Restoration / Re: Roof rail weatherstrip channel installation ???
« on: November 27, 2018, 04:15:29 AM »
Dave;
Having just completed this after replacing my drivers window I would say its a little of both 1) doing the adjustment of your side windows and 2)tweaking the position of the roof rail channels part of the adjustment process. I also found I had to get the latex weatherstrip (found the foam types to stiff) and adjust the set up first without the glue (so I could go back and move the rail channel appropriately. Once everything passed the water test I final glued the weatherstrip. I did not use black butyl tape, what a mess to clean and no adjustability after install. I used the foam weatherstrip seal just like the factory. Sauron327 has posted some good suggestions before and even suggests pulling the door jam rubber stops and applying a ratchet strap around the body to set the seals.

Ok changed the jets to 70 Pass/72 Driver, 76 rear Pass/78 rear driver
35 squirter with high flow screw/blue accelerator cam, 18 degrees advance.
Car runs fantastic best tune yet

Hint of peen lugging, probably 16 degrees is it will pull it back a scosh to~16-17

Took it for another spin this morning definitely have to feather the clutch at takeoff, or it falls flat.
I'm at 12 degrees advance right now. I am going to try and bump that up to 14-15 to see if it goes away.
Getting close to a excellent tune.

Update to tune
pulled carb checked transfer slot perfectly square.
Threw in two new 6.5" power valves.
Carb back on recheck dwell timing: 30 degrees dwell 12 degrees BTDC
adjust idle trims for best afr
1) Idle results Left ~13.2-14.0 Right 13.5-14.2 AFR engine at operating temperature
2) Idle to 2500 RPM 12.5-13.5
3) cruise 2800-3500 RPM 12.2-12.6

Car is crisper on the takeoff with 6.5 power valve
will keep driving and report back on current tune.

Maintenance / Tuning a 4053 with AFR
« on: September 08, 2018, 06:23:29 PM »
OK don't want to take over Aron's post
So installed AFR gauges carb baseline is original 4053 restored by Eric at Vintage Musclecar
so jets 72/72 Front 76/76 rear
 PV 4.5 Front 4.5 rear

engine set at 12 degrees BTDC 30 degrees dwell angle
distributor original 1111480 set at (9 degrees) 18 at crank mechanical from 1200 to 2600, advance 7 inches mercury limited to 10 degrees stop.
Valve lash .028 cold stocked stamped "O" units Crower poly-lok's

Car ran ok hears first results after initial AFR install
So gauge installed results were kind of surprising:
1) Idle 900 RPM AFR ~13-14 so looks like I'm pretty close on the secondary opening was rich before adjustment
2) Idle to 2500 RPM 13.5-15 with lean spots on accel (probably needs a more aggressive cam on the accel pump)
3) cruise 2800-3500 RPM 11.2-12.3 jets are 72-76 so probably need to go to 70’s?

What elevation and DA conditions are you working in? 2497 Quartz Hill Ca it was 4408 on the density calculator this morn.

I’ll make sure its tuned before I touch anything carb related, then I’ll start with a power valve change. I need to flip the carb over and start with transition slot, I just guessed and opened the secondary stop a bit and its close. Oh and the idle trim screws now adjust at about 3/4 to 1 turn out.

Eric @ Vintage Musclecar rebuilt the carb and it looks and performs fantastic, just need to tune for my motor. Power valve is a 4.5 and probably needs changed too. Seems lean at throttle roll on at 15-16AFR.
I’ll post a separate thread after I give it a tune-up check: dist curve, timing, dwell. Then I’ll dive into carb tune.
I love the AFR such a good tool.

Oh forgot to mention DLG-1 $343.71 with shipping. Rebate $50 thru 10/31/18 = $293! I'll report back after install tune info.

Do you have a wideband afr gauge? I'm getting ready to mount mine. I opened my secondary slot up a bit via the secondary stop screw. Idle screws now seem effective at 900rpm and are 1/2L 3/4R and smells less rich. However my tailpipe gauge is not sensitive enough to get a good reading. So I'm installing DLG-1 innovative gauge and starting tune per this. Anyone tuned to this level?  https://www.innovatemotorsports.com/resources/carb_EFI_mileage.php

How much of the transfer slot is exposed on the primary throttle slots. You'll have to pull the carb to tell, if too much is exposed the idle speed screws are rendered useless right?

Originality / Re: 4 Sp Switch
« on: July 13, 2018, 06:28:35 PM »
The switch has two tabs that ride in the slots two adjust the switch on when the column is in the reverse position (as activated by the reverse lockout rod).
There should be two holes where the captive screws attach the switch to the column, these are just holes in the plastic guide.

Restoration / Door Glass Adjustment
« on: May 27, 2018, 05:39:14 PM »
Reworked all the door glass mechanisms, replaced rollers and brackets on the doors and window mechanism rollers in the back. During adjustments the fuzzies just wouldn’t make proper contact. Replaced with NOS pieces and they are 100%. Now with all glass adjusted correctly with good airtight fit (no wind noise) I still fail the final water leak test at the rear door to quarter to roof rail weatherstrip, it weeps and runs down the glass inside. Now to the questions adjust rear door glass up? It fits well now and the rear glass corners are in towards car as far as I dare go as window wouldn’t roll up with door shut. Door glass up will make the door difficult to shut needs a firm push if I go further up. So adjust them up and let it sit in the sun for a few days?
Or new latex roof rail weatherstrip? NOS is probably impossible

General Discussion / Re: Help in finding this car

If I remember correctly Y plates were Aug-Sept 68 so an early car yes but an X car would be August based on that a 19L502 series? it would be somewhere in there but again just a guess. Looks like Burbank? in the background? Navy maybe Montgomery Field? at an airport. All guesses!

I think the stamping on both looks good, I'm not a font expert but they look consistent.
There are a couple others on ebay now as well that look original.
