General Discussion / Re: New Glass
« on: November 02, 2010, 10:27:50 PM »
Thanks Jeff for making the trip over and doing a top notch job putting the glass in. I certainly know who I'll call in the future for glass installation. Thanks again, RonM.

For added input, the pitman arm on my manual steering '68 (L30/M20) has 20 GMT 3935075A forged on it. Hope this helps, RonM.

The bulletin dated Jan. 2, 1968 had nothing to do with the ground strap for the high-beam indicator, only the ground wire connected to the bottom screw on the back of the cluster and the other end grounded to the pedal support in order to correct problems with the dash lights, fuel gauge or clock. The ground strap alone wasn't a good enough ground. Hope this helps, RonM.

The bulletin dealing with the ground wire is dated Jan. 2, 1968, so it's anyone's guess when it came into effect. As for the binder, I picked it up on Ebay 4 or 5 years ago. It's loaded with interesting reading (bulletins, monthly news letters, instructional booklets, spec. sheets, etc.). One I find real interesting has to do with the early 427 Corvettes. It looks like they were having problems with overheating (new body design I suppose), one of the steps to correct the problem was to cut out openings in the lower valance panel and touch up raw edges with body color. They even supplied the template as part of the technical bulletin. Can you imagine dropping off your Vette at the dealer and then picking it up at the end of the day with touched up openings in the lower valance. That must have been entertaining, RonM.

I'm putting the dash back together this weekend so right now I can look at everything you guys are talking about. My car is an 07D and it has both the cluster ground strap and the cluster ground wire. In addition I have a service bulletins binder for the '68 models and it shows the ground wire coming into effect on vehicles built after October '67. Hope this helps, RonM.

My '68' isn't together enough to test the circuit, but I looked at the wiring harness and the trunk light is wired together with the license plate light. I would say the trunk light could only come on when the headlight switch is on. Hope this helps, RonM.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: printed circuit dates
« on: September 01, 2009, 09:00:15 PM »
My car is an 07D build and everything points to it being an original gauge car. There are other dates to look for, one on the tach housing (Jun 14 1968) and the other on the housing under the circuit board (Jul 17 1968). Hope this helps, RonM.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Steering Column, coded as a component?
« on: July 15, 2009, 07:49:38 PM »
They are date coded because I saw the date when I had the column out. Somewhere along the outside of the column, but I don't remember where. Also my column has an orange tag with the letters CN, I think that's the broadcast code. It's located down by the firewall. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful with the location of the date code but I'm sure someone else will have that information. RonM

Research Topics & Reports / Re: Gas tank date codes

Just to add input, I looked at the tank I removed from my 07D '68'. Same location as the others and stamped 68  52. Hope this helps, RonM.
