General Discussion / Re: 68 NOS Fender stamping numbers
« on: April 02, 2023, 12:51:25 PM »
If you are talking about the date stamps located where the hood rests when closed my '68 has them on both fenders. Hope this helps, RonM.

Thanks for posting the link. One of these days I'll move into the 21st century and figure all this stuff out. RonM

There are pictures on my car on this site, if you want to see the oil tube in the 184 manifold. Look for the thread (New Glass) by jeff g. RonM

I couldn't remember the number so I took a peek under the air cleaner and the 184 is what I have. I asked this question years ago and mine isn't the only car with this intake on a late '68. The boss for the tube is there, all they had to do was drill it out to make it work. RonM

07D L30/M20- Has an intake manifold correct for a '69 L48 (the casting date is about a month earlier then the car). Flocked console and 4 piston calipers. RonM

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Engine Pad Stamps
« on: August 31, 2017, 11:39:56 PM »
I have no idea if that's a cause for 'double stamps', but JohnZ has stated previously that small blocks were stamped after the heads were installed...

I was thinking on the SB, that it was stamped with the heads on, and thats why some are a partial or stamped twice by the engine plant

Pretty sure you're correct. Most small block stamps I've ever seen are far enough down on the edge to clear the stamp holder from the front face of the head, sometimes almost running off the pad. Big blocks have a core plug on the left side of the head over the pad: no way to get a stamp there unless you pull the core plug, which would be extremely difficult. That's why the engine code is on the side under the plug (before the heads were assembled to the block), and the VIN on pad stamped cars is in the clear (assembly plant stamping) on the open side of the pad. Makes sense -

Regards,
Steve
The date code on my '68 L30/M20 (V07II) runs off of the engine pad. The engine code (EA) is stamped separately next to it. Jerry said it's the real McCoy, that's good enough for me. Hope this helps, RonM.

Hi Jeff, my '68 has the original XG's and GM center caps (68 derby caps) and trim rings. I checked the fronts and when you spin the wheels the caps do seem to bow out very slightly. I never noticed it before and you certainly can't see it when the car is on the ground. I think it's just the way the caps mount to the wheel. Hope this helps, RonM.

Restoration / Re: 68 camaro grill NOS

I think it depends on where it was made. I have two GM '68 standard grills, one from Canada with the number and one out of the box without the number. Same part number for both. Hope this helps, RonM.

Restoration / Re: 1967 SS 350 Air Cleaner
« on: February 24, 2013, 08:07:46 PM »
I looked at the original air cleaner on my car ('68 L30/M20) and the air cleaner has an indentation for the coil. It wouldn't clear otherwise. Same with the two in the basement, with the larger air cleaner having a much larger indentation. Do the repro. air cleaners have it, if not that's your problem. RonM

To add, the lid outside diameters are about 16 7/8 in. and 15 1/2 in. RonM

I don't know how much this is going to help you, but here goes. Recently I've been going through parts in my basement to sell, some of which I haven't seen since the 70's. Anyway I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) except for the chrome lid the L48 and the L30 air cleaners are the same. I found two L30 air cleaners a '67 I believe and a '68 both for a manual transmission. The '67 base measures 16 5/8 in. outside and 16 1/8 in. inside diameter. The '68 base measures 15 1/4 in. outside and 14 3/4 inside diameter. Hope this helps, RonM.

Maintenance / Re: Octane boost
« on: July 04, 2012, 08:03:27 PM »
Back in the 70's during my racing years I asked Fred Egloff from (Fred's Trick Carbs) what he thought of octane booster. He said it had a bad habit of swelling the gaskets in the carbs. If you know Fred you would pretty much take his word for it, I know I never asked about octane booster again. Hope this helps, RonM.
