Restoration / Re: CORRECT UNDER BODY COLOR
« on: November 09, 2005, 05:25:28 AM »
William

You are correct but the question was the underside of the car. I've seen lots of unrestored Norwood cars and the underbody is 30 degree black applied way upstream, this was similar to the firewall spray but he latter was hand applied and usually was a bit on the grey side of black for some reason. John Z did a great list of the various finishes and the production processes in the plant for how and when paint was applied on TeamCamaro a year or so ago. Worth the serach and read.

Depending on where the car was built. My Norwwod is all 30 degree semigloss black. This applies to underbody. inside floors, etc.

Originality / Re: front spoiler
« on: November 07, 2005, 04:46:08 AM »
I posted a related question on the restoration page but this is a good dialog here. The question is for   early production spoliers ( mine was March 68) what type of fasteners were used? My ASM has no page for this option and I have none of the original fittings. I assume they were phillips screws with a captive washer or SEM indented hex with a captive washer size 10??

Restoration / 68 Spoiler to valance screws
« on: November 05, 2005, 02:17:27 AM »
What are the correct type of screws to use for factory correct finish on the 1968 optional front spoiler. The ASM I have does not include a page on D80 so I have no part number and no details as to head or lenght. Anyone have an old parts book with this detail?

Thanks

Restoration / rear bumper bracket
« on: November 05, 2005, 02:10:50 AM »
Can anyone tell me what the finish was from the factory on the center rear bumper bracket on 1968 Camaros, i.e. is it black like the others or chromed with the bumper? Repros are chromed but I think this was not so on factory parts. This is the bracket riveted to the  bumper.

Thanks

Restoration / ballast resistor wire

Does anyone have a source for the original ballast resistor wire in the engine harness. It is vinyl the cloth (white) covered and runs to the coil with the yellow wire.

Restoration / Re: 68 RS fenderwells

Hi Kevin

I'm looking at the AIM in the Z22 RPO pages and do not see any dimensions or "punch at dimple" notes. There is nothing like the firewall pictorial either.

If you can provide me with some reference measurements from your old set I would be very grateful. I think there are 3 major items I need location of ;
1. large hole for crank rod on rounded part of the fenderwell near front
2. 2 bolt holes for this cranks bracket
3. 2 bolt holes for the cross brace that secures the vac cannister

Thanks

Restoration / 68 RS fenderwells

Anyone out there have any measurements fro how to drill the GM NOS fenderwells to allow hideaway headlights. I bought these from GM in 1983, finally mounted them yesterday but, oopps, realize now that GM supplies them without the bracket holes, actuator hole, and actuator bracket holes. Ugh.

John

Can you describe the shimming?

Mine seems to have way too much material in the center bracket so i can't even get the holes in the rear side of the quarter panel (the ones with the little oval reinforcers) to line up. We are at least 1/4 to 1/2 inch off and need less not more. I can't imagine pushing the bumper into place, it is a channel profile after all.

I'm wondering if I should swap the new bracket with my old one. Or just rechrome my old one as you suggest.

Input?

Arno
Arno, My experience with the 69 Repops were the same as you describe. I had to do a bit of shimming for the bumper to have an even amount of space between bumper and tail panel. The front was another disappointment. I ended up taking it back and getting another that fit a bit better. Now after being on for two years the danged chrome is flaking on the front bumper >:( I saved my originals and will take them to Bumper Boyz and have them refurbished. Dutch....Check out bumper boyz on the Net bumperboyz.com They are in L.A. But do travel to car shows throughout the U.S. You also mail your bumpers to them if thats what you want.

The chrome on the Rick's and NPD stuff (I think it comes from dii) is not bad, better than say the repro hood scoops. It still has some marks that should have been polished out but these are 1 or 2 on the whole, still would have flunked GM QC.

The fit sucks totally on the rear. I have yet to try front.

Has anyone recently fitted the repro rear bumper that Rick's and NPD sell. I tried mine and the center bracket that comes pre-riveted to the bumper seems to be keeping the bumper too far off the tail panel to allow the 2 side brackets to bolt up.

Any experiences?

Thanks

Maintenance / Re: Oddball radiator fan shroud!
« on: October 27, 2005, 05:05:20 AM »
If it's a 23 inch rad it can have 2, 3 or 4 rows. Camaros were 3 row unless Hd cooling was ordered. Rick's has a repro fan shroud for 23inch rads that works great if you can get GM clips to attach it. The repro long clip is rubbish.
