Originality / Re: Trans tunnel cutting at factory
« on: December 26, 2005, 11:15:57 PM »
Would any members here have pictiral references for the 69 torched vs. cut shifter holes?  I for one would like to see how similar
they are from car to car.  Did the factory use a template for the torching operation?  Anyone know?

Check with Jim @ Heartbeatcity

I believe he makes these rivets as reproductions.

I have a few excellent used sets. Please contact me by email at wguinn@ptd.net or
Guinns-Engineering.com

Hi Wayne,

I have a fast question for you while we are on this topic.  I remember reading somewhere that the 69 vinyl top molding
was also used when two-tone paint was ordered.  But, the molding did not have the center recessed area painted.
Is that true?  Also, were all the moldings painted black in this recessed area, or were other paint colors used?

Originality / Re: front spoiler
« on: December 11, 2005, 06:32:52 AM »
Original '69 spoiler fasteners were:

Spoiler-to-lower valance - #9417075 screw (#10-24 x 3/4" with captured washer) and #10-24 nut with captured washer #3759924; two center screws were the standard car license bracket fasteners.

Brace-to-fender and subframe - #3847757 screw (5/16"-18 x 3/4" with indented hex head and captured washer) with plain nut and split lockwasher.

Brace-to-spoiler - #3847758 screw (5/16"-18 x 7/8" with indented hex head and captured washer) with plain nut and split lockwasher.

Many spoilers have been broken/torn off over the years and replaced with non-standard fasteners, but the above are what they were originally built with.

Hi John,

Could you possibly post some images of these screws & fasteners?  I'd like to see the markings and
mounting particulars if possible.  I believe you supplied me with an image of the screw for the center
support to sub-frame a few months ago.

Im curious how many ford advertisments are in that car and driver issue that trashed the 67 camaro compared to chevy advertisments.did you ever watch motorweek? boy they are so biased towards imports and trash domestic cars.they really favor the jap cars and their commercials are nissian commercials.just my 2 cents.

Interesting observation !

I'd love to spend a weekend in there just to document the casting numbers, dates, etc..  Just think of what could be learned about complete engines
components casting date ranges amongst other things.  A treasure-trove of research for anyone interested.

General Discussion / Re: Vinyl Top
« on: November 23, 2005, 11:06:34 PM »
Matt,

Here is my take on this ( BTW, I have an original vinyl top car ):

Vinyl tops were a late 1960's and early 1970's icon of sorts.  They were truly a sign of the times.  When I restored my car in the very early 1980's,
I purchased original GM quarter panels ( these came with the sail panels intact ).  So, we cut both of the original quarters off up to the seam between
the sail panels and the roof.  That effectively removed 85% of the rivets used to mount the vinyl top molding.  I could not bring myself to drill holes
in these beautiful GM quarter panels, so I ground off the remaining rivets on the roof and the vinyl top was no more.  So many Camaros suffered a
similar fate due to wheel well rot, lower rear window rot, etc..  How many of us got tired of seeing Camaros with rust in these places?  Replacing the
quarters was the only real option if you had the $$.

Since so many cars back in the day had vinyl tops, I just wanted a non-vinyl top car for a change.  I was certainly not alone in that sentiment.  Remember
the times back in the 80's & early 90's.  There were no Camaro forums, no eBay, no Camaro Nationals, damn few Camaro oriented suppliers ( anybody
remember Camaro Headquarters in Jenkentown, PA ? ), and no Jerry MacNeish or similar expert knowledge available.  So, few, if any could decode the trim
tags and say to you, "Hey, shouldn't that SS have a black vinyl top on it?"

Now, fade to the late 1990's and up to today.  We all know the state of the hobby now, so it is pointless to cover that.  Suffuce it to say that I have now
changed my mind on the vinyl top issue and I expect to drill those little holes in the quarters & roof so I can mount the vinyl top trim.  Besides, the vinyl
tops on the 69's were absolutely sexy with the trim being offset from the drip rails by 1.5 inches ( or so ) coupled with the body color being applied in this
area.  It's amazing how time changes our perspective - huh?  ::) ::)

Dave,

You mean like this one? (This is the basic style, yours may vary a bit...)

That's an aftermarket item. Popular in the 60's and 70's, although the seller in the ebay auction states 50's as well. Not sure about that. I had one on a 64 Rambler American I owned while in college during the late 70's. The idea was that the spring would keep people from breaking the mast off.

Ed,

For your information, the one you linked on eBay is for big block Camaro's only......  ::) ::) ::)
