General Discussion / Re: Order status "Echoes Of Norwood"
« on: June 17, 2013, 01:41:04 AM »
Thanks Mike.. Glad you like it.

Ron,

The event is called the Norwood Gathering and it is part of the Norwood all Plant employee reunion of both Salaried and Union represented employees that worked at Norwood full time.    The Gathering is an exhibition showcase of cars all buit at Norwood, and displayed in a stylized Concours d'Elegance format.

The display is inside the Norwood GM employee parking Garage that was built in 1969.  All cars are under cover for the event.  The All plant reunion of factory workers is held in the same location on the same day as the Gathering.

I posted links to the event in a reply on page 1 of this thread...please have a look.

I just selected the video producers that will be doing the official plant history documentary. Yes there will be an upcoming film documentary on the Norwood Plant and its history making operations.

In the tradition of film documentary work pioneered by the likes of Ken Burns- the finished film work will likely appear on either Speed, or the Discovery family of networks when complete.

Filming and interviews will begin at the reunion. I am thinking that if you need a display example for how a car was built then the display cars will provide ample backdrop for the stories of what it was like to build them.

The need for top quality cars is confirmed.  The producer is looking for the finest restored cars and significant original examples to use for discussion point examples.  If you have a car that you would like to enter at the Norwood built exhibition display drop me a PM.   ;D

Originality / Re: Lacquer Vs. Enamel for the Camaro

Oh yes.. the EPA was cracking down on the older plants over lacquer and plant emissions.  Orange peel was only one problem- the early WBP technology did not hold up well as a finish either.

HogDaddy... You should consider meeting the men who built your car.   We are actively looking for original paint cars for the 2013 Norwood Reunion in July.

Norwood started out with Turbo Bells and Hi-Solids enamel in 1982 which was modified to BC/CC.    When it came on line in late 1981 it was the best paint system in the industry.  The Norwood Facility was toured by Benz and Toyota and others - because of the paint shop.

Due to environmental restrictions in California- the LOS built cars were stuck with an inferior water based paint shop and system.

Any of these these ever appear or did they meet the crusher?

Yes.. here is a couple:

The first car was Gold/Gold and was assigned Vin#1 Fisher #DD01D The car was built on a trim tag already Batch assigned for fall production.  Built on FS+O 5-10, the car was promised for delivery to Chevrolet Chassis at Norwood on 5-21-66.  This car had a scheduled delivery date of 8-1-66 to the sales convention in Detroit.   This car's final destination was Kansas City Missouri.     It is the Bushmaster Race car.

The next example is a Convertible.   Fisher #DD29DD.    Red, 327 white top, black interior, Magnesium wheel covers.   This car was also built on a trim tag already batch assigned for fall production.  Built on FS+O 5-3, the car was promised for delivery to Chevrolet Chassis at Norwood on 6-04-66.  This car had a scheduled delivery date of 8-8-66 to a manager at Chevrolet Janesville.  This car's final destination was New Orleans Louisiana.

The Youtube video is kind of campy - but there is no doubt this is the car.  It's current option content matches its original build 100%

I see no info there, just advertising, if you want to discuss the cars we are all ears, but otherwise your not helping the hobby, and that's what its all about.

You continue to roll out the welcome carpet.  I really appreciate you letting me know how you feel.

I will not have to discuss it here.  Soon the information will be made public-then you can spend all the time you want analyzing the data (when someone who was there) gives you a complete copy.

Restoration / Re: are cowl and trim tags painted
« on: April 21, 2013, 06:00:55 PM »
Come on, its been 5 years now.  My contention about it not being possible came about because you said they just painted them in enamel, shut down the drying tunnels, and let the enamel painted cars go thru without regard to the other 912 cars being built on that day.  I don't beleive we ever got into a car being made and not painted a finish color at all, as the other cars have never been of interest to you.  By your own data you know the PC's arrived at the GM side spaced about 8 to 15 apart or more (don't forget they were making non Pace car convertibles at the same time  so some may be spaced 20, 30 or 50 apart from one another) , so you know there we regular cars interspaced between the PCs and they could not have been built in a 50 car group (ie one after the other) so the ovens gould not have been shutdown so some enamel painted cars could pass.  I had asked where GM could have painted 50 some odd cars in enamel, and was told that the mechanics of how it was done was not important, just that it was done.  I beleive that was when I got tossed from your site, I guess I sort of said the emporer had no cloths, and now all of sudden there is one car (maybe there are others) shipped in prime and that now applies to the PCs.  It's possible I suppose but there has never been a story of the PCs being shipped in prime and painted elsewhere so I would think tying one build to another is going to be a stretch.

It has been 5 years you are right about that.  I was getting bits and pieces at that time pertaining to the pace cars being in a line in plant and I  just like you was trying to apply the CRG assembly process to what I was hearing at NOR from the guys--boy that was tough.

Finally I quit trying to apply the assembly process and I just started listing to what I was being told from the guys who did the work and directed the work.

The Blue Prints for the plant cleared things up nicely too.

For those of you following along in the book page 135 is instructive to Mark and his ongoing confusion.

Fisher Body also had the Surge Bank where body release was spaced for paint and trim assembly operations where - the order of assembly on the Fisher Side was established after the unit was released from the body shop.

Convertibles were spaced along at this point for paint, hard and Soft Trim.

"Body shop could crank out Convertibles right in a row there was no roof to put on it was less work"   (That is a direct research quote)

BTW... Mark- you are out of free questions for today. ;D
