Restoration / Re: Trunk Spatter Paint Color for 1st Gens.
« on: January 13, 2007, 02:30:46 PM »
Two vendors are making the correct truck spatter paint for first gen Camaros.  Larry Christensen at Camaros Plus in Arvada, CO and Brian Henderson at Supercar Workshop in LaTrobe, PA.  Both are the accepted standard in concours judging and pretty damn close to the original.  A professional pressure gun is needed to apply this paint.  If you are hoping to find the right stuff in a rattle can, forget it.

Yes, I know Roger well.  Does excellent work and was one of the first to start documenting factory front end paint markings.

Chuck,

He called me while I was away on a Camaro inspection trip this week.  I'll try to call him tomorrow and get details.

Sorry Bud,

I would have mentioned you but you own a big block car (ha) just kidding.  I got to work with Dan back in the mid 1990's when he shot cars that the ICC Camaro Nationals.  Remember?

I'm glad that all of you got to do the calendar experience.  Gary was upset because they removed the raised white letters from his tires in the photo.

The spray welding reskinning process that we do has produced the best original patina look for restoring these cars.  Also good for NCRS Corvette restorers.  We, along with other customers have seen the ceramic coatings and they just don't have the original cast look.  You would also be shot down in any concours "Legend" certification judging.  With our spray welding process, the manifolds will never rust again and will maintain the factory cast appearance.  The set on my red 1968 Z28 were done in 1987 and are still perfect, no rust spots at all.  I spent years researching the differnet processes before we invested in buying the equipment to do the job.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: BR Axle Code On A Z28

Doubt the plant would build one with a 3.07 and M21.  Would not be able to move the car.  Clutches would be worn out in a matter of months.  I have driven a Z28 w/ M21 and 3.55, would not get out of its own way.  If they were built, would have to be with an M20,

350 engine, 5K redline, 396-325hp engine, 5500K, 396-375hp, 6K redline.

There were tach shortages are the LA plant and many cars did not get the correct tach there.

No help on a drag car.  Have taken the front and rear off at different events and there was no difference in ET or mph.  This is an NHRA Stock Eliminator Z28 that runs 120-123 mph.

Once the distrubutor is set up with a short curve and light spring set on a Sun distrubutor machine, you're good to go.  Read the customer feedback on distributors on my website, www.z28camaro.com.

Sometimes you can get the same sound out of the 346 cam if you tighten the valves down to about .022".  What we've found in our dyno testing research is that you lose cylinder pressure when installing a higher lift camshaft such as the 140 so there are trade offs.  Bigger is not necessarily better all the time.  The 140 uses a lot of fuel on the street too.

All of the factory built 302's that were installed in Z28s received the "346" camshaft.  There were actually two upgrade versions, but they had to be purchsed over the counter.

Originality / Re: 1969 Z/28 springs

Exact original rear leaf springs are available from Rick's and other Camaro vendors.  About $380 a pair plus shipping.  We've installed them in many cars.

I think that Brent Roby or Brett Merriman would be good sources.  I know they have or had originals at one time or another.  Don't know if they visit this site or not.  I'll see if I have a phone number,

John,

Do you have a photo of the staming?  Would like to examine.  I can tell you if it's a real stamping or not.  The casting date seems too early for that assembly date.  John Z, any thoughts on the gap from May 22 '68 until Sept 13 '68?

Thanks and happy New Year,

Jerry
