General Discussion / Racing At The NHRA Dutch Classic
« on: October 29, 2008, 04:18:56 AM »
Just wanted to pass along to all on this forum who enjoy drag racingt that we had a good couple of weekends in debuting our new 1967 Z28 "Project Stocker."  Will post some new race photos on my website soon.  www.z28camaro.com.

On the first outing two weeks ago at the NHRA Virginia Nationals, the car ran a 10.79 on the very first pass.  That's one second under the D/Stock index of 11.80.  Also won class at this event too.

Last weekend we ran at the Pennsylvania NHRA Dutch Classic.  On this second outing the car ran two 10.64s at 124 mph.  We are within eight hundredths of the NHRA national record in D/Stock (10.56).  Our goal for next year is to set the NHRA national record in D/Stock.  Could not have asked for better results so soon and looks like our 2 1/2 years of building this car paid off!

Sam, thanks for keeping the car so clean in between rounds last weekend!

General Discussion / MECUM AUCTION
« on: May 17, 2008, 11:45:32 AM »
Troy, Rich, Ed, Kurt, Jon, Martin, Bill, Mark, and guys on the board here,

Today is the big day.  Word on the street is the blue ZL1 will sell in the 1-2 million range.  Have seen this car in person many times and it's ugly IMO.  But it's the highest optioned car and many with $$ would like to have the bragging rights to own it.

The Herbie's Hugger car is a real L89 car and I shot photos of the window sticker.  It's real!  The owner would be better off selling this car restored.  It's not even restored to it's 1970's racing state and that hurts any nostalgia race car.

I posted an e-mail to the CRG group last night regarding the front spoliers on 1968 models for Ed but have not seen it come through on my lap top this morning.

There was a 69 Z28 last night with a repro trim tag that got up to $80K and the guy did not sell it.  Must be a dealer who doesn't know he has a fake trim tag.  The whole engine bay was reproduction.

Many of the cars here are nicer than what I see at BJ.  The staff here treats you very well too.  I just hope they bring in ther serious players.

Thought I would post this here as it's Camaro related.  I just heard from Ray Fairall's old racing partner, Willie Hornberger.  I sent an e-mail to him and I am posting it here for all to read.  There is a thread on the Class Racer web site which is dedicated to most who are involved with NHRA class racing.  All on that site have been very supportive in my endeavors on selling Old Reliable and building my new Stock Eliminator race car, an original 1967 Z28 Camaro.

Enjoy,

Jerry

Jerry,

Hi, Don Lensch turned me on to your web site about "Own a piece Of History" article you did and the photos included.I'm overwelmed by your interest in Ray's car and the experiences Ray and I enjoyed racing this historic car.  I understand that you planned to race this car again this year and would like to know when. Even though I retired from Westinghouse/Northrop Grumman and now live in the Villages, Florida.  I want to be where ever you decide to race Ray's car again.  Would you keep me informed about your restoration progress and coming out race?

Thanks,

Bill (Willie) Hornberger
The Villages, FL

Willie,

Thanks so much for writing.  I am so glad that you did as maybe you can fill in some of the blanks on the history that Ray cannot remember.

The whole situation with selling Old Reliable is the right thing to do.  These famous race cars are at a premium and it's time to cash out.  I've had 14 great seasons with the Strickler car and now it's time to have a car that I can run under my own identity.  Ray's car is the perfect car for me.  It's the first 1967 Z28 that I ever got to see in person.  One of a handfull in the Baltimore area.  And the fact that Ray and I became friends all those many years ago.......you included, so what would be the coolest stocker in the world to build?  Has to be a 1967 Z28!  Only 602 built, and you guys created a local legacy in the area.  It's just a shame that it took so long to bring this car back to life.  Stock Eliminator is the best fit for this car too.  High winding small block 4-speed shifting at 8200 rpm.  What can be better?  No fiberglass, hood scoops, lexan windows, Dana rear ends, cut out wheel wells, and a full interior.  A factory built race car that runs in the tens with headers and 9" tires.  Does it get any better than this?  in my opinion, no is does not.  I fell in love with the Junior Stockers, Stockers and Z28s when I was 16 years old.  And in my eyes, they are still the coolest race cars on the planet........the factory built race cars.  My love affair for them still continues today and Stock Eliminator is the only class in all of motorsports that dictates a factory built car with no extensive modifications.

Ray's car will be a very competitive car in E and D Stock and it will also be a show piece to all Camaro lovers too.  To date, there were only two known Tahoe turquoise 67 Z28s built with white deluxe interior, and the other one has not been located yet.  Ray's car is the only one built this way that does exist, and it's a rally sport to boot.  I know this because I run the national registry on the 1967 Z28 and have been doing so now for 20 years.  Only 200 1967 Z28s are known to exist at this point in time.  The time is right and you will be the first to know when and where the car debuts.  It will look just as it did when it was delivered to A.D.  Anderson back in June of 1967.  How sweet it is.........

Thanks Willie and stay in touch!

All the best,

Jerry

General Discussion / Maryland Camaro Club Christmas Party
« on: December 09, 2007, 03:10:28 PM »
Just wanted to share this with the group.  Yesterday the Maryland Camaro club had our annual CHRISTMAS PARTY right outside of Baltimore.  I have been to a lot of Camaro events in the last 25 years or so and I have to say that this was one of the nicest dinner events that my wife and I ever attended.  Plenty of good food, awards, gag awards, photo displays and a great 25 minute slide and video show covering the club over the past 20 years.  About 75 people attended!

