General Discussion / Re: When was the 1st 68 Camaro built and sold?
« on: March 23, 2019, 06:10:06 PM »
I owned '68 VIN 8N300200 for about twenty years.  The date code format on the trim tag was 08C.  The car was an NHRA Stock Eliminator competitor when I bought it and was still a race car when I sold it.

Several years ago, my neighbor owned what I believed to be an early LOS car.  The tag indicated 09C and the body number was 889.  My notes do not indicate the presence of the typical LOS scheduling code on the upper right part of the tag and the car is long gone at this point so there is no additional data available.

The Fisher Body number is 22,662 units later than my 10C X11 but the VIN is only approximately 900 later.  According to CRG, only 15,325 cars were produced that month.  That may or may not be significant but it's quite a spread.

Love that background.  Those palms are about a half-mile from my house and I pass by them every day.

General Discussion / Re: Category for 1st Gen. Drag Raced Camaros??
« on: January 06, 2016, 03:55:49 PM »
I refer to the historic Strickler, Jenkins, Wenzel, Beeler, Harrell, Gibb, etc.  How many 67, 68, 69 Z/28's and COPO's, etc. were dealer or individually campaigned for drag racing that are not known by all?  How many?  Who were they?  Are they ALL known?

For every one of the "historic" Camaros that can be identified, there are many thousands of examples that have been vigorously campaigned on drag strips across the country.  Many are enshrined in the popular literature but even more have competed in near-anonymity, simply for the love of the sport.  How many did you have in mind?

I have an original on my shelf as well.  We located a second one at a swap meet a few months ago and they look identical to the OP's picture.

I have notes relative to an 09C Van Nuys coupe with body # 889.  There was nothing else about the car that was remarkable.

350 short blocks are internally balanced.  Neither the damper nor the flex plate should have a counterweight.

General Discussion / Re: 1968 396 SS August Los Angeles Production?
« on: May 16, 2015, 09:26:47 PM »
How do other build dates under the hood stack up? e.g. engine build, intake casting date, radiator tag if still there etc.
CNorton, can you post here or pm me a pic of your tag?

I  sold the car about 15 years ago and no pictures of the engine compartment exist.  I believe that it was a base V8, manual shift car originally but I have no proof.  There was nothing stock in the drive train since it was a race car when I came into possession of it in 1979.  I raced it in Stock Eliminator from 1979 until 2001  It only had 14,000 on the odometer when I unhooked it.  The tick-roc tach was keeping perfect time until I removed the wiring harness.

Would it not be possible for a car to have an August-dated trim tag although the VIN was reported in September.  I owned a Norwood-built '68 with an original 08C trim tag and the VIN 300200.  CRG does not report a month-ending VIN for August, 1967 at either plant but Fisher had to be building bodies before Chevrolet Division could produce cars.

6-cylinder Camaros / Re: New 1967 find! Early VIN 7L100118 L6 3 speed
« on: April 28, 2015, 04:44:01 PM »
I can't comment on the interior trim.  My limited decoding skills suggest that the car was optioned with "exterior molding group?"  The only other thing I can infer is that the car had a red, standard interior.

With regard to the Fisher body number "70", I would suspect that the car could have been either day-one or day-two.  Hopefully, others will offer opinions but you should review the information on "LOS - Fisher Body body scheduling code" found on the CRG page.  "S" would have corresponded to a particular day of the month (late in the month, commensurate with week "D".  As I interpret the explanation, the second part of the code "067" suggests that your car was the 67th vehicle that was started down the Fisher body line on that day.  CRG explains that the Van Nuys Fisher plant was producing bodies for vehicles other than Camaro and the numbers referred to ALL bodies begun on that particular day so, it would be likely that your car was very early in the day, especially when compared to other Camaros.

I owned a Norwood '68 Camaro that was tagged O8C and the VIN was 000200.  There were fewer different styles on the Ohio line and the production numbers were higher as well so I suspect that the '68 was a day-one car as well.

What I'm curious about is with it being the 118th Camaro built in Van Nuys, would it have been a "day one" car with that low number?

Body number LOS   889 is sitting in my neighbor's driveway.  The trim tag designation is 09C.  The pad stamp on the block was VO915.  If it is possible to determine the date when the Fisher line began produce bodies, it should be able to extrapolate the possibilities of your car being "day one."  What date does the trim tag on LOS   118 indicate?  Approximately how many days passed between #118 and #889?

General Discussion / Re: Air Cleaner Stud '69 ?
« on: April 09, 2015, 07:31:19 PM »
That list of applications, with the exception of the 57-64 passenger car, suggests that this stud may have been specific to Holley carburetors.  I can't explain how the earlier cars fit the equation but the '67-'70 applications could definitely be connected to Holley.
