General Discussion / Re: Good '480' distributors??
« on: August 05, 2017, 11:08:13 AM »
I like the top cam on the shaft of the 9D2 unit looks consistent with distributors I've seen. The cam on the second doesn't look consistent. The 9D2 distributor doesn't confirm the 532 breaker cam? I like to see those pieces as that's what makes a Z28 dizzy perform otherwise you're just buying a correct case.

Just my opinion:
These are a safety item I wouldn't take it on. Not unless I wanted to buy some expensive tooling to properly install those types of rivets, you can't really call those rivets, it's an unset stem on a safety tab of some sort.
I understand the desire to do that as an NOS rag joint is $500 that's crazy?

You mean these rivets?
these are at very large 3/8" inch or so?
I would guess they used a large pneumatic squeeze for those and the rivet sets are probably made specific for those configuration. They have a large stem on the opposite side.

Got a pic of what it looks like? Rivets usually need expanded quickly to prevent the material form work hardening. So a rivet gun or a pneumatic rivet squeeze work best that is for aluminum and steel rivets.

OK I'll guess 35-40K I'd go more if it had those documents!

General Discussion / Re: Where to have master and calipers rebuilt?
« on: July 25, 2015, 02:16:04 PM »
Oops, misread your question. You are correct seems the bigger guys just re-sleeve them. I had ASL do mine years ago but they're long since out of business. I would think there would be lots of local autoshops that could handle a hone rebuild. Heck that's easy enough to do yourself. I sleeved my master as it had too much bore corrosion. The calipers I just honed and put a new kit in.

Danny;
 I had Steve Gregori at brakeboosters.com do mine he's local in Sanger Ca.
Excellent results.

I have an LA car 11/3/68 1969 Z28 what particularly is the question your asking on trunk paint? My car has mostly original paint except the bottom pan needed re-sprayed. I was able to match the paint with available rattle can paint available just about everywhere.

Maintenance / Re: Starting problems

Mike;
I too was hunting down a ghost wiring issue "no start after engine gets hot". I chased everything, grounds, resistance wires. Bottom line I changed the under-hood headlight harness and engine harness with the engine in. Had to snake it in a few places otherwise worked fine. Never could isolate the resistance issue. I imagine buried somewhere in the harness is a burnt wire that goes open or drastically increases resistance after running and hot. I know you might not want to hear this but if I had to do it again, I'd buy new harnesses and just replace them. No use burning a car to the ground for want of a good harness. Now I know yours is not that drastic however the electrical harnesses are 47 years old. I would also recommend if you can't find the issue and are on a budget remove the harnesses unwrap them and troubleshoot yourself.

Danny;
 Limited production Z28 wheel = $$
I have four AD's on my car couldn't afford an AD spare yet. So I have a YH rally in the trunk.
Getting tougher to find.

General Discussion / Re: CV fan clutch

Original used, rebuilt, NOS?
Probably a large range between. I would think a good original survivor $250 but tough to find one not leaking with thermo-switch operating properly/sloppy shaft wear
NOS anyones guess, or what they're willing to pay.
I have a nice dated original Schweitzer fan clutch that came in a box with the car matches my dates.
Those I have seen are ~$300

My engine builder recommended Joe Gibbs 10W30 with High Zinc Formulation @ 1200 ppm.
I'm running that with zero problems through cam break-in.

 No! Don't change out the base, original bases are non-existent!
If you want to have some new plates fine but that base is rarer than hens teeth!

Interesting distributor not functioning, got any pics of the springs and cam weights?
That's your original distributor right? Wonder if it is a bad breaker plate ground or something?
Pull that thing apart they are simple to rebuild.
