General Discussion / Re: XCO build numbers
« on: August 20, 2006, 08:36:01 AM »
Thanks for the late reply.. but I only just saw it now!!
Bill Buckle eh? So, what's the conversion like? Does it look good? Handle well? Does it leave room for an engine??

I currently have 2 Chapple subframes in my yard and quite honestly, I think they look bloody horrible! They were considered the best back then, but I think they look like something out of a medi-evil torture chamber!
However, one may get put back into a restored early Australian delivery '69 as it is, and the other I am converting back to LHD. It's the only way I can save the poor thing!

I'm using the jig I made during the (re)conversion of my '69'

To be honest also, I haven't heard great things about the Bill Buckle ones either. Do you have any pics of yours?

Mild Modifications / Re: Power STeering Power Booster hose???
« on: August 20, 2006, 06:00:08 AM »
Power brake booster right?

The hose is a 3/8" I.D., and you'll need to install a fitting to your new manifold so you will still have power brakes.
This is easiest done with the manifold off the engine, but not impossible to do on the engine if you take precautions not to get aluminum down the ports.
Your local auto supply store should have the fittings in stock and your hardware, the correct thread taps and right size drill bits.

A floor shift auto without console?

Can you be more specific with your question please?

Maintenance / Re: Sending Unit / Fuel Gauge Reading Problem.
« on: August 20, 2006, 05:49:01 AM »
Did you check the ohms resistance of the sender before you installed it?
The ohms reading at empty should be 0-5 ohms, and full should be 90ohms.
I bench tested my repro sender before installing it at it would only go to 3/4 full also.
However, empty was in fact empty.
I had to modify the float stop on the sender to allow more travel to gain 90 ohms.
Typical repro stuff.

I thought spring spacers were illegal for street use.-
-At least here in Australia they are..

Oh well, it's not like an original 68 tag will ever tell you anything much about the car anyway.  :-\

General Discussion / Re: Fuel guage goes past full

I was under the impression though from BlackoutSteve's previous email that if there is a break in the wire between the gauge and the sending unit that the gauge would go past full to 3:00.

That is what I found when bench testing mine only last week. I wrote about it on HotRod's forum.

Granted, I didn't document the particular characteristis of the needle on the gauge going to 3 o'clock in that thread, but I did see it happen in front of my very eyes everytime I disconnected the sender wire from the gauge.
It used to happen to me in the car all the time and I was now learning why.
Cheers guys. ;)  Steve.

Hook up a guage and battery to it if you can. That's the best way to see if it works.

Empty should read about 5 ohms, half 45-50 ohms, and full about 90.

If you're willing to pay shipping from Australia, I know a guy.
See how you go locally first. ;)

Sound fair enough.. The "automated" registry just sounded like it was "unmanned", so it was my concern that maybe anything-goes as far as what information was submitted.  Thanks.

I guess I need to know the exact reasoning behind a database first, but..
How careful can we be with an automated database?
My fear would be people intruducing info to the database of their faked Camaros and then selling as them as the geniune article with this database as some sort of proof of their authenticity.
Is this a real concern?
-It's just something I immediately thought of that bothered me. :)

Would the database be for public viewing or more for the research of CRG?

I know this may be going too far.. but what are the correct style of screws that fasten these sill plates please. -some bonehead used plaster/drywall screws on mine.  ::)
Maybe you can suggest which head and thread type from the front of my AMK catalog.  ;D

Specifc pics of the correct screws if you have would definitely be appreciated.
Thanks.

The needle at 3 o'clock means the connection between sender and gauge is not good.
When the gauge has power without the resistance of the sender, the needle will head to the 3 o'clock position.
A poor connection could be at your gauge, your sender, you sender-to-tail-harness connector, or at the dash-to-rear-1/4-harness connector.
Make sure all these connections are good, if you still have a problem, I'd remove the gauge and/or the sender and check them.

Thanks Ed.. Interesting..
I guess I'll leave it off the car unless the rear wheels start locking up.. I'll fit one then and see what happens.  8)
