General Discussion / Re: What's it worth??
« on: November 16, 2022, 11:53:16 AM »
I'll add one more point - if you're going to create one, check the valve on the snorkel, making sure it will hold vacuum.  The one I used didn't, and caused me issues - wondering why my engine didn't run right.   I just stuffed a small piece of metal rod into the hose leading up to the vacuum pot underneath the air cleaner to block it off.  Car ran fine after that.

Edelbrock use to sell NEW Quadrajet carbs a few years back.  I have one that I use instead of my restored 7029202, and its perfect.  Just seal-off the bottom well plugs and you'll be good for a long time.  Check Summit / Jegs.....

Originality / Re: T3 Replacements?
« on: November 15, 2022, 03:44:57 PM »
I read / heard awhile back that Wagner was making these T3 headlamps for the vendor back then (who I can't remember), and decided to stop entirely from making vacuum headlamps like we need....equipment was old, process hazards, etc.  So the repro T3's dried up.  I guess The Parts Place found another vendor to make them again which is good for us!

For information's sake - those of us who have the Vigilite option have to be careful using these repro headlamps - the vacuum seal on the rear of the bulb is cut differently / smaller in diameter than original T3's - therefore limiting the light that gets transferred into the fiber optic cable that goes to the fender bezel.

I ran across two of these at Spring & Fall Carlisle.  $1200 each.  The sellers knew what the other had and didn't budge from that price. They probably still have them.
But they are very scarce.  So scarce, I made my own from a CHQ flat bottom repro and a GM snorkel.  Can't tell the difference.  Saved myself $950.

Maintenance / Re: Stock Exhaust Manifold Removal - 69 SS 350
« on: November 14, 2022, 12:01:24 PM »
I "trued up" the manifold surfaces with a large aluminum block for flatness and 320 grit sandpaper.  Goth them really nice and flat.  Reinstalled it yesterday (hell - I got this "down-pat") and it worked great - no leaks - perfect.

So - to end this thread on a positive note, the manifolds can be removed easily - the drivers side takes a little finagling - the passenger side is a breeze.

Never installed gaskets because GM never used them initially.  I could try that, but I'm just going to repaint / reinstall the one that I took off.  It's in good shape.

Performed the swap - no problems  ---  Until I started the car and heard exhaust popping from the passenger side - middle-two exhaust where the manifold meets the head.  Pulled it off again, and I didn't notice (total stupidity on my part) that the exhaust manifold surface where it meets the head was not totally flat - iow, had rust pits and it wouldn't seal up real nice.  :(

Now what!....LOL!

I would check your bellhousing alignment. Parallel and concentric. I stock all the shims and dial indicators to do so.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!

Restoration / Re: Has anybody redone/restored a pitman arm?
« on: October 29, 2022, 12:56:42 PM »
Unfortunately that component can’t be rebuilt.  Unfortunately getting another GM one is impossible to find.  You might get lucky on eBay, but get ready to pay big time.  I found one on there two years ago for $450. That’s the biggest puckering I’ve had ever experienced (well -next to the rear Vigilite indicator) I was a moron, but when you gotta have it, you have to have it.

Well - you can, but it'll be nerve-racking at the least.  Pulling the stud that holds the mirror to the base - that's one.  Heat around the stud with a heat gun, then carefully spray the stud with something cold, like the propellant from canned air.  A couple of hits, with a soft mallet, it MIGHT pop out.

The mirror - some of us had luck by placing the mirror upside down in a bath of MEK, or other nasty solvents to release the glass from the metal.

If all the above works - consider yourself lucky.

I stand corrected….I forgot about those firewall holes.

Shame on you Dave!!!  lol

Originality / Re: Air Cleaner spacer?
« on: October 13, 2022, 11:10:13 AM »
"I went to replace the cowl induction seal and the lip to secure it was pointed the wrong direction. So I grabbed the AIM and figured out the Camaro Central guys had it inside out. I flipped it around and also noticed in the diagram there is a spacer between the air cleaner base and the flat flange where the seal is mounted."

If I got a dime for every upside-down Cowl Induction seal I saw in the past 30 yrs, I'd be a millionaire.
