Restoration / 1968 RS door reveal molding
« on: July 23, 2018, 12:07:27 AM »
I did a search couldn't find any info, so I'm asking. I'm putting my doors together(bare shells now) the car is a RS had reveal molding originally, had the doors re-skinned. I can find info on when the moldings are put on. I took a old scrap door apart and had to remove the glass to get to the center screws holding the reveal molding on. Does the molding go on before the glass. Thanks

Restoration / Hood hinges and springs
« on: April 30, 2009, 03:25:05 AM »
I purchased new hinges and springs from GM parts direct a couple years ago and specificly ordered SS springs. I've got the body back together with the new parts . After opening the hood fully it falls back down 3-4'' and I haven't installed the insulation or the louvers yet. The springs have 28 coils which i believe is correct for the SS hood. I don't think it's the norm, shouldn't the hood stay open fully? thanks Paul

Restoration / Wiring harness restoration ???
« on: September 04, 2008, 06:19:25 PM »
Are there companies that will restore original wiring harnesses? I suspect the answer is no. Which leads to the next ? What companies are the restorers using for the harnesses on the legend class cars? I'd like to be as technically correct as possible from a appearance stand point.  Thanks

« on: January 30, 2007, 09:22:54 AM »
I'm ready to install the brake booster and pedal assembly. my question, does the firewall/insulation pad get sandwiched between the brake pedal assembly and the firewall or does the pedal assembly mount directly against the firewall? thanks

Decoding/Numbers / Lower steering column bearing
« on: December 01, 2006, 05:24:10 AM »
Does anybody know the part# for the lower steering column bearing. Being that its Friday if I call the dealer I'll get its no longer available or I have to look in the old book, give me your number, I'll call you back.(just wait by the phone) If I have a part# they're much more receptive. Thanks

Originality / Inspection cover color
« on: October 29, 2006, 05:09:40 PM »
Could somebody tell me what the original color of the inspection/converter cover was on 68 turbo 400. The GM replacement is black, but that doesn't mean anything 38 years later. Some say it was originally black, others think engine orange, me I don't know.

P.S any guesses on the pan color? I'm thinking bare steel.

thanks

Originality / Turbo 400 and column shifter
« on: October 06, 2006, 06:21:40 AM »
I'm been thinking about this, thought I'd ask the masses. Was it possible to order a 1st generation Camaro with a turbo 400 and a column shifter. I've never seen one and have always been curious.

Originality / Where are the part #'s ???
« on: October 06, 2006, 06:15:17 AM »
Where are the part #'s listed for parts not shown in the AIM.  There are several assembly procedures and part #'s not shown? A example being the window fuzzies on a 68 RS(which I'm in search of). Quarter glass assemblies how did were they installed? What references did the factory use?
Thanks

Originality / Sealer between blower motor and housing ???
« on: September 25, 2006, 01:15:28 AM »
Does anybody know if GM used a sealer between heater blower motor and the firewall heater box? There's no indication that I've seen, but I thought I'd get a second opinion.

Originality / heater core assembly ???
« on: August 21, 2006, 04:52:16 AM »
Does anybody know what the substance that the heater core rests in to keep it from chafing against the heater box assembly is? Mine is hard, black, and brittle. I'd use caulk, but I'm not sure it has the suspension properties necessary to avoid the chafing. I've also considered the black tar ribbon used to install windshields. Any idea's????

Originality / 68 BB motor mount ???
« on: August 07, 2006, 07:58:49 PM »
Does anybody know when GM went to the motor mounts with the safety feature and eliminated the safety strap.  For a 68 Camaro GM lists #3990914  without the safety design. If you go to Napa their book call for #6021107 which crosses to GM #3962748 which has the safety design. I don't know which is correct. Any ideas???

Originality / Tic toc tach w/gauges
« on: August 06, 2006, 03:08:21 AM »
I saw a 69 Z at a local show today an noticed the car had a tach w/o gauges and no console. The owner added aftermarket oil/temp gauges. Could a 68 be ordered with the tic toc tach and the oil/temp gauges in the same cluster? My car has idiot lights and a bench seat so console gauges are not a option. If possible I'd add the gauges and tach by installing the tach gauge cluster combo. thanks

Originality / correct speedo gear
« on: July 07, 2006, 07:31:56 PM »
I'm changing the gear ratio from 3:08's to 3:73's and would like to change the speedo gear  to reflect the correct mph. Does any body have a chart that shows what color/tooth count coincides with what. The turbo 400 originally had yellow/41 tooth gear. The car is in the final stages of paint, then reassembly begins. I'd like to address this now and have the trans portion buttoned up. Thanks

Originality / starter soleniod wire protector ????
« on: June 27, 2006, 07:24:50 PM »
I'm putting the finishing touches on the motor and trans(396/325 turbo400)before setting it in the subframe. The ? is I have a 7" long curved tube with mounting tabs on each end that I believe the starter soleniod wires go through and mounts on the bell housing bolts, but I can't figure out how and I've been studying it awhile. The car was a basket case so I didn't disassemble it. Is anybody familiar with this part? I'd post a pic, but I know just enough about a computer to be dangerous. Thanks Paul
