Restoration / 68 remote outside mirror
« on: January 11, 2007, 05:08:46 AM »
Does anyone have experience with the OER repro mirror for 1968 ?

I had a devil of a time with the orig. GM interior mount....wrong shape on the remote head casting of the repro mirror. I fixed this with minor filing.

Now I notice the mirror panel itself seems too loose. This is a showstopper.

Correct on all counts. Wheeels were also color keyed to interior color.

My 70K mile big block Norwood March production had spring clamps for the heater hoses but tower for the rad hoses and water pump elbow.

I have a couple of original jacks. The makers varied, I have seen at least 4 variations of the same basic theme from 1967 to 1969. The jack post were always bright clear Cad (silvery) or Cad DiChromate (goldish) plated.

Restoration / Re: Lug wrench color & retaining straps - follow up

My lug nut wrench was black and I still have one strap about 6 inches long. I will have to dig it out to measure accurately.

Many thanks for the info. I saw a similar ad which got me going on this question.

Nuch, you have a good idea there on the see through valve covers. I am seriously thinking of replacing all of them but the machinist and mechanic (35 years of big block time) say to leave well enough alone. I think you are correct.

Originality / Redline tires

Does anyone have the original specs on the redlines shipped in 1968?

I'd like to know where the redline is on the sidewall, width of stripe, are thereFirestone script on the tire?  Seems to me that most of the repros on thge market have the redline too close to the wheel. My original photos show the redline almost near the midpoint of the sidewall/.

Thanks

The cam is close to stock. There is no bluing either.

A tip for new motors from post break research I did to try to figure this out, coat the rockers with a moly spray to prevent galling on run it.

The grille is a replacement based on the rivets in the photo.

Maintenance / broken rocker arm
« on: October 27, 2006, 04:44:38 AM »
When I started my L35 after a full rebuild it ran fine for 30 minutes with lots of oil pressure. Just as i kicked it down to slow idle after bedding in the cam, there was a loud noiseand one exhaust valve stopped opening. Upon investigation the rocker arm on #6 exhaust was broken in half. The fracture was clean and through the pivot hole.

I have seen this only once before on a SB where the pivot hole was punched out. The nature of the fracture looks like metal fatique.

I repalced the rocker arm and everything seems fine. Anyone have any experience with this?

I am at the end of the threads (just enough to adjust) with a new setup, only the Z bar is original and from my car.

All the parts seem to match BB needs, e.g.one peice threaded rod, V8 throwout bearing, correct fork, correct motor mounts and horns.

As the clutch wears I believe I need more threads on the rod, in other words the rod gets longer, correct?

Guys, I'm starting to go wonkers on this, we've checked out every component twice and all seems correct but i am at the end of the swivel rod with a new clutch, what can be wrong here?
