General Discussion / Re: 67 CAMARO 4 PISTON CALIPERS
« on: June 26, 2007, 02:59:20 AM »
Has anyone had any experience with the NEW 4 piston calipers some places are offering for the 67s and 68s? I am thinking of converting my 68 and I like the OE look.

TONS of Camaros down there. Coolest one I saw was a 69 crossram Z running around on the street. It looked like a nice "driver" with a little wear and tear and fuel stains on the intake. How cool!

As the word "investment" gets used more and more in the place of "hobby" or "project", I would have to say the first gens are quickly becoming out of reach to the working class. I am VERY lucky I got my project Camaro when I did.

As for the redneck cars, I do remember a period of time when most of the first gens you saw were dressed in gray primer with Cragars and air shocks, and there was likely a mullet inside somewhere.

General Discussion / Re: Found Camaros, Not For Sale...
« on: May 04, 2007, 03:29:29 AM »
Back in 97, while scouting for parts for my 68 327/PG coupe, I found a wrecked 69 RS on a farm just visible from the road. I stopped by the next day to ask if any parts would be for sale. The owner told me it was the car he bought new in 69 and then wrecked in 74 and it had been sitting in a building since. Only recently was it brought outside, along with the car under a cover that was sitting behind it- a all original cortez silver 1969 RS/SS 350, manual trans, factory A/C in great shape. He told me that if I helped him dismantle the wrecked RS I could have the parts I needed. He would keep the rest of the parts as spares for the RS/SS, which, despite the locked up engine, was not for sale. A few days later after loading my truck with a pile of parts from the wreck, I offered to help get the frozen engine in the silver SS running again, he accepted.
A few weeks later I returned to attempt to make the little 350 run again. Turns out, the rings were just lightly stuck in the bores from sitting for about 15 years. Some light levering on the flywheel with some ATF in the cylinders freed the engine up enough for the starter to rotate it. It fired up! The owner was so happy I thought he was going to sell it to me right then, but he didn't. He did promise me that if he ever did sell it, I would have first shot at it. We'll see!
Years went by, the cover eventually rotted off onto the ground. The cowl filled with leaves. The mid-70s repaint cracked up. I would talk to the guy on a regular basis and occasionally do some work on some of his other cars while the Camaro sat in the field with a couple junky old Chryslers and a rusted 68 Firebird, still not for sale. We became good friends over the years and he would allow me to come start the engine and clean the leaves and pine needels from the cowl area to try and slow the rust in case I ever bought it.
In November 03 I got a phone call. "Its time." he said. " I've had my turn with it. its time to pass it on to someone else" he said.
He was going to sell his 69 RS/SS and he kept his promise. After six months we agreed on a price we could live with and still be friends.(good thing I had refinanced my house that year). I often thought it would just rot to the ground like many other cars, but I guess I got lucky.

I'm thinking about going to Carlisle this month but I'm afraid I'll be disappointed again. So much junk, high prices.

I believe its going to be the 1310 flange. Should be part #3996118 with straps. I just went through the same thing with my 69 SS. I got lucky and found a NOS flange for a good price. It did not look exactly like my original (very close) but works perfect. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, My iron housing looks and works so good I almost overlooked it. Did the aluminum housings leak and/or rot pretty often? Possibly the reason mine was likely replaced in the 70s by the 2nd owner.

In 69, were the small block thermostat housings aluminum or cast iron? The one on my L48 is cast iron. It appears original but I'm not sure if its correct. Thanks.

Just folded down the seat in my 12B RS/SS and found a small X 1. There is no X code on my trim tag. Also, there is almost no red primer behind/under my seat or under the carpet. Mostly body color.

Anyone know of a good oil to use in a manual steering gear since the GM stuff is discontinued. Mine has been leaking for a while.

Thanks

I too would like to find the best possible replacement (stock type) pistons for my 350/300. I want to keep the weight the same and maintain the compression ratio.

I payed $2600 for coupe quarters last year. They were still in the boxes.

Maryland keeps all records until car leaves the state. I'm pretty sure they discard them once the car gets titled in another state.
I was able to get copies of all previous titles and even the certificate of origin for my 69, which led me to the original owner. I also have a friend in law enforcement who assisted me.
