram,
I'm also trying to figure this out for my 68 but here's the info I have;
I think these are all Front, don't have any info where it has 67 listed for rear.
3192419 is listed as 67 Base/F41/L35/L48/L78/Z28 broadcast LG
3192420 is 67 Base/L48 broadcast LH and also Z28 broadcast PT
3192477 is 67-69 Base/F41/L35/L48/L78/Z28 broadcast PS but also PW for 69 only
I know, didn't answer your question, best I could do.  You should also see my post for spiral shocks.

Mark,
Just want to be sure that's correct, according to the Camaro restoration guide, page 114 states 477 is PS for 67-69 and PW for 69 only (that's were the confusion comes in) and 851 is UN for 68 only.  TN is listed as 3192832 for 68 4spd w/o F41 & 69 L34, L35, L72, L78, L89.  This is why I am having so much trouble locking this down, I can't find anything that states the applications clearly.  Just curious, where are you getting your info from?
Thanks, Chris.

I have a 12D 68 LOS car and it was gray/white, I read in one of my books it was gray white to early mid year production for 68 then changed over black/aqua.  To late right now to dig through my books but I'll look and post what book it's in.  I know you can't believe everything you read but I know what my car had.  GM also still sells the paint and it was a pretty good match, also dries pretty hard unlike the repop stuff.  Not water proof, but water resistant.

WOW, thought I'd get more responses here, at least I don't feel so stupid not knowing the difference between the SS and F41 suspension, thought someone would though.  ??? :o ;D

JohnKY, No paint on the seal, gromment, or heatercore, it's just dirt & the pictures-pic 3 is a better shot of the heater core.  As for the wire harness hook, I guess it just fell off, was missing when I got the car.  Spot on the firewall hardly even looked like it had something there so it must have been a real poor attempt by the spotwelder.

Mr396, yep, that's the hidden vin under the blower case.

Looks like so far I'm the only one with a LOS car, anyone else with a LOS car want to chime in???

Thanks for all the responses so far too!!!

Here's some pictures from the teardown, note----the black paint on the lower portions of the firewall where the inner fenders would meet, right above the the frame mounts is overspray from when they rattle-caned the inner fenders and not from the factory.  You can see it in the last pic on the brake lines also.  Also note the missing wire harness hanger to the right of the trim plate, not a hint of black, just rust...