I know that many in our club hang out on the CRG site.  We are very fortunate to have such a great group of people.  I think that is why this club has stood the test of time.

I'm privilaged to be a part of this group.  For those who mssed this event, make sure you attend next year's CHRISTMAS PARTY.

Merry Christmas to everyone here on the CRG site.

General Discussion / Camaro 45rpm Record by The Cyrkle
« on: November 23, 2007, 02:32:02 PM »
For anyone who is interested, I now have an MP3-CD file on the 1967 song called Camaro recorded by The Cyrkle.  To my knowledge the Columbia masters have never been released to the public in CD form anywhere but thanks to a close friend who works at the XM radio studios in Wash DC, I now have a clean file that was made from an original mint condition 45 out of my personal record collection.  He ran it through some software and it now sounds like an original master tape.

If anyone is interested, I should be able to e-mail the file to you.

General Discussion / 1969 Starter Motor Numbers
« on: October 01, 2007, 03:30:49 PM »
I'm in the process of updating and writing the new 4th edition Camaro book.  I am running into a lot of conflicting information on the starter motors and what was used for some of the automatic and manual transmission combinations.  If anyone has info that can be confirmed, or an original car that can be checked, it would be deeply appreciated.

The 1969 Z28 uses the 1108367, which is used with a 153 tooth flywheel, the SS350 (L48 4-speed) uses the larger dia flywheel, 168 tooth count, 1108338 starter motor according to the Delco book and John Pirkle.  This Delco book also calls out the Powerglide trans using the same 168 tooth flywheel and this same 8338 starter motor too.  However, the GM parts book call out a 153 tooth flywheel for the Turbo 350 trans and Powerglide.  This has been a train wreck to figure out and I suspect that original cars would help this situation so I can have the data correctly written in my 4th edition book when it comes out later this fall.

If anyone can help, will be glad to give you credit in the book for your help.  I don't have the time to spend hours on end trying to break the code on this.

Another note regarding manual trans cars, according to the Delco book, the base 307 and 327 used starter motor 1108361.  What is not clear is whether or not the LM1 and 350-250hp engines used this same starter or the 1108367.  Both appclacations use the same size flywheel.

Any help here appreciated,

Jerry@CHP

One of my clients has decided to sell his real black 69 Z28.  It's driver quality with the orignal drive train.  He's looking in the $65K price range for anyone interested.

General Discussion / Camaro Nationals
« on: June 21, 2007, 12:14:10 PM »
Hope too see everyone at the Camaro Nationals this weekend.  This show promises to be the biggest and best ever.  If you want to see the nicest and correct Camaro restoratoins in the country, this is the place, case closed.  The best thing about this show is all the great people who attend every year.  Don't miss this one.

Ken Lucas from Lucas Restoratoins will be there with three cars that they restored in the "Legend Certification".  Brian Henderson from Supercar Workshop will also have some cars in the same class, and a very nice Hugger orange 69 COPO will be returning that was restored by Camaros Plus.

General Discussion / Camshaft Number
« on: June 05, 2007, 07:44:20 PM »
A few people had asked me about the 030-030 camshaft that we are using in the 302s that I buiid here at the shop.  I'm putting an engine together today and have the cam card.  Part # is 12-107-3, CS replacement for 3849346.

Hope this helps.  We have had great luck with Comp Cams.  Years ago, we have a couple of issues with the Crane version of the same cam.  Two wiped on us and that is a nightmare that no one wants to go through.  Probably a batch of bad cores.

Jason,

Send the photos to me via e-mail.  I think I did see them but send again just to make sure.  When you post here, just hit one of the new little blue boxes at the top of the page and start a new topic.  This way you don't insert one subject into another topic that is an on-going thread.

Decoding/Numbers / Another 1111266 Distributor
« on: April 28, 2007, 12:54:48 PM »
Just picked up one of the first prototype 1111266 distirbutors that came out of the Penske 67 Z28.  Has a date of 6M16.  Very interesting as the 1s are different.  Second one that I've seen like this.  It's the real deal.  My research indicates that the first 266s were built in December of 1966.

General Discussion / Camaro Hi-Performance Web Site Revamp
« on: April 16, 2007, 12:29:15 AM »
Just wanted to mention this to everyone on this site.  We are in the process of revamping our web site.  It's about time after eight years.  I have a very special story posted on there about a very special 1967 Z28.  Go to www.z28camaro.com and click on the left side of the home page on "Latest Z28 Project."  It's a great read with lots of great photos.  Also have gone over "The Company" section too.  Will be a work in progress for the next few weeks.  Will have lots of new photos and two new 4th edition books out shortly.

Enjoy,

General Discussion / Charlotte Swap Meet
« on: April 13, 2007, 09:40:57 PM »
Not much here.  Just lots of high prices and junk for sale.  I did find a nice 9204 booster and 9E rebuildable volt reg, but that's about it.  Saw three 472 intakes but they were expensive and needed extensive work...........how about $475 for one with broken NPT holes, cracks and cut out plenum.

Weather has been beautiful.
