Restoration / Re: Fuel Pump Restoration?
« on: May 06, 2015, 01:24:36 PM »
So, did anyone ever contact Fred about having a Camaro fuel pump rebuilt?

My old AC logo fuel pump weeps very slightly from the crimp upon start-up, but only after it sits for a while.  I bought a replacement style AC pump (no logo) to have on hand in case it needs replacement.  I also bought an older NOS AC logo pump, but don't want to put it on the car if it isn't compatible with current 10% ethanol gas around here.

I think I have decided to go with the AAW voltmeter.

If anyone has any input, please let me know.

Originality / Re: Temperature sender connector for pin type sender
« on: April 16, 2015, 01:03:19 PM »
My car still has the original connector, and it is almost clear plastic (although it has aged and certainly turned a little yellowish over the years).  Lectric Limited has a repair piece available, part number VRK6871TS.  IIRC, the LL plastic piece is a whitish/opaque color.  I can't remember or sure, as I bought the piece only to use the metal part of the connector.

Mild Modifications / Ammeter to Volt Meter Conversion - Console Gauges
« on: March 30, 2015, 09:02:29 PM »
I have the factory console gauges in my 68.  I would like to install a volt meter in place of the factory ammeter.  I see 2 different volt meters available; one made by American AutoWire for about $120, and one by Classic Headquarters for about $80.  The CHQ is supplied as the gauge only, while I think the AAW one comes with wiring & instructions.  Not positive about country of origin, but CHQ stuff is usually made overseas and I think I saw somewhere that the AAW gauge was made in the USA.  Obviously, I'd like to purchase the best quality gauge, regardless of price.

Does anyone have experience with either of these volt meters?

Thanks,
Jeff

Restoration / Re: Cadmium vs. Zinc Plating
« on: March 27, 2015, 01:44:22 PM »
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome back.  I appreciate it.

When I asked Dad if he wanted to drive the car again, he said "I already drove it 160,000 miles, I think I know what it's like."  Then, he thought about it a little more and got into the driver's seat.  We had made a joint decision to replace the shifter with an old US-made NOS Hurst unit I found, and he wanted to see what it was like.  The car wasn't running.  Left hand on the wheel, right hand on the shifter, he was able to snick it through a couple of gears and said "Wow, that's nice ... maybe I'll try driving it..."  Then he tried pressing the clutch pedal and said "now I remember that clutch ..." and that was that.

^^  Thank you.
Yes, he led a long life, and enjoyed 27 years of retirement!!  I consider myself very lucky.

Sebastien, this was a 4 plus year old thread and have not seen Jeff68 on lately...
My apologies to the CRG community for taking a little hiatus.  My father, who bought my Camaro new, recently passed away at age 86.  Luckily, he got to see the restoration completed, but I just needed to take a break from Camaro stuff for a while.

I think I'm ready to come back...

My Dad in the driver's seat, 45 years after buying the car:

It's a brand new battery - no charging or storage issues at all as tested with a multi-meter.

I'll give all the connections another once-over this winter.

I only noticed the issue after the installation of the solid state VR.  So, I figured that the way the solid state VR turns charging on& off is different than the old mechanical VR, possibly causing the vibrating ammeter needle.

84
No, it wasn't.  I'm wondering if there is something about the solid sate VR that isn't playing nice with the ammeter.

Right now my plan is to, in the spring:
1)  Try a NOS mechanical VR that I have (date code very close to my original).
2)  Try a solid state VR715 "as-is".

I would really prefer to stay with a solid state unit, so if 2) fixes the vibration then I will put those 'guts' into my existing VR and see what happens.  If the needle still vibrates with 2), then I'll install my NOS unit.  If the needle continues to vibrate, then I guess I will need to triple-check all my connections & grounds.

85
I converted my original non-working voltage regulator to solid state using a Wells VR715.  Refer to this thread:
http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=561.0;all

The VR seems to work as it should and the battery is charging properly.  However, I have noticed that the ammeter needle seems to vibrate - not a lot, but it's definitely moving back & forth around 1/8".  I checked all the connections, and everything seems to be good.

Any suggestions on what could be the culprit?

Restoration / Re: Installing Exhaust System
« on: December 03, 2013, 05:01:37 PM »
Joe-
I know this might be a little late, but...

When I installed my Gardner system, I only used hand tools, including a torque wrench.  No need for air tools.

If the original tail pipe hangers were attached with screws, that's what I would keep.  No need to install riv-nuts if the screws are holding.

The hangers in front of the muffler install using the 2 holes on each side where the small L-shaped brackets are now.  They are relatively tall hangers, and they drop down & pick up the pipes that go into the muffler.

I don't know your location, but I have a set of 4 new 'correct' reproduction bolts for the front hangers and a set of nice shape repro front hangers left over from my exhaust install - PM me if you're interested.

General Discussion / Re: Storing Tires

That is how mine is set up, but it almost seems the license lamp bracket causes it to catch the plate when tightening it and bends the top portion of the plate and frame
I noticed that on my 68 as well.  I added a few washers behind the plate and still had to put a slight bend in 2 places at the top of the plate for clearance.

General Discussion / Re: 67 Metal dashboard? 2 color reds?
« on: November 16, 2013, 01:38:12 PM »
I think what you are seeing is the difference between the 2 different paints used.  For the upper deck area, a paint with a suede additive was used to achieve zero gloss.  The lower area did not have the texture additive and was not zero gloss.

Maintenance / Re: Firestone vs. Goodyear Poly-glas tires
« on: November 15, 2013, 03:00:17 PM »
Jeff, Where would you set the alignment at on my car ?  Alot of guys suggesting   1/8 toe in.  What are your final thoughts on this issue??  Don
I would set it the same as my 68 with F70-14 Polyglas tires:  1/8" toe-in and 0 to .25 degrees negative camber, trying to keep camber on both sides as close as possible.
