General Discussion / Vintage Air or Classic Auto Air?
« on: May 22, 2006, 01:53:33 AM »
Up until recently, I was always under the impression I was gonna go with Vintage Air for my 69 Camaro Pro-Tour.  However, upon talking with some guys at a local car show, I was told that the company, Classic Auto Air, out of Tampa Florida, was a much better system.  I see that with Vintage Air, I may have to buy the adaptor bracket from Detroit Speed, so that the unit fits properly.  Has anyone used either of these systems?  What are the opinions of either of them?  What do I do with the firewall...smooth it myself or does the kit account for this?  Finally, what is the performance like for either of these units.  This car will be my daily driver and the AC needs to perform like a new car as I live in Florida and hate to sweat.  Any opinions on your experiences, both on the installation itself and the finished item, is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

Okay...so I'm playing 20 questions.  I am trying to figure out what the largest tire and rim combo for a 69 Camaro Pro tour.  I have stock wheel wells front and rear with 2" dropped spindles in the front.  I am wondering if I should stick with a 17" wheel or can I fit an 18" wheel?  What is the biggest I should go without looking ridiculous.  I just want a tough stance but not oversized.  Should I go larger in the rear or stay the same size all the way round?  What do you guys think?  If anyone has pics of their car with certain size wheels that you think look cool, can you possibly email them to me?

Thanks,

Steve

General Discussion / Recommended Rear End Ratio...
« on: May 17, 2006, 06:53:06 PM »
Okay, I am up in the air on a decision and looking for a consensus of what you guys think.  I have a 69 Camaro that is going to get a 502 Crate Motor, A Tremec tko 600 5 speed manual transmission and a Ford 9" Rear.  I am going with the Martz Rally and Road Race front subframe and a TCI 4 link setup in the back.  I have been given a choice of a rear end ratio.  Well, I have no clue at all what to tell them.  This car is going to be a daily driver and not raced.  I want something that leaves the line quickly bt will cruise nicely at 80-90mph down the highway.  I have been told anywhere from a 3:40 rear up to a 4:11.  I don't want too radical, but I don't want a dog either.  I am going to go with the majority of what you guys say.  So, you all get to help me build my car.  Tell me what you think and if so, why.

Thanks for the help.

Mild Modifications / Donor cars for a Tremec 5 speed tranny?
« on: May 17, 2006, 12:21:56 PM »
I would like to try and get a 5-speed from a donor car.  I hear all this info about WC and NWC tremec transmissions.  What does that mean.  Also, what donor cars should I look for to get a good 5 speed tremec manual transmission that will hold up with a 500hp motor?

Thanks.

I need the two spring bars for a 69 Camaro.  There is a 68 Nova in the junkyard.  Are these springs interchangeable?

I am looking at a new front subframe from Martz chassis for a 69 Camaro.  They are offering either standard height or dropped spindles.  What is the difference in handling and looks?  Is one better than the other and for what?

Also, is there a tire size limit on the dropped spindles?  Finally, what is the biggest wheel and tire that will fit under a 69 with standard wheel wells?

247
What, if any, other donor cars can I look for to get a rear end that will fit a 69 Camaro?  I don't care about the perches as I am going to cut them off anyway and install the rear with a 4 link setup.  I just want to make sure the width from wheel to wheel is okay to use.  Can I even go a little smaller and adjust it with offset rims.  This is for a pro-tour project with 17" or 18" rims.

I am completely rebuilding my 69 Camaro.  I want to get rid of the stock subframe and leaf spring setup and go with an aftermarket suspension with coilover shocks, rack & pinion steering, 4 link rear, new rear differential and 4 wheel disc.

There are a lot of choices.  Has anyone used any of these brands and what do you recommend or suggest or have had experience with as far as installation and overall performance, and finally price?

The car is going to get a 502 motor and either a 5 or 6 speed transmission.

Thanks guys,

Steve

General Discussion / What other subframes fit a first gen Camaro?
« on: April 30, 2006, 11:52:20 PM »
Okay, I know a Nova subframe will work as well as its brother the Ventura.  What other subframes will work on a first gen Camaro?  Anything late model?

I need the metal dash for a 69 Camaro.  I have located one for a Nova.  The glove box and ashtray look the same.  The gauges are different though.  Will the metal section of a Nova work for a 69 Camaro and fit the Camaro gauge bezel etc.?

General Discussion / X77 Rally Sport - is this possible?
« on: April 27, 2006, 07:38:02 PM »
Okay, I need my head examinined...really.  After a full sub-rame off restoration on my 5th owned First gen car (69 Indy Pace Car).  I swore I would never do it again.  Ahh...how time heals all wounds.  I have forgotten all of the horrible nightmares and only seem to recall how much fun it was.  How easy everything went together and how very little money and time it actually cost me.

I just bought a 69 Z/28 RS rolling chassis. It's an old pro street car, so I will have to remove the tubs and put back all the original sheetmetal back there.  The great news, it has NO rust.  NONE.  Very very solid body.  The trans tunnel is a little tore up, and the metal dash is missing (I will need one...anyone got one laying about?).

Now...on to my question.  This car is an X77 car, but it has all of the rally sport items.  Headlight buckets, RS taillights and backup lights.  I thought the X33 was the Z28 with the style trim package and the X77 was without the style trim.  But I thought the RS meant you got the style trim.  I am inclined to believe that the RS stuff may have been added.  So, is it possible for an X77 to be and RS as well?

General Discussion / Does anything seem wrong with this auction?
« on: April 25, 2006, 07:49:29 PM »
Check out ebay auction # 8059805500.  Several things concern me.  First, it's a three day auction.  Second, the seller has a 0 feedback rating.  Finally, if you look at the seller's history, you will see he has sold the same exact subframe setup three times.  Three different auctions all with the exact same pic and different high bidders.  My concern is maybe the guy is collecting money only.  He said he would accept paypal, so am I protected if I never get the item?

any opinions are greatly appreciated.

General Discussion / Plastic bezel repair service recommended
« on: April 24, 2006, 07:04:03 PM »
I was taking out my steering column and broke the corner off of my gauge cluster bezel.  Not just the little tab that hold the lower plastic piece, I mean the whole darn corner.  Is there anyone out there who does this type of repair?  Is it any good?  Is it expensive? Is it worth it or should I just buy a new replacement bezel?

Thanks,

Steve

If you have a 68 or 69, please send as well.  I already have May's cars picked out, but I need pics for the upcoming months.

General Discussion / Which tachometer is correct for the 69 SS350?
« on: April 08, 2006, 05:11:54 AM »
I am looking at Rick's catalog and under tachometers, it has the following.

It shows the 5,000 rpm redline tach was applicable to the 307, 327, 350 and the SS350 but when you look at the 5500 rpm redline tach it states it was for the SS350 and the 396/325-350 hp motors.

So, which one is correct for an SS350?
