This one is correct then for 69 too? I've been reading no only the raised stamping is correct.

Was this ever used anytime in the 69 model year? I bought one new in 2000 for $15.00

Restoration / Re: body parts, am i over looking anything.. also...

In the mid 80's I didn't know squat when it came to welding and replacing car body panels and things like that. I met a guy about 20 minutes from me that is pretty much the go to body and paint man with a waiting list of 5 years or more on the DELMARVA peninsula that let me work for him for about 4 years and learned what I needed to do everything. His help taught me to do frame offs and frame on jobs and everything in between except paint. I don't mess with it anymore due to my own health issues, and boy is it hard work but it was fun to learn. With insurance being the way it is, most shops probably won't let you do your own work but you can always ask if there is a way to help.

Restoration / Re: Screen under cowl vent holes ???

Thanks for the tip on the Pontiac screen.

I am planning on babying the car for the most part. I am just being cautious.

The circled area in the picture below is where I was considering adding a screen. Something that would let water and air through and keep everythng else out.

Dave

Yeah, that screening would work perfect. Just cut to fit and leave just enough to tap down around the edge with a body hammer and tack it on. The squares are probably 1/4 square or a little larger, I don't think it would look too obnoxious. This is what came on 70's and later I think, it's plastic but 68 and 69's had metal you can trim up. The pic shows the size of the squares pretty accurate so you can decide.

You could always locate an A or B body Pontiac and get one of those wire mesh screens that are on them going across the top of the cowl and TIG or MIG it in a few spots to snug it up. I had several when I had my 69 Judge in my Pontiac days, so look for something from a GTO or Lemans. Should work well keeping leaves out. If you use a house window type screening you may end up getting clogged up and creating another problem up top. I'm with Hawk, where will you leave it parked when your NOT driving it and will you be driving it in bad weather where debris will get packed back in where you don't want it.

Try this:

http://www.micromark.com/jewelers-saw-blade-set-12-super-fine-12-ultra-fine,6750.html

Either the jeweler's saws in super fine or ultra fine or the razor saws would work very well for fine detail cutting. Since they are really for metals (I've used them on silver) they should last through more than a few grilles - pretty inexpensive, too.

Regards,
Steve

Have you used the ultra fine Steve? If it is a smaller gauge than the high E string, bottom string on a guitar, that may be the one I want to use. Thanks for the link, too. I've been looking for something like this for a few years and never saw them before. I knew they were out there somewhere.

Gary;
They make wire foam cutters that use a battery to heat the wire and cut have you thought about one of those?

Yeah Todd I did think of that method as well as the wire file/saw method. This will be something new for me so I'm still at the planning stage. I really want to NOT remove too much material that there will be such a huge gap that has to be filled afterwards. I already have a 3M two part bonding glue that kind of heats the plastic enough to bond together without damage to the plastic as it cools but I haven't tried it out yet. Baby steps. Getting the cut as fine as I can is my concern. How hot will the wire foam cutter get and how much control will I have to keep from melting the plastic too much versus just using a wire file and not creating any heat. Measure twice cut once.

You might try a jewelry store that does repairs. I think they use something like that.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot.

Was there a console with gauges? If so what oil line fitting set up is installed? Seems to be some speculation on what is actually correct.
It's a console with gauges.   I'll have to check out the bottom of the gauges Tuesday.  That will be my first chance to look and report back  :)
Hey Gary,  unfortunately the fitting was already removed. Bummer.  Exactly what should it look like for my future reference

Thanks

What fitting is installed on the back of the engine block Darrell?

Darrell, about a year ago plus a few months Lloyd, Edgemontvillage, started this post about the console oil line fitting to block. See link.

Look down to post #75. This is what is said to be correct now and not what is being shown at the start of Lloyds post. At this point I personally don't have a clue what is correct now.

Restoration / Wire files??
« on: September 03, 2014, 03:26:02 AM »
Hey guys, can anyone help me out with something?? I have several oem 69 silver grills that I can use as parts to restore and make a whole grill for a spare, in case I ever need one. I've been wanting to section out a few places from a good grill center with a broken surround as replacements for a grill that has a broken section or two with good surround and was thinking if I could find a wire file maybe the size of a guitar high E string I could file those sections I need to make the repairs. I've been looking off and on for a while and haven't found anything like this. Anybody ever seen something remotely like this? Seems to me the thinner the better to section out what I need.

Here's a pic I got years ago from JohnZ, I believe, that shows where the wires should be positioned on the distributor from the factory.

Danny...I did mine the same way your doing yours....with everything installed. Once I got the circumference measurement of the balancer I cut a piece of the firmest string I could find in my wife's sewing box, marked it and carefully taped it to the balancer. Used my hand dandy remote starter and clicked the engine around while I was under the car and made my marks on the balancer then. It worked for me. It may not be totally precise but I haven't had one problem adjusting the valves. When I do remove the engine I will do a more professional job or should I say accurate. Actually all I did was put a dot on the outside edge of the balancer large enough to see it when the engine rotated. Have you tried the timing tape? I did. The first time I cranked on it the tape disappeared. Never saw it again. I'm still chuckling about that one. As far as being painted or not I hardly believe there would be that much difference if there was paint on it. At least with the balancer marked in quarters you should be able to adjust it enough either way to adjust the valves.
