Maintenance / Re: 69 Dist, Vacuum advance
« on: November 26, 2011, 11:11:27 PM »
Mike;
My 302 did not like the vacuum can advertised 15 degrees at 8 in hg.
Here's my setup, 15 degrees at crank / 10 degrees distributor (20 crank) total 35 degrees mechanical.
Test driving with vacuum my car would only stand 9 degrees at high speed cruise and idle decently.
I accomplished the vac setting by making my own vac canister stop.
My car would did exhibit a good idle at 30 (15 advance + 15 vac can) it does ok with 24 degrees and no ping at high speed cruise.

My 302 pan is leak free using the felpro one piece, the paint doen't stick to well but I'll trade a little blue, for a leak free install.

General Discussion / Re: 1969 z28 dz 302 compression results low?

Gary;
 I used these for reference:http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=121095&highlight=Intake+Manifold+Gasket+Alignment+Tool
http://home.teleport.com/~cosa/vap/tech/inmanifold.htm
Best posts yet I've found on the subject. Following these provided a good installation with no oil leaks.
For machining the intake (which by the way after all this effort I'd true any original intake before I'd use it) I used the Supertuning Your Z28 Camaro book by John Olham.
Goes as follows; Table 5-2 Cylinder head .005", Side .006", Bottom .009". head .010", side .012", Bottom .017".
My machininst took about Side .012", Bottom .017" and that barely cleaned up the corrosion at the water crossovers, It left enough gap at the rails for a good seal.

Gary;
 My car had the same issue, intake vacuum leak at idle and sucking oil bottom of runner, had the machinist take some more off the intake runners and rails .
I used the Felpro 1256 intake gasket it was the correct size for my 472 intake runners. I also used the Intake Manifold Gasket Alignment Tool posted over at Camaros.net
and used only silicone at front and rear runners. Leak free and vacuum now is up to 8~9 in hg. at idle. That is with the rockers at .030" lash.
My idle is a lot better now I have it set at 1050 rpm. When it gets summer again I'll adjust it lower to see if it will hold a lower rpm. Plug check now shows no fouling and a good tune.

I guess I 'd ask the basic question, why are you performing a compression test? Having rebuilt my 302, I have never checked compression. I've been busy reading plugs and lashing for best tune vacuum.

The Camaro on the cover Joe Oldhams "Supertuning your Z-28 Camaro" appears to be that color.
Need to find a link.

Maintenance / Re: Replacement clutch

I have a Centerforce II in my 69 Z 3:73 and it hooks fine, no heavy pedal pressure.
I would use one again.

Gary;
 One other question what did you use for an engine cradle when you loaded your bellhousing.
All the ones I've looked at support the back at the bellhousing flange a few are oil pan rail supported.

Gary;
 Which clutch are you using?
I'm using the Centerforce II and Centerforce thowout bearing.
Very good quality stuff.

Maintenance / Re: Fuel / Octane Rating
« on: April 21, 2006, 03:51:43 AM »
Tuned my 302 per Johns instructions on 91 octane California gas.
As long as you don't get carried away on advance and curve that sucker,
it'll sing like only a 302 can. Warning it's actually fun to learn to tune them
just time consuming. The key is get the right tools and mapping the curve!
My car runs great no hesitation and no ping!
It's just plain old fun to drive it when its tuned right and pump gas works, mixing gas
and such is a Hassle.

William;
 Guess I'll need to send some pic's, but everything fits and functions correctly.
Non-interlock mount will fits tight on frame bracket.
No #5 spark plug issue. (non-ps car so ?)
and the balancer clears the sway bar with room to spare.
Weird
