Decoding/Numbers / XCode LM1 Vert.
« on: January 23, 2010, 04:43:11 PM »
Found and Purchased a pretty cool little car, a fairly late LM1, with an X-Code.

Still has the #'s match LM1 "HQ" coded engine and Muncie 3 Speed Transmission.

12C tag and X44 Blue/Blue car.

Looks like an XGF/Wife took a baseball bat to it though......
Not too rusty for a Vert.

I've seen several certification reports that were displayed with cars for sale, and included areas that were "whited out" "

Jim, I know that as the values change freqently on these cars that many (including me) will regularly cover the "value" line on Jerry's report when selling a car, especially on Ebay to not affect bidding. I do however, when asked, provide a full copy to anyone that asks for one on a car I am selling.

As always, anyone who is buying a car with Jerry or anyone else's cert (Or as Hylton said GM Canada) should call that person and ask questions, PRIOR to purchase, IMO.

One of the things I personally like is being able to call and talk to Jerry when buying or selling a car, and get the "scoop". Let's face it, with paperwork that you can't trust these days, and NICB that most of us cannot get and verify, it's is a big help to be able to ask questions of someone who has seen a car independantly. It has helped me sell some cars, buy some cars and steer clear of some cars.

Also, one other point and a "Dirty Little Secret"- In many cases a car is restored with NOS parts, gets inspected, and then upon being sold restamped parts replace the NOS parts prior to sale. On a six figure car you should always have it reinspected IMO.

Nothing new about this guy. There are many threads on NastyZ28 about him. Every so often he changes his screen name on ebay. He is especially into faking the tach and gauge clusters (rescreening tachs etc) as well as the carb heat shields. A long time scam artist.

Be careful. Looks like this guy has several HiPo engines for sale. There was a guy in TN by the name of "Al" or "Big Al" that was making fake tags and stamps on engines, and doing a good job.
Not saying this IS the same guy, just be careful and make sure it is not.

Also like I posted on the TC site, in every instance I know of, the report comes a few weeks after Jerry has been out and inspected. He takes the pics, documentation and numbers back to his place and sends you the final report. In the five or six cars around here that Jerry has certified, I have not seen the report for a few weeks.

This FACT, along with the KW report being a bullet list checked off by I assume KW, seems to support Jerry's answer. Like most of the people here agree, I think some are trying to take the focus off of an obviously rebodied car, and place it at Jerrys feet.

I see this as an instance of Jerry once again trying to be accomidating(sp), and now getting burned for it.

Let's face it, I am nowhere near an expert, and even I can see that the pad is a restamp. Does anyone REALLY think that Jerry would have missed that?

That can only leave you with either one of two conclusions.

X3

Jerry's got a tough job.  He's walking a fine line trying to make a living but some of his customers don't really want to hear the truth.

I spent $800 just in fuel for the 1200 mile round trip.  Hotels, food and entry, more $$$$.  Was a costly weekend for CHP.

I'm sure you'll make it up when you come down south! I still need the smog setup for the L78 :)
It's always easy to look back and say "I should have", but I would encourage you to hang on to Old Reliable till the market corrects. Unless of course I hit the lotto next week.

Originality / Re: SS Non X Code Cars

Also, in the pre X code cars, there was the LM1 RPO, which can have all of the same signs of a small block ss (even down to the chrome air cleaner lid!), other than the hood springs, ss hood and 300 hp engine. The LM1 suffix codes were "H" codes as well, so make sure that you are careful.

Although, of course

I just bought some floor pans from Belair Bob, Bob shipped the same day, and packaged them well. Thumbs Up! I plan on using him again, also it helps that he is an active member at camaros.net, so I would imagine that he wants to keep his reputation intact.

Update,

Rich Pern at camaros.net gave the suggestion of low light and take digital with flash so I tried that and it did work.  I also have what appears to be a larger B or maybe even a larger 3 to the left of the x3 marking.  any idea what this is or am I just seeing things.  will try to post a couple of these pics so you may be able to see what I am talking about.

thanks, Bill.

Congrats Bill, just passing on what others taught me. One LM1 car I had, had a X1 Grn on the back bulkhead. It was a green interior car. Seems like the interior color, or first few letters was commonly on the rear bulkhead.
